@Tkoutlosh

The biggest advantage of sword in selfdefense situation is ability to block incoming blow and then you can start trying to incapacitate the attacker, while with throwing knife or gun you have to disable an attacker before he reach you and hit you which can be quite challenging and uncertain in its result. But in case of ranged attack it is obvious what is better which doesn't mean you can't shorten the distance to cut in time but you can be already injured in moment when you will be delivering your hit.

Even in a place like Texas, where there were no problems and few restrictions on firearms, Bowie-type knives were in use, I mean exactly as a weapon! Duels were fought on them! They were beaten in bars where it was forbidden to carry firearms! They were taken with them by soldiers of the army of the South instead of sabers! Moreover, there are special bowie knife fighting techniques and throwing championships of this type of knives are held. Moreover, their wearing was banned in the state of Texas, as I know! Even in a place like Texas, knives are relevant, moreover, it is in a place where there are a lot of firearms, for some reason, the national American cold steel was born! just think about it!

Gun for long range, sword for short. Knife is a great backup weapon for both. Cut and stab in close or throw at distance. If its just plain combat gun obviously but blades are definitely better for stealthy take-downs. Personal preference is the knife or lately the throwing cross. Great vid, lookin forward to another like this.

For me the Firearm is better for longer range, then the Throwing knives complement the Firearm when there are no bullets/magazines left. Then the Katana complements both the Gun and knife in Medium to Close Quarters, when there are no magazines and knives left or when an enemy is in medium to close quarters

The first throw you made Adam was spot on and deadly penetration. I forget how heavy the blades you use are. I'm more on bo shuriken weights with mybknoves and with a side draw from the hip instead of overhand throw you could cut that time in half and make it a split second.
@Pairex_Rience
@Pairex_Rience Жыл бұрын
I think when it comes to fast draw, the more reliable technique is underhand-throw because you don't need to raise your arm all the way up and straight up throw the knife at the target like some other knife thrower i watched lately.
@AdamCeladin

Underhand throw could be good and fast BUT its not so consitent like overhand throw i seen in fast draw competition people with technioque are faster but often loose since they dont stick the knife in to the target

It is funny scene, but there are few flaws. First of all, if there will be no show off before sword attack, within that short distance, sword wielder could be fast enough to cut Indy (21ft rule). And even if it will happen just like it was shown I don't belive the crowd would let Indy just walk away because the way he won won't be considered righteous.
@Tkoutlosh

So the scene is used as illustration of how it would work bit too often and sometimes it is just wrong.
@lancedevooght5027

I've trained in knife, sword and pistol. I've practiced the 21 ft scenario with knife and pistol many times. It takes far less time to gain proficiency with a pistol than the blades. With equal training time the pistolaro will always win. Most self defence scenarios do not require lightning fast quick draw.
@Tkoutlosh
@Tkoutlosh Жыл бұрын
@@lancedevooght5027 In very short distances the pistol fight have many similarities to bladed one. You have to be able to manage the distance, you need to outmaneuver the attacker or use the gun or your hands to protect from first attack and repel the attacker and then shoot him which is very difficult and majority of gun ppl do not train it at all or just very occasionally.

Cool vid! thanks! This topic has always fascinated me, and I'm happy some people got together to give a live comparison. I was a wannabe ninja as a teen and trained martial arts in my backyard with siblings and neighbors. Of course, katanas were the best! My passion was mostly informed by what I knew I was legally allowed to own, handle, and use for self-defense as a minor (swords/knives). This channel made me revisit throwing weapons after nearly 15 years, and showed me the no-spin technique I now practice almost daily. I spent a few years in the Army to learn some new skills and stress-test my training, and learned firearms there too. Really happy to have creators putting it all together and showcasing the pros and cons of each in a collaborative rather then self-righteous way. Master Jakub nailed it when he said there is a shared spirituality and calmness required for each. Thanks for advancing the martial arts!

Most law enforcement gun fights are ended with half the rounds in the gun being extended. This is true whether the officer is carrying a 6 shot revolver or a 15 round semi-auto. Civilians that carry concealed and choose to get training tend to be better marksman then most law enforcement. Civilian gun fights are over so quick that getting to a second mag almost never happens so I'm not in the least worried about running out of ammo in a fight.

@@davidsapir3764 the 3x3 rule 3 shots, at 3 yards, in 3 seconds was based on law enforcement shootings when they were carrying revolvers, on average they shot half of their ammo, when they moved to higher capacity semiautomatic pistols the average shooting increased but was still about half of the pistols capacity. I'm using law enforcement as an example because very little data is collected on civilian shootings compared law enforcement. Also check out the KZfaq channel Active Self Protection. Thousands of videos of civilian self defense shootings and law enforcement shootings that back what I'm saying.

Sorry to see your injured fingure Adam! I'm sure you would've thrown a lot faster if the injury wasn't there. All the best with the recovery. Excellent test indeed. The gun proved to be the fastest but as Pavel mentioned guns are also more prone to malfunctioning. Another thing that I'd like to add is that generally the legal responsibility of guns is a lot higher compared to knives and swords. In many countries you could be jailed if you use a gun against someone who doesn't. Even against an armed attacker! So from the legal point of view, there's another disadvantage to guns which has to be remembered.

While the firearm is the most deadly at just about any range, if the user is trained on it, the fact that knives and swords don’t have malfunctions is something to keep in mind. The gun man, must train for every eventuality, including his weapon, not functioning in time. he must be prepared to defend himself in another way.

Great video reminded me of a related historical fact. Chinese Ming Dynasty General Qi Jiguang (1528-1588) "This was the first time I knew this when a Japanese samurai attacked China. They moved like a dance, and the forward rushing force seemed to flash light, and our Ming soldiers were just distracted. The Japanese are very active and move about 3m at a time.Since the length of katana is 1.6m, it will be attacked even at a distance of 4.8m. It is difficult to approach with my soldier's sword, it is too late with a spear, and if I encounter it, everyone will be cut off and killed. This is because their weapons are sharp and they are free to use powerful and heavy swords that can be swung with both hands. " "For the Japanese, a fowling gun from a distance is effective. But the Japanese have absolutely no fear and charge at point blank range where they can attack or stab. It also takes time while our gunners load their bullets, That's why I often allow them to approach. We cannot stop their momentum. Japanese swordsmanship is light and long, Our gunners move too slowly after allowing them to approach. Our swords are not effective weapons for throwing away guns and responding immediately. Therefore, we should equip ourselves with Japanese-style long swords." Thomas Cowen” At some of the forts men fought at close quarters, bayonet to bayonet, and it was once again shown that, though the Russians have the advantage of size and weight, they are no match for the quicker and more skilful Japanese”

Adam don't need a gun. He is by himself really close to a professional gunman without any gun, in terms of practical fighting effectiveness. Just with a couple of screwdrivers and with a cheap kitchen knife, Adam is becoming a One Man Army! Master Jakub is also has a lot of fighting potential in practical defense against potentially deadly criminal attacks. Melee weapons aren't obsolete. In a close distance, there is no difference between a bullet and blade in terms of ability to cause massive arterial bleeding and blood pressure loss. And despite being unable to conceal a sword, Jakub can easily conceal a large tanto dagger. I even I was able to EDC carry a Cold Steel Recon Tanto dagger and it was completely concealed.

I have survived being stabbed twice & shot once on separate occasions. The thing is i would recommend carrying all 3 IF one can. At least a pistol & a decent sized knife. However something no one seems to pay attention to is that yes the gunman may shoot the guy w/ the knife or vice versa & still get hit themselves. The double hit is a thing. In my case for instance, i did manage to get my opponent & walk away but he still stabbed me even after i got him.

That typical engagement range of 3 meters is within the kill zone for anyone with a firearm. Meaning if you've got a gun and your opponent has ANYTHING in their hands that can be used lethally, 3 meters is well within the range that they can kill you. Gun or not. It's why in firearm self defense lessons they say to maintain at least 30 feet because even at 30 feet it will still take just a second for someone with a broken bottle to disembowel you. I would also recommend all 3 as an ideal carry. Personally my choice would be a .45 ACP for stopping power and lethality, then a typical hawk & knife combo so I could still grapple, chop/slash, and throw if I need to.

One halloween (coincidence) I won a quick draw with a katana from my knees against my best friend with an airsoft gun in hand on his lap. I hit the gun in his hand before he could fire. Just an anecdote, but it can be done.

Adam, you should try an under hand throw instead of the over hand and see if it is faster. The problem with the over hand is it's taking to much time to get into position where as the under hand is a quick jolt.

wow....All are and could be detrimental weapons for sure. Fire arm I suppose would be the first choice. I never really thought of it this way. Throwing for fun and pleasure, but now for possible protection....??? Quite a concept. Back in the day, my goodness, can you imagine this, to stay alive...you had to have some means to protect you and your family.

The throwing shuriken is quicker if done underhand in the scenario. Overhand throws are for stealth in my opinion. Also using them after evasive rolls work well. I believe underhanded can be just as fast or faster, depending on how your gear is set up. Plus you don't have to line up your sight like with a pistol. Throwing is instinctive/reactive like with a bow 🏹. Engagements don't usually end up like how you filmed. None the less it was informative. 👍🆘

The primary consideration is hit placement on an adrenalized or drugged opponent, there are many cases of people surviving multiple stab and bullet wounds long enough to do damage. Cutting off heads or arms lessens this problem, but carrying swords in modern life has problems of its own.

Great video I must say. What still makes me curious is how much would Master Jakub's results differ if he used wakizashi instead of a katana. Because katana is great but it's length makes it a bit longer to draw. Also it's length makes it challenging to draw and cut in a single motion which wakizashi should be suited much better. I've red many times that katana is designed to be drawn and cut with in a single motion but it's true rather for wakizashi. Would it make the result any significantly different?
