As a Firearms Instructor, I totally agree that Timothy Dalton performed the gunbarrel scene with more technical perfection than other actors. Dalton studied deeply the Ian Fleming books. Fleming was trained in firearms personally by Captain W. E. Fairbairn during WW2. Dalton cared to train the instinctive shooting technique exactly how was taught by Fairbairn.

The original Bob Simmons bit is great because it's played as an actual moment in real life, a secret agent pretending not to notice an assailant and then turning to shoot them. Every sequence since, except Casino Royal, is played self consciously as a showcase for the lead actor, seeming to exist in their own little world. For that reason I would put Dr No at number one but I do agree that Dalton probably acts the sequence the best of all of them.

For me, Brosnan has the best draw and fire stance, and Goldeneye has the the most recognisable sound. Craig, however, has the most direct, to the point and brutal title sequence tie in for Casino Royale. Great content.

much better than Daltons by a mile, his is too slow and telegraphed and the background is piss yellow. By contrast Brosnan's is fast, snappy and the sound of the gun is like a brick through a plate glass window plus that music is literal perfection with that bass.

I had a tiny amount of input into the Die Another Day gunbarrel sequence.I wrote to David Arnold and asked him to use the traditional opening notes of the bond theme because the previous 2 Pirece Brosnan films opened more quietly and the impact was reduced. To be fair to him he answered me and said just for you I'll do it , i wasn't expecting it but he did it the traditional way . The CGI bullet wasn't my fault thou !

I like how CR's Gunbarrel feels more connected to the movie, if that makes sense, rather than just opening in a separate take, it fits in perfectly with Bond's first kill and kicking off his 00 status in style, and of course, the texture and the blood followed by the awesome Cornell song elevates the excitement. Nonetheless, I agree with LTK on top, being the most badass and dramatic Gunbarrel, foreshadowing the dark intensity throughout the movie. Though I'd say Brosnan, for me, has the best pose of them all. Great list.

I don't think you are giving the OHMSS gunbarrel enough credit. I think his distinct saunter into a smooth shooting motion might have been a byproduct of his modeling career. The wiping him away during the transition to the opening scene is a nice touch. I do think the music is very much a product of its time which is why I won't give it the highest marks but it definitely makes my top 10.

Another great list. My biggest problem with the Moore gun barrels is that he is a lousy shot. Especially #10. His hand moves up and over (rather than straight and out). The gun drifts to the right, he shoots wide, missing the target completely, then moves his hands back to center pose. His other turns are slightly better, but the gun never fires. Just the sound effect. And I agree, Dalton’s is easily the best and he actually hits the target.

The release dates are slower than I want, but I guess that makes the anticipation for a new one all the better when I see you've released a new video! I always had this idea that the more rugged, tough Bonds (Connery, Dalton, Craig) deserved that distinctive guitar motif, while the more romantic, tongue-in-cheek Bonds (Lazenby, Moore, Brosnan) deserved more of the string ostinato sound. Of course, Brosnan _had_ the guitar in Die Another Day, but I feel like it didn't match him. Another brilliant list! ⚪⚪⚪⚪

Very cool video, thanks for sharing. Regardless of how our opinions might differ on the gunbarrel sequences, I especially appreciate the fact your video provides a platform for discussing the subject. I agree that Dalton's physical acting in the gunbarrel is fantastic, and practically impeccable. In terms of looks, the Brosnan and Diamonds Are Forever gunbarrels are my favorites (I think the B&W footage of Bond goes well with the latter gunbarrel). On what is most definitely a minority opinion, one of my favorite gunbarrel themes happens to be the one from Moonraker. I love the quirky sound of the opening chords and the use of horns and trumpets in the melody. Other favorites include Goldfinger, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, Diamonds Are Forever, The Man with the Golden Gun, For Your Eyes Only and A View to a Kill. But I love all gunbarrel sequences and their respective music. I'm dying to know what's that version of the Bond theme heard at 12:37.

Great video, lovely break down. I've always wondered which Bond has the best accuracy in their gun barrels as some of them look like bond isn't shooting directly down the barrel. I admit i do like the 'snappiness' to Brosnan's gun Barrell and if Sean didn't have that wobble I'd put this Thunderball over Timothy Daltons Licence to Kill barrel but what i like most is how each gun barrel sequence is unique to its film.

Another note on the CR gunbarrel. As Bond isn't yet the cinematic legend we're used to, not even the barrel he's earned has the Bond theme attached. You Know My Name serving as the proto-theme throughout the film is foreshadowed here.

Agree. It was for me a tossup between Brosnan and Dalton, leaning toward Brosnan. Purely from a shooting stance aspect, I feel Brosnans was the best. No hop, no sweeping arm or leg movements, no crouching. No wasted motion. Just saunters into frame, plants that right foot, rotates slightly on the balls of his feet while bringing the gun up to abdominal level punching it toward the target, firing when it comes to eye level. Dalton has a LITTLE more body movement but his right foot lands where it would have were he only walking, he goes into a slight crouch but it's an aggressive one where he's leaning into the target and it's that aggression that makes up for everything else.

Almost perfect list! Maybe only "Goldfinger"(1964) was the wrong choice. I mean, the film itself is great of course, but the gunbarrel not so much, I think. "Dr. No"(1962) had a better gunbarrel(thanks to music). *** I adore: 1962, 1965, 1967, 1969, 1971, 1973, 1977, 1979, 1981, 1983, 1985, 1987, 1989, 1995. And THE BEST IS: "TSWLM"(1977)!!! It is especially perfect compared to the previous one, "TMWTGG"(1974). 1974= cheap look/poor music. 1977= glamorous look/cool music. *** And finally, the worst gunbarrels are: 2008, 2012, 2015, 2021. I was surprised by your choice for number one. Sounds good. I am wondering what you think of George Lazenby’s gun barrel sequence OHMSS. I have to say it has become my number one. I’ve become a fan pf that movie more and more through the years.

You really need to do a video ranking all the James Bond gunbarrel gun shot sound effects. There are couple that sound somewhat the same but almost all of the have a different sound. Not just a top 10, but all 25 films. 😁😎

The intro in Goldeneye always hits me like a truck. I love the industrial sound Eric Serra always brings to the table. It was a great start to a new era. Sadly the movies went down hill from there. :(

There's absolutely no way License to Kill could actually be anyone's choice of number 1 gun barrel scene- personally I think it's one of the worse (after Golden Eye), still, all a matter of personal perference- top three for me in order is Spy Who Loved Me, Goldfinger and The world is Not enough

Kinda surprised Craig isn't featured more prominently in this, given that he is the only actor to have a newly filmed gun barrel for each of his films (and yes I am super mad that they put it at the end in Quantum and Skyfall). I like how in Skyfall and even more notably in Spectre. Craig is the only Bond who also swings his right arm while walking, making the gun visible before the shot. Kind of underlines his no-nonense-style for me. No Time To Die on the other hand has some nice foreshadowing in how it omits the blood but instead let's Craig's silhouette fade away. Edit: Apart from this, this is a great list to go into such detail for a sequence so similar throughout all films!

I’m pretty sure you’re a younger person based on your reviews. I’m not challenging, just commenting. The thing that might not be apparent is that early on Bond films were more on the adult side of things. Not for kids. I remember not being allowed to go see Goldfinger because it was a dirty film (I was about 6 yo when it was released). Of course, as the franchise grew they got better at producing all of the Bond sequences, with a few exceptions. The best Bond will always be Connery. It’s indisputable, with Craig coming in a distant second. The reason is Connery’s arrogance in the character. He was unforgiving, which added to the mystique of the character. Moore was terrible, except for Live and Let Die. Dalton was okay and I liked his portrayal of Bond. Bronson was better than expected, but his Bond did not fare well at the box office.

Interesting to hear you say that about Goldfinger considering it spawned countless children's toys at the time. Fleming certainly intended his creation to be for adults, but I think Cubby Broccoli always wanted Bond to be for everybody.
