Absolutely and this sht was lost on me as kid watching GW on Cartoon Network. You see the bright colors, the cool suits, and the cool action sequences, and you forget a 15yr old kid doesn’t know sht about war and the implications this story had.

Sandrock protecting Quatre and self-destructing had me emotional watching it the first time as a kid. Was awesome when Quatre finally got to pilot it again after it had been rebuilt and led the Maganac Corps.

@@LockeLynx I thought of that too but according to the wiki, the Sandrock's Self Destruct mechanism is different to the other Gundams because it's programmed to make sure the pilot survives the blow instead of blowing up directly like what happened to Heero

it was a cool design yes but i didn't feel like it went as well with the background story as the others it has a vary roman look but with middle eastern sword on the other had deathsyth and wing zero look like differnt versions of death heavy arms is a human tank and naku is a eastern dragons i feel a gundam that look more like the maganac corps suits would have been beter

I had this toy in the early 00s and didn’t even know about the show. I did watch it during 2020 and man it’s my favorite Gundam series right behind Gundam Seed Destiny

Sandrock is an interesting machine. Stated in the series itself it is "strongest", part of why they used it to show Epyon being able to overpower it. Also heaviest armor. The grunt suits fighting it is akin to naval cruisers with 8" guns fighting a Battleship. All they can do is chip away at it for ages to where eventually they might get an actual hit in. Sandrock is much better equipped then people give it credit for. Too bad the animators reused the same animation for Sandrock killing two Leos like 240 times in the 50 episodes. Sandrock had, admitted in the series, the worst pilot of the group- although this must be in perspective compared to all the grunts. Like saying the worst player on a proffesional sports team really. Speaking of pilots, I don't think it was a coincidence they chose the pilot of a heavily melee focused suit to have the closest relationship with the suit with almost all ranged weapons. This aspect is not really explored in the series though. I think one of the most interesting aspects of Sandrock in it's design is how it compares in the group. As the Gundams were designed to perform one all out attack in order to crush their enemy, longevity was not actually supposed to be a concern. Wing got 3 shots. Heavy Arms had ammo limits. Deathscythe had a beam weapon and not much to back it up, once energy is depleted it would be virtually unarmed.(This happens to Zero at the end of the series) Then there is Sandrock. Tons of armor. Weapons that don't require energy to function. I forget if this was mentioned in the series or not- but the pilot was the most passive and peace seeking of the group, compared to the extreme opposite in Wing gundam, 3 shots and a pilot focused on mission completion. The EW version I think they did better animating the agility in the suit, in the series Sandrock is an absolute brute, tanking meaningless fire to charge in, but also we see it doing fast maneuvers to catch an attacker to the flanks off guard. usually with the same, overused, repeated spin animation(Sandrock got the worst of recycled animations by far!) but in EW the battles are much more choreographed. As for looks, I like the original, non upgraded versions from the series for all 5 better then the upgrades, but I don;t count Wing and Zero as the same suit. I really like the look of Sandrock, it gives off a proud warrior vibe and the coloring and design makes me think of older series more then the other suits do. I think maybe the armor plates make the legs look shorter, the other suits have very long legs compared to older Gundam series. It gives me a Gundam MKII or Nu Gundam vibe for some reason. Not that resembling other suits is good or bad, but it ironically makes Sandrock stand out within this series as the others don't have that vibe for me.

Sandrock is very strong but strongest would have to go to Zero or Epyon. That time Zeches kept attacking him first wasn't because it was the strongest, it was because Quatre was the brains and stratagy maker, taking him down would ensure the others would fall apart and be easy to pick off

@@digitaladventurer2142 The second sentence in my comment says Epyon overpowered it. Wing made plenty of scenes to ensure the viewer knew Zero and Epyon were the new biggest baddest, a different class. Epyon had to be stronger then Sandrock, move faster then Deathscythe, etc etc.

@@davenhla Yeah but even only counting the original 5 its still hard to say if Sandrock was strongest. Each of the 5 specalized in a different area so it really would depend on the pilot IMO and due to Quatrae's gentle and more peaceful nature I feel any of the other 4 could beat him with their gundams.

It's a defensive machine. An aggressive pilot would be better off with something like Deathscythe or Shenlong/Altron, which are lighter, faster, and designed for quick, aggressive strikes. Go figure, they have the two most aggressive pilots using them.

Quatre is an agressive pilot though. When he piloted Wing Zero he almost killed Trowa. And almost Heero as well. When it comes down to it they are all aggressive.

I absolutely adore all of the gundam's from this show. Despite that I still get annoyed how they can just sit there and face tank thousands of shots from beam rifles, Missiles and machine guns without even flinching unless the plot says it's time for them to take damage. Still love Wing

This, they’re shown to be capable of maneuvering around enemy fire, but most of the time, they brute force through and show that battle damage graying. Although, I think for endless waltz, they were accounting for limiting environmental damage, and had to tank the aggro

I read somewhere that the Sandrock was physically the strongest of the 5 Gundams. With that strength required to wield its heat shovels one-handed each. Don't know if this is correct, though.

Well, Quatre became quite a leader, even if he was quite reluctant to assume this role… But there is a reason he was chosen to get a copy of the Zero system by the system itself, even though Quatre did refuse to get it at first, and, if I remember correctly, uninstalled it thereafter

Sandrock is the single most wasted potential of any main cast Gundam of all time. Out of the whole Gundam wing series the only real time you needed Sandrock was to blow it's self up. There is no other scene that absolutely needed it to be there. What I mean by waste potential? The pilot had the greatest super power...the power of money. He could have paid the R&D to link the zero system to the mobile doll system and drone out the Meganac corp with planet defensors. Essentially turning the Sandrock from a heavy defense oriented suit to a Commander.

Heero installed the Zero System in Sandrock for Quatre to use once. After that, Quatre didn't want anything else to do with it. (considering what Quatre did with Wing Zero during its first appearance, I can see why)

@@killerb255 Hero and Zechs traded Zero and Epyon because they didn't like how their versions of the zero system worked. Quatre could have gotten it tuned for himself or even watered it down to the point it could have worked.

I always had issues with sandrock. becuase it was ALWAYS holding the khopeshes wrong and using them wroong.

His weapons are referred to as heat shotels. If I'm not mistaken, the way Sandrock held them was correct for a shotel

@@residentrump3271the design wise its much closer to a khpesh, especially with that bit at tis type. khopesh would ahve those to increase the energy transfer. a shotel does not have that aspect. more so the shotel was flexible. crescent curve allows for a bit more reach and to hook around enemy defenses. however the rounded outside would be use to properly hack things apart.

@@taddad2641 whilst you're right that the way he uses the blade is not the most predominant way a shotel was used I do believe it was sharp on both ends to allow someone to use it this way if need be. Also it is a Shopel, if you check Khopesh tend to be way more angular than round with their curve being almost rectangular if you get what I mean.

it was meant as the "command" unit, it may've had quirks or features not found in the other gundams.

@@GundamReviver again all of the gundam dr's hated the idea of mobile dolls sense a real flesh and blood soilder could defy a order like hey shoot down that plan full of civilians the dolls would just shoot at what the controller marked as a target so i cant see them punting any kinda system like that Dr. J even made it so there wasnt a timer in the winged gundam the poilet had to push the button to self destruk

For some reason I never liked this one or deathscythe they seemed so one dimensional when it comes to combat. The most versatile is nataku, after that would be either heavy arms or 01.

Deathscythe is supposed to be capable of not appearing on sensors making it an ambush/assassin type. It’s supposed to be able to fade in and out of a battle zone. Ofc it’s also a Gundam. It’s like a level 100 player appearing in a level 20 zone. Sandrock was built primarily for land combat and had a good C&C system meant to coordinate others. That’s why he can operate a unit of other Mobile suits more effectively than others. He doesn’t need to be more aggressive, his role is to be a force multiplier and keep situational awareness of the combat theatre, not just his own situation.

Sandrock was able to protect Its pilots last wish before self-destruct, so it’s not really the weakest Gundam.

@@samjey7777 Functionally it is. Even if it has sentience of its own, Its weapons simply don't stack up to the other 4 even in its later itterations. Wing and its later varients outmaneuver and outgun it in every regard, Deathscythe's melee output and stealthy mobility make it a one man army in most MS engagments, Heavy Arms has an unapologetic amount of munitions for someone to try and avoid, and Altron is both extremely mobile and long reaching for a melee oriented unit. Sandrock among all of them is the most Grunt like, being used primarily as a less effective melee suit (as it uses heat weapons) and a commander suit with more advanced coms and intel gathering tech. Its built to be a leader, but independently it is by far the easiest one to challenge. Those Shotels it has have been seen to break under enough pressure and before Endless Waltz those were apperently all it was equip with.
