In this one I am using only a circular saw and impact driver to build a huge archery target and the material cost is nothing. If you are even slightly handy and want a free target, check this out!

Something not many target tutorials mention, crossbows. I hunt with both, compound and crossbow. This target 100% stops a 405 feet per second crossbow. The bolt only went half way in. My 70lb compound arrow went about a quarter of the way. I found my plastic wrap from Sam's club, for those needing ideas.
@GunflintDesigns
@GunflintDesigns Жыл бұрын
Thanks for pointing that comparison out! You really get out of this what you put in it, literally! If you pack it tight enough it'll stop anything you want to throw at it. If you go at it half-heartedly, it won't stop anything. You can't go until you run out of plastic wrap and assume its good enough - you have to keep stuffing until there is truly no more room inside. I've also had people tell me they laid a ratchet strap around the inside and used that to compress the packing as a last step before sealing in up.

@@GunflintDesigns since initially posting my comment I've come across another extra (ish) step. Make sure you really pack every possible area on the first few layers. I was lazy and just stuffed it in. The center was beautifully packed but the bottom corners had some soft spots. Basically, take a few extra seconds to make sure it's actually packed and there aren't any voids. My buddy stripped the fletching off his bolt because of it. So I unpacked and repacked. Hands down, this is the winning formula for a home made, large target. I've already got plans to improve when I make a new target. Thank you again for posting this idea, I probably wouldn't have made it so nicely and as easily as I did with out this template.

Of all the DIY archery-target videos I've watched, this is unquestionably one of-if not THE-best. I obviously don't know the idiots who complained about your use of tools in the first version, but they probably weren't breast-fed properly by their mothers, and they need to get into psychotherapy without delay. Here's another good source of "stuffing": These days, every boat yard and boat dealer shrink-wraps its boats, whether new or used. And every year, that shrink-wrap gets pulled off and discarded. This is an environmental disaster in every respect, but it provides DIY target makers with a virtually unlimited supply of free stuffing. In addition, the plastic shrink-wrap "film" is heavy enough to use as a target face. In fact, you can wrap the whole target with it to fend off the effects of rain and/or snow.. Best, Chris (in Maine)

Dude, I laughed a lot at the tool commentary! Hilarious! I’ve seen those comments on other videos and I’ve never understood why people are so obsessed with being outraged about something so silly! I’ve always used videos and plans that require tools I don’t have as the reason to save up and purchase the tool. It ALWAYS makes more sense to spend money on a tool that I can use for the item that I’m building and then also use for a billion other projects as time goes on as opposed to spending money on an item that I can build that will undoubtedly not be as good or last as long as the one that I can build to suit my exact needs and that I will ensure is perfect. I’ve never gotten pissed off at a content creator that is spending his time and money to help me figure out how to do something because he has more tools than I do!! Good lord!!! Good project man. Thanks!!

Man, your commentary is bliss! I agree with the fact that if you are watching this video because it says “free” then you either received a free bow or possibly using a cattail bow and river birch twig as an arrow. A wise man once said, there’s no such thing as a free lunch. Great video and happy hunting!

for those that need an even cheaper option. 2, 2x4x10-$9.32 4, 1/2" carriage bolts, hex nuts and washers-$12.20 and then all those amazon, and pizza boxes you have because we all know you're poor for some reason - free. if you don't actually have any, just go to any restaurant and ask them if you can have all their boxes from the day, regardless it's free. you don't really need to get it super thick, maybe 4 boxes thick maybe more. cut out 4, 4" pieces. you can use a hack saw or a power saw, doesn't matter. and you should now have 4, 4" boards and 2, 2" boards. stack the 4" boards evenly ontop of each other. using a 5/8 drill bit drill a hole through all 4 boards at the top and bottom, if it doesnt reach all the way through, don't fret, just take off one board and drill in the same spots again, keep doing this until it's drilled all the way through. drill 2 screws each into 2 of the 4" boards into the middle of the 2" boards. now you have the feet. take your boxes, stack them onto the 4" boards that are attached to the feet. put your carriage bolts through the holes. put the other 4" boards onto the carriage bolt. put the washers on and then the hex nuts. tighten the hex nuts all the way down. don't stop tightening until you've gotten it as tight as you can. congratulations you've got a target the is less than $25. you don't have to replace anything except the things that came to you free, ie the boxes.

Finishing up the animated 3D model in the next few days. Then the files will be shipped off to the art director for layout design, and the step by step text will go out to a proofreader. Once those files get assembled and returned, it's over to the board of directors for up to 6 weeks for final approval. I'll post an update when it's ready.

Excellent target. I cut up a former billboard made of corrugated plastic sheeting for the target surface and used sheep wool to fill the box with. Most farmers in NZ are happy to give sheep wool away these days because it has very little value. Target functions perfectly and makes a satisfying "thwock" sound each time an arrow hits it. It will be interesting to see how long the plastic sheeting lasts. So far, it's holding up well.

I remember that day I got my first bow. I was excited to shoot something and made a target at home from old cardboard boxes and compressed left over newspaper stacks with varying levels of compression. Changed the tips by cutting an eraser into six pieces so the papers would soak up the blunt hit. This way the shaft would last longer and the impact damage is absorbed completely by the newspapers. And it feels safe enough. I made some for my friends as well. I like your design and material choice. I'll try and find it locally! As for monsoon, wrapping it around in plastic should do the trick.

Myea targets are a pain to source cheap. Your version seems like a version that you have in the backyard and if you do not have a cheap source for the screen it might get too expensive. What I think would be much faster are the big sand bags (maybe not as durable but than you can replace only the fabric that is damaged). Theoretically the same idea something to fill up with what ever but it takes way less time to build it and you do not need any tools at all:)).

Can I still make this if I use a Festool tracksaw and buy all new materials 😂 Good stuff man, that looks like a nice target!

I just built something very similar to this with the Third Hand Archery target skins. My 5mm Victory arrows zip through to the fletching and I have ripped several fletchings off. I used the same plastic and pallet wrap but still can't get it to stop my 490 grain arrows out of my 70# Mathews at 275fps. I'll repack it today but any advice would be appreciated.

Man I'm sorry your's has been eating your arrows. I shoot Gold Tip Pierces - 475 grains at 280fps and they only go in 4-6 inches. There is some sort of evil void I can't seem to fix toward the bottom of mine. All I can say is pack, pack and pack. It takes 3-4 times as much material as you think it should. I'm roughly 170lbs, and if I stand on the stuff and it moves at all, then I pack more in. You could try laying a ratchet strap in the frame before you fill it, then use that to compress everything.

Great design, just made 2 of these myself. woven plastic weed barrier makes a pretty good target face and is readily available at most hardware stores.

Good idea. I'd also spray pain the faces white with targets afterwards.

How long did this last with the weed barrier? I might do the same.

I wonder if the shrink wrap they use on boats would work. Any marina would have tons of it in the spring time. Great5 job and thanks for the idea. I plan on trying it.

Mark, I'm only 3 min in and I see you've used 4 tools as yet.. Driver, Tape Measure, Pencil, Saw.... LIES SO MANY LIES!! ha ha as I type you're yelling at me for pointing this out! I like it Mark, I may have to build one now that I know I can do it without $5,000,000,000 worth of tools!

It is crazy that you had to make this video in response to people who couldn't figure that the best tool for the job is always the tool you have. Surely people that cannot figure how to improvise, on such a simple thing, should not be in charge of Archery equipment.

I built mine with no tools. I karate chopped all of the wood, and turned the screws in with my thumb and forefinger.

How would layers of compressed carboard do for filler and how compressed do you think they'd have to be? I'm thinking about all the Amazon boxes we get that could be used this way.
