Intercropping in rice using jute gunny bags. Growing vegetables (Cabbage, cauliflower, coriander, bottle gourd, bittergourd, raddish, pumpkin) in rice fields. Growing vegetables in stagnant water condition. CRIJAF.
This is a system of growing vegetable crops in waterlogged rice field avoiding anoxia using gunny bag based soil columns. This increases water productivity, cropping intensity, net return per unit area and provide nutritional security to farmers. This work has been done at ICAR-CRIJAF from 2011-2016. The crop has to be managed by standard package of practices. In this system 4-5 tonnes of paddy and 30 to 600 quintals of different vegetables can be harvested. brings highest profit (1:5-7) in this system. If farmers' can grow 25 columns of different vegetables in 330 sq. m area farmers, they will be able to harvest pesticide free vegetable for own consumption, even if 40 percent of vegetables are lost by pest and diseases.
This will increase consumption of jute gunny bags in non conventional areas
