GUNPOWDER FALLS - Northern Maryland's Wild Brown Trout

After a long, dry, and hot summer, I decided to give this Northern Maryland cool-tailwater Brown Trout Fishery a go over the course of two days (rained out 1st day). The area around Gunpowder Falls Sate Park is beautiful and the water stays cool year round, making for an excellent wild trout fishery. Managing 7 or 8 trout total (including one pushing 12inches), I am always amazed at the quality and character this stream offers.

Yeah, you’ve got something here that’s different than the other fishing channels. I’m kinda known as a funny guy and what I would say is just keep saying jokes you’ll have some nice keepers in there. Love the funny and the fishing.

In Maryland, I lived across from the Gunpowder State Park. I find that area so serene and have many fond memories of playing in the woods. I saved a photo as my wallpaper.

@@TravelingTroutCo Many a trout caught in those streams in Maryland with my dad. Unfortunately, my father is now dying of cancer.

On occasion you will catch an 18" breeder . Rainbow and Brown. Just make sure to keep the eggs in the water. Had a blue heron attack me while fishing. Ate 3 fish. Three 16" - 18" stocked Rainbow Trout. Followed me down the river and as soon as I would release the fish it would swoop down and eat the fish. 2 gulps. Once it tried eating the fish while it was still on the hook. Freaked me out. Friend grabbed a tree branch and hit the bird until it let the fish go. Didnt know what else to do. This was right after they stocked the river. One week. But yeah, most of the Brown trout are around 8-12".The bigger fish , like a dark rooster tail with orange spots. 3/4" ounce. Lines tight.

Thanks man! Gunpowder is less than an hr. from me and a quality wild trout fishery. Only downside is that its usually (at least when I go) crowded.

Your biggest concern is flash flood not lightning i got caught in a storm and that river rose surprisingly quick. I had to climb up the hill when the trail was inendated

I I’ve pretty close to the gunpowder and have fly fished there 3 times. Have lost a fish or two but have yet to catch one. 7-11 inch browns are most common but the river also holds big browns.

I know for sure you can hike and fish all the way up to the spill way (and fish above it as well for Brookies I believe) but as far as camping, I'm sure you can somewhere in the surrounding State Park, but as a PA guy, honestly not 100% positive.
