This scene is from the episode "The Sodbusters" which was aired on November 20, 1972. Alex Cord is a "Semi-Retired" gunslinger who is helping out some Homesteaders(Sodbusters) get their farms going, but a Wealthy Landowner(Morgan Woodward) has been leaning on the Sodbusters to leave their land so he can use their water rights in which he doesn't have at the moment. Woodward hires a gunslinger to get rid of Alex Cord who is backing the sodbusters and telling them to stand up to the rich landowner. Alex Cord does in the "paid" gunslinger which leads to several problems as the episode progresses. Alex Cord(Pete Brown) is one "Cool" customer! You can spot "Young" Harrison Ford as one of Morgan Woodward's Hands.

This one was particularly good. Later in episode, Underwood (the villain) talks with Matt, and we see that he's not just a 2-dimensional cutout, he's got his reasons for being the way he is, he's alienated from civilization and people in general, but he genuinely loves the valley in its wild state, it's not just personal greed, he ended up the way he is for reasons. He's in the wrong, but it's possible to sympathize with him even so.

NOTHING LIKE watching these old Westerns, and I still do as much as I can, I wish they were still being shown, so much more entertaining, than all the reality trash that is aired today. Except incorrect blank cartridges were used. To be true to the era (1870s) the prop person should have supplied blackpowder blanks. The prop man also gets a failing grade for supplying Alex Cord's belt and holster. Instantly evident, his efficient fast-draw rig is WAY TOO CONTEMPORARY. Why this choice makes Clint Eastwood's 'man-with-no-name,' anachronistic, modern rig(s) look like ancient artifacts. "Two thumbs down." As declaring this "best 'Gunsmoke' gunfight" I'll counter this is a good showdown. Historically, "Gunsmoke" had some 'doozies' of gunfights with multiple shooters and dozens and dozens of rounds fired; sometimes enhanced with plumes of smoke, agitated horses moving about, lots of dust displayed; accompanied by thrilling background music scores. Here it's simply/basically 'one-and-done.' I'll wager that if this was produced prior to the total, game-changing, pre-anti-tv-violence-edicts-of-1968, Morgan Woodward's hired hands would have been 'itchin' for a fight' and NOT have 'stepped aside' resulting in two, three or four of them being shot off their horses in two seconds after the initial target went down -- all due to Alex Cord's cool, collected expertise with a six-gun. . . . . However, "two thumbs up" for the staging. As played here and as previously stated, Alex Cord is an experienced gunhawk, positioning himself strategically. Notice the bright, low sun is shining right into the killer-eyes of his opponent, Morgan Woodward's hired gun, making Cord a challenging target, a difficult shot. Excellent staging of the principals and glorious camera work when Morgan Woodward and his cronies ride into view. All of this is enhanced by (1972) filming on (distant) location. BTW Cord SECURELY tying his wounded, limp opponent across the saddle would surely ensure and speed up the process of death by bleeding-to-death. . . . . Tragically, for western fans and die-hard "Gunsmoke" devotees, in "Gunsmoke'"s twilight years WAY TOO MANY episodes' exterior scenes filmed on the base studio CBS Studio Center's compressed, claustrophobic-feeling backlot. In particular, the farm/ranch/way station area known as the Duchess on studio maps. Over and over and over we saw that, 'dressed' and re-configured in various forms. By the early 1970s Los Angeles and adjacent Ventura Counties' "wide-open-spaces" location ranches in Westlake, Conejo, Thousand Oaks and Newberry Park -- that provided the likes of "Gunsmoke," "Wagon Train," "Rawhide," "The Virginian," etc. and western feature films so much 'scope' -- had been sold and developed for commercial and residential properties. . . . The 20th and final season of "Gunsmoke" has been restored and released on DVD -- joining the previous 19, "thank you, CBS/Paramount" -- so now the fans as well as the first-timers and curious can see the real deal and not the butchered (i.e., cut by as much as 8 minutes with no watchable End Titles and Theme), distorted prints the likes of TV Land presents.

Morgan Woodward was the quintessential old cowboy bad-guy! He and Jack Elam fit into a special slot of actors who could walk straight into a part in these things. The movie Shane paved the way for many western story lines to include this scene, which is a loose take on the show down with Alan Ladd's character out dueling Jack Palance's character. Once as a stone cold killer uncle of Festus, and once as a clownish Hagen relative. "Matt's Love Story" is another I'd like to record if it ever comes up. The fastest draw in Hollywood was character actor john Ducette but Cord is pretty quick. The way he holds his holster one can see that he trained with quick draw artists. By this time Gunsmoke really was an anthology series which gave great roles to guys like Alex Cord, Morgan Woodward, and my favorite William Smith.

James Caan directed one movie he starred in, "Hide In Plain Sight." Excellent film, based on a true story. The Villain in this scene played the villain in that movie. Just like here, he played it straight and REAL. He was a gangster in Caan's film.
