This reminds me of when I was little enough to be small but still big enough to wander around a small store for a moment without my parents watching me, then I thought I'd find my mom but really it was a woman with a similar hair color and coat and I'd seen her from behind, so I just kinda awkwardly stood near her for a few seconds then felt intense embarrassment without her even noticing.

Yes I have, actually. One of my college professors also happened to know one of my friends, so as we were passing the professor at the campus, they shook hands. Then I guess he was about to move his hand back, but hesitated, so I instinctively tried to shake his hand too, but by the time I reached my hand out to him, he was starting to move it back already, so I ended up accidentally grabbing his wrist and shaking it. We were both so shocked, that neither of us even spoke a word after this and we just walked our separate ways. I still wake up screaming sometimes.

My friend once had a similar situation at a music lesson, he was playing xylophone (everyone was playing an instrument, because we were practicing) and then when it was his part, he played it, all good, then at the end, when the teacher walked up to his desk and reached out for xylophone sticks, my friend shook his hand instead. That's a story I will never forget.

This is like when I went to visit one of my favorite karate instructors at the new studio she had just started and she opened her arms up in a sort of “look at you!” gesture while she was commenting on how much I’d grown, so I took that as a sign that she was looking for a hug. I was wrong. I’m still super embarrassed about this even though I haven’t seen her in 10-15 years.
