A Gurkha who single-handedly fought off an attack by more than a dozen Taliban fighters, has been awarded Britain's second highest military medal - the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross. As the name suggests, it is given for acts of 'conspicuous gallantry' and is second only to the Victoria Cross, which is awarded for 'most conspicuous bravery'.
In over fifteen minutes of fighting Acting Sergeant Dipprasad Pun fired four hundred rounds of ammunition, 17 grenades and, when his rifle jammed, threw his tripod at the enemy knocking one of his attackers down.

1 Gurkha versus 15 Tailbans is hardly a fair fight. They should have improved the odds by sending in 30 Tailbans.

Awesome Facts Gorkha is the district of Nepal. At the time of PNS. Gorkhali are the one who is from gorkhali district and they fought with other states to unify nepal into one country, so they say the word aayo gorkhali cuz they were from gorkha. Well I feel proud that my ancestors were from gorkha district and they fought the war that unified single Nepal. I've hear that in tista river they used to wash the blood form the khukuri.

***** No, uddos. The difference is that the gurkha is fighting under allegiance to the Queen against several armed men who are trying to kill him. A Muslim suicide bomber is just trying to kill as many defenceless civilians as he can. There is a difference there; the Muslim Extremist is no hero. Also, please don't confuse Muslim Extremist with every follower of Islam. They don't all need to be under that umbrella.

***** Afghanistan is not a Taliban country; it's just infested with Taliban Insurgency. The reason the Gurkhas were there, is because they're in the British Army. Gurkhas are, believe it or not, the most respected regiment in, and by the British Army, including the 22nd Regiment (the SAS). A lot of regiments were involved in the Afghan war, and the Gurkha Regiment was one of them.

I remember a story about these lads, in the second world war they were being trained as parachutists in the Airborne division; and before their first training flight and drop, they were briefed on the fact they would be dropping out of the plane at 400 ft. This caused consternation and alarm within their ranks as they talked away in their own language among themselves. The officer impatiently interrupts the commotion to ask what is all the fuss about, when a Gorkha asks 'Sir, the men would prefer to be dropped out at 200 ft,'. To which the officer exclaimed 'Why? That is too low, the parachutes won't have time to open!' With this there was a collective sigh of relief among the Gorkhas, and the one who voiced their concerns said, 'ah, that is fine. We thought we were jumping without parachutes!'. They were prepared to jump out of a plane at 200 ft without!!! Says it all.

My dad was RAF, I served in the Canadian forces in the 70's. I Met a Gorkha officer while training in Ontario and he disappeared on me in an open field with short grass. I was his driver and couldn't go back without him so I searched for him for 40 minutes. When I stepped on him for the third time, he grabbed my ankle and told me I was dead with a smile on his face. My uncle served with them in Burma and told me stories of them slipping snakes into the sleeping bags of soldiers they thought were not strong. I have always said that if I had to go into battle I want a van doux (Royal 22 Regiment of Canada) on my left and a Gurkha on my Right. God Bless the Nepalese Soldier! Thank you all for your service over the centuries.

I'm no military man nor am I too knowledgeable about matters such as these, however, looking into it it seems that the difference between Conspicuous Gallantry Cross and the Victoria Cross is that in order to get the Victoria Cross you have to do something that is not expected, for lack of a better word. What Dipprasad Pun did was he defended his position, if he didn't he was going to die. If he was in his position and saw another position was being overrun and he chose to run to and save the position then he may well have received the Victoria Cross. If you look at a few of the Victoria Cross recipients it tends to be that they put themselves at further risk in order to help others. If you look at some other Gurkhas who revied a victoria cross. Gaje Ghale chose to ignore his significant wounds during a conflict and chose to continue fighting and leading his men. Bhanbhagta Gurung's unit came under fire, first a sniper and later several foxholes and each time he abandoned his cover and charged the enemy.

My uncle was with the VanDoos in the Korean war. While on guard duty in a foxhole on the front lines he and his platoon were instructed to tie their boot laces in a certain way, and to keep them that way. Without explanation. It turns out that a platoon of Gurkhas was going on an exploritory mission and would be crawling into foxhole holes looking for the enemy by feeling how their laces were tied. If your boot laces were not tied as instructed you were deemed to be the enemy and subject to being beheaded. My uncle told us that captured enemy soldiers were absolutely terrified of having to face Gurkhas. He also told us that these soldiers were fearless, respectful, humble and did everything at double time. In all my uncle's career he stated that their best allies ever were the Gurkhas. God bless them for being on our side.

Just saw this .. I agree 110% Why ! the f*ck this guy did not receive the VC I can only think that these guy's are still being treated as 2nd class citizens by the British Government. ( and before anyone starts I'm UK born and breed 50yrs ) It's a shame "Joanna Lumly " has not been aware and SHAMED the British Forces / Government into awarding this guy the VC .. Wouldn't have been surprised if "They didn't Fine / Punish him for misuse of Military Property; ie. throwing machine gun tripod at the enemy". Yet.. we allow illegal imigrants into this country day after day .. feed / cloth and house them ... then shit on the "Gurkha's" Makes me angry, I was going to be ashamed to be British .. But I'm proud of our "Forces" and I respect Any guy that serves his country ; British or not. "Per Mare, Per Terram"

In all fairness, the VC is awarded only very rarely, and often enough posthumously -- of the fourteen since WW II, 8 were posthumous. The last non-posthumous award was in 2005 to a Grenadian private, Johnson Beharry -- if you're keeping track of race, Beharry is not white. The last non-posthumous award in the British Army before that was in 1965, forty years earlier: it was awarded to (then) Lance Corporal Rambahadur Limbu of the 10th Gurkha Rifles. (Two soldiers in the Australian army also received non-posthumous VCs in the late 60s.) Brave and valorous as L.Cpl. Pun's actions were, they're weren't quite up to the standard required for a VC. Take Rambahadur Limbu's actions on Borneo: Two soldiers from his detachment had been wounded and were lying where Indonesian soldiers could fire directly on them. One of them had been carrying the group's Bren gun as well. Limbu, whom other Gurkhas were trying to cover, attempted to get close enough to rescue his two wounded comrades. However, he soon decided that he would just have to make a run for it. To the utter amazement of those covering him, he simply sprang up, ran straight into the line of Indonesian fire and, with bullets flying all round him, picked one man up and carried him to safety. He had cheated death once, but that still left one wounded comrade to rescue, and to the shock of the others Limbu, having set down the first wounded man, turned round and ran right back into a hail of bullets. He picked up the second man and brought him back too. Death cheated twice. Yet the unit's Bren gun was still out there. One guess as to L.Cpl. Limbu's next action. Having secured the Bren gun, he then led his unit against the Indonesians' position; in the ensuing action he killed four Indonesians. This is the sort of thing for which the VC is awarded. N.b., by the way, the sequence of L.Cpl. Limbu's actions: first, rescue comrades; second, secure gun; third, lead attack. Incidentally, it was only when the Indonesians were in full retreat that Limbu noticed on his uniform the bits of brain from one of the two men whom he had rescued. Sadly, both later succumbed to their injuries.

30 years ago a friend was in the British Army. Just before he went out for sentry duty one night the sergeant called the sentries together to tell them that Gurkhas would be coming through the lines that night but they wouldn't see them or hear them. My friend thought 'I'm an experienced professional soldier, I'll be able to spot them'. He concentrated on spotting the Gurkhas and only realised they had gone through the lines when he found his shoelaces had been tied together.

The majority of British are incredibly proud and nationalistic when it comes to the British Armed Forces, yet somehow they (we) seem to reserve a very special kind of admiration for the Gurkhas that other British branches, battalions, regiments etc. would love to receive. They really are something quite special, its difficult to say what exactly. Incredible soldiers and personalities.

Gurkha were also in galepoli in Anzac war. As Australian from nepali decendent I am very proud of my ansestors. British officer said Gurkha were worth every gold that they cost. And also said if they had more Gurkha galepoli would never have cost as much as it did. Even a beach in Turkey was named as Gurkha beach. They achieved something many didn't think it was achievable. Gurkha were in British side of the campaign and were one of the first to enter and last to leave. 200000 of them served in WW1 and I believe all Nepali decendent are proud of New Zealand especially the man that climbed Everest and is also in today newzeland money. 😀 I hope you know who I mean. I know all newzeland know of him but just giving some friendly riddle. Something else to be proud of. Newzeland a country with the clearest water and the inventor of Bungy jump. I have visited both island of newzeland. And did not knew it was once part of nsw. A state in Australia. Either way I think newzeland is one of the greatest and chill nation in world.
