@@yaboijebus1418 Because Evangelion is warning. Idea was to show depressed society what isolation and unresolved problem pile will bring. Meta is that Evangelion is loop where Shnji and others live same hopeless life again and again and end is always same because no one brings solution. Hideaki was upset how people treat the point of series. People found it as a guide, not a warning and especially in Japan society it became self self-fulfilling prophecy. That's why he creates movies that are sacrilegious for people who treat series as guide. TTGL is very opposite to Evangelion but to "break the cycle" renewed Evangelion were made. New movies breaks the loop. At very beginning there are few hints that story doesn't start in same timeline as series. Minor changes in character behaviors, being more open to discuss and resolve problems in relationships breaks the loop. Ikari Gendo was portrayed as representation of those who misunderstand message from series and oppose to change

@Enoch Thomas Yes, Hideaki Anno the creator lost interest in Evangelion when he made it at the time. Yes Rebuild Evangelion arrived years later but it wasn't any better either. I personally dropped the rebuild evangelion show back in 2013 after the third movie.
