In this bonus episode, I am once again joined by Dhammarato - a lineage teacher in the Thai Buddhist tradition who is known for his unique, 1-1 teaching style conducted over Skype.
This footage was recorded right before a dialogue about the Mahasi Method between Dhammarato and Daniel Ingram. Due to a scheduling miscommunication, Dhammarato and I arrived to the recording one hour early.
It wasn’t long before Dhammarato began sharing his insights with his characteristic humour and precision and so we decided to release this informal exchange as a bonus episode.
Dhammarato discusses the role of story and how to wake up from it, what stream entry really is and how can it be verified, and the difference between sati and psychological repression.
Dhammarato also teaches a coffee meditation, talks about mindfulness in daily life, and reveals the real practice of anapanasati.

Thanks, Steve and thanks to Dhammarato. As the result of my practice I thought I had realized many high level things like non-dual states of awareness. However, I am now realizing that I need the most basic things, like dealing with unwholesome thoughts. Dhammarato's teachings are very basic, and I mean that in the most complimentary sense as in essential or fundamental. This wisdom is there for us to see and share. Really helpful teachings.

the analogy of the thorn is very helpful. dealing with it in the moment and chosing not to let it grow. I needed that!

Why is this entitled, "How to Wake Up"? That's going a bit far. I suppose it wouldn't be on KZfaq if it didn't have an extravagant title. That said, a lot of interesting worthwhile points were raised here. I get increasingly more impressed with Dhammarato every time I listen to him.

The latest research from neuro sciences indicates that the human memory is based on semantic reconstruction and not remembering i.e. images directly. Since this restruction is done each time you remember something, it makes a lot of sense that stories change (a lot) over time, isn't it?

So youre saying we should bring fourth the image and sounds and other senses (perception) rather than using sementics?

@@penguin0101 No, not at all. If the research is right it would not even be possible to bring forth such things directly, because they are not stored this way in our brains. I was just referring to what both of them said during the episode and how memories change over time by re-telling or remembering them over and over again.

Interesting - the pali word for perception - sanna - can also mean memory. The perception of say the colour blue brings into mind a ‘thought-image’ of blue which is conditioned by a memory of naming that colour at previous formative event.
