Work introduction:
Gustav Mahler's 1st Symphony also owes its existence to love - in two respects. Before Mahler became director of the Vienna Court Opera, he passed through numerous posts at various opera houses. One of his early stations was Kassel. Here he fell in love, as unhappily as Bartók later did, with the singer Johanna Richter. Mahler wrote the texts and music of his "Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen" for Johanna.
A few years later, he had an engagement in Leipzig, where he began an affair with Marion von Weber, who was married to a grandson of the composer Carl Maria von Weber. In this emotional state of emergency, Mahler composed his 1st Symphony, for which he had already been collecting ideas in recent years. Now he puts it down on paper in a veritable furor within six weeks. In the first and third movements, he quotes two of the "Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen": "Ging heut' Morgen übers Feld" and (in addition to the minor variant of the canon "Frère Jacques") a passage from "Die zwei blauen Augen". For the time being, he still called the large orchestral work "symphonic poem in two parts". This five-movement first version included a second movement entitled "Blumine." The premiere in Budapest in 1889 failed hopelessly. Although some of the audience cheered Mahler ostentatiously, most concertgoers were left perplexed by the novel music. This experience prompted the composer to revise the work for a performance in Hamburg in 1894. In reference to the novel of the same name by Jean Paul, he now gave it the title "Titan, a tone poem in symphonic form." The movements also had their own names, and Mahler had also written a program. He later discarded this idea because he had experienced that the audience lost sight of the deeper idea of his music as a result. The final version with four movements (without the "Blumine" movement and without the title "Titan") first appeared in print in 1899. Mahler subjected it to two more minor proofreading passes, the last time in 1909, a good twenty years after its composition.

Ahhh. A bassist who actually plays this with projection, perfect intonation and passion. Bravo. It’s such a difficult solo because it’s in the that range between regular left hand position and outright thumb position. Again bravo.

Musicians should not be taken for « fools » ! Especially at this instrumental and orchestral level. Pathetic musical analysis. *Lucien*

I now seek out these recordings from (usually German) public broadcaster orchestras, esp. for these types of works where the composers set high priority for clarity and no instrument is meant to hide behind any other. More often than not these broadcaster orchestras have great playing and more importantly great recording with high professional standards across entire videos without obvious blemishes. Their halls are usually very high quality too, none of the Royal Albert Hall type nonsense. Just sit back and enjoy, no worries of anything and high confidence of what you are going to get, which is what the composer set down. If I want the excitement of potential risk taking I have a local concert hall where I can go in person.

Wonderful performance! Amazing conductor Cristian Macelaru leading impeccable WDR Symphony Orchestra has proved outstanding results to be expected. The standard! Gustav Mahler: Symphony No.1 was not well received when it was premiered in 1889 in Budapest in 1889., conducted by the composer himself. The composer made several revisions. The composer used the title Titan only for the 2nd and 3rd performances and never after 1896. Gustav Mahler conducted many premieres of the Symphony with different orchestras. Thank you. Thank you , WDR Klassik for upload

The first part is well received but the second plunges the audience into astonishment and even indignation. Hungarian newspapers, including Pester Lloyd, are very critical of the work. Mahler is accused of defying all the laws of music. It's the case ! Mahler reinvents a new symphonic genre. The public of the time did not understand his musical language. It is always complicated for a young composer to change mentalities. *Lucien*

Symphony No. 1 in D major, entitled « Titan » is the first symphony of the Austro-Hungarian composer Gustav Mahler. He begins there, the writing of a work which oscillates between Symphony and symphonic poem, filled with formal and stylistic novelties. What he is trying there is radically different from what we can hear at the same time, he experiments, and it must be said, revolutionizes the genre of the Symphony. This first symphony is a gigantic hymn to Nature and its power. She is subtitled « Titan » inspired by a novel by the German writer Jean-Paul Richter, and resolutely marks a break in the career of the young Mahler, but also in the course of history, that announces Stravinsky, among others. The composition was premiered in 1889 in Budapest and is made up of 4 movements, although the piece went through several versions and revisions by its author. It is an epic, tumultuous piece which at the time has hitten the listeners. They lose their bearings, between romanticism and poetic description, the images and sounds of nature mix, the form is manhandled, the audacity is at its height in his writing. Popular music is equally present, as well as the Lied, Gustav Mahler creates atmospheres and sound places never imagined before. This symphony has remained dear to all Mahlerians as a primordial dew, an initiation to the sounds of Nature. My thanks to Cristian Măcelaru and his musicians, to whom I salute this very beautiful interpretation. *Lucien*

It actually is "Frère Jaques"; Mahler transposed the original to a minor key; however it is said that this is how the rhyme was sung in the 19th century and early 20th century in Austria.

I love the first symphony very much. The middle part of the third movement is also very wonderful and enriched my heart. I was also overwhelmed by the fanfare of the 4th movement. ❗️ Next to Walter, Jansons & Oslo Philharmonic, this is my favorite. Bravo ‼️

Thank you! A version of this (Columbia Symphony Orch. under Bruno Walter), was one of the first classical recordings I owned - a 15th birthday present from my father in 1970. I still have it. In the sleeve note, Walter comments on the use of a 4th interval for the cuckoo, instead of the usual 3rd, but I think I've myself heard one sing, either a 4th, or at least a very wide 3rd; so maybe it depends on the animal, or time of year. Also, in mediaeval times, the 4th was regarded as a dissonance, so perhaps this played a part (sorry, this was going to be a shorter comment, but it got me thinking!)

A very capable performance of the Mahler masterwork. Microphone placement obscured the countermelodies in places, but that's a minor issue. Interpretively pretty good overall, though the coda is a bit rushed for my preference. Thanks for sharing.
