9:33 ".... ah there....I'm trying to turn it into a Minor 7th, which is a slightly more 'expensive' version of the same chord..." Part of his ability as a teacher, is the fact that he is literate; both on the instrument and with the English language. Great wit. Great musicality.

I've seen and heard droves of fasting playing, shredder-type guitarists in my lifetime. But it is his playfulness & sly sense of humor that makes Guthrie Govan's hyper-virtuosic playing all the more appealing to me. #respect

You obviously haven't heard much of Bucket's songs if you think he just does weird/killswitch stuff
@Galactu511 жыл бұрын
It's all about context. The context here is that he is demonstrating and explaining the guitar to a large diverse crowd so it's important to be versatile in this situation so that at least some of what he plays will resonate with everyone. This is why versatility is important in this context. You are clearly intelligent, so why did you find something critical to say and find it hard to comprehend this "demonstration" of his guitar? Your point might be valid in isolation but here you're wrong.
@johnmacward11 жыл бұрын

Being versatile is not especially important. Honing a single minded craft is. But I've noticed how these things entertain people to no end, probably because all other avenues have been exhausted and it's simply not easy to impart the aspects of music (the parts in between the notes) which can't be taught, so we focus on the externalities. That being said, I really have no problem with GG.

IMHO Guthrie is perhaps the most technically gifted guitarist in the world. Only Satriani can compete with him in technical knowledge and skill.
@firks199110 жыл бұрын
Satriani is awesome, but hes not Guthrie's level. Satch has a great ability to bring emotion to his playing and hes likely got a better knack for writing but hes definitely not at the same technical and knowledge level as Guthrie. At least not in practise/performance... who knows what he plays in his spare time though, perhaps he knows a lot more than he tends to write and play. i think thats the case for a lot of guitarists though, i know Petrucci studied jazz etc... but theres not too much in the way of jazz lines coming through in his solo's.
@JerodimusPrime10 жыл бұрын
firks1991 You will be very hard pressed to find a guitarist that knows more about music and music theory than Joe Satriani- Guthrie Govan included. When Satriani was 18 he studied rigorously under Billy Bauer and jazz pianist Lennie Tristano, he has a complete mastery of Jazz guitar as well as other styles of guitar. Satriani plays folk guitar too, he also plays the banjo, harmonica and keyboards amongst other musical instruments. He's a true musical master. Guthrie has a more polished technique than Satriani though- so does Satriani's famous student, Steve Vai. However Satriani has mastered everything from Folk, Rock, Classical to shred and Jazz fusion guitar. He's definitely on Guthrie's level.
@firks199110 жыл бұрын
to be fair i didnt know all of what you've said. hes more accomplished than i thought. its a shame he doesnt utilise more of his abilities! i liked to see him live again actually as its been some years.
@JerodimusPrime10 жыл бұрын
firks1991 Satriani likes rock and blues because he was inspired to play guitar by listening to Jimi Hendrix, however he is one of the most technically accomplished guitarist alive. He doesn't believe in showing off but in creating what he feels is good music. I think Guthrie Govan is the same. As good as Guthrie may appear he's holding back what he can truly do with the guitar. I have great respect for both musician, IMHO they're at the very top of modern electric guitar playing.
