Guthrie Govan is widley regarded as one of, if not the most technically advanced and well-rounded players ever. This tune is from his only solo album called "Erotic Cakes", most of which is similar to Fives. If you're into the fusiony shred stuff, this is where you'll find most of it. He's also renowned for playing on Steven Wilson's albums "The Raven that Refused to Sing" and "Hand Cannot Erase". On those albums, he produced (in one take, no editing whatsoever) two solos that are also regarded as among the finest ever played in progressive (or regular) rock. They're on the tunes "Drive Home" and "Regret #9". The trio you might be thinking of is The Aristocrats, which is a rock fusion trio he's in with Bryan Beller (Satriani's current bass player) and Marco Minneman (who also played on those Steven Wilson albums and played with Satriani for a bit). Their stuff is a bit more eccentric and includes a lot of different genres. They're also fond of Zappa and you can hear a lot of his influence in their use of humour within the music. Finally, Guthrie is also the main Guitar player in Hans Zimmer's touring band. Zimmer has specifically carved out spaces in his cinematic compositions for Guthrie to improvise over, without any restraints. He's consistently on record calling Guthrie one of the greatest players of all time. Also should mention every solo he plays is completely improvised and never repeated. All that to say, the Guthrie rabbit hole is long, deep, and fulfilling! I'd recommend: The Aristocrats live DVD: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eM2PaaaIyLDVfoE.html&ab_channel=JeremiasBonifacio Drive Home: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fLhkYN2Ysa-upn0.html&ab_channel=AriaDamero Hanz Zimmer solo: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aNF4e8mWus_Jp6s.html&ab_channel=GuitarLearner Solo at John Petrucci's guitar camp where Petrucci, Abasi, and Andy James are looking bewildered at Guthrie's solo: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nalin6iIy9bLgaM.html&ab_channel=RodrigoP%C3%A9rez-Gazit%C3%BAa Happy listening!

The best solo I've ever heard is his improvisation for jam track central: larry carlton style track. The taste

Welcome to the world of Guthrie Govan! That video was taken back in like 2007. Since then he has been playing guitar for an extra 15 years...and he has gotten better. That "jazzy trio" could have been The Aristocrats, which I highly recommend listening or even making a reaction video to. Furthermore his work in the Steven Wilson albums "The Ravan That Refused to Sing" and "Hand Cannot Erase" is amazing, those two albums are probably the best music I have listened to.

Ah - He was also in "The Fellowship". Which could be called a crazy jazz trio.

That ol mate, is what Guthrie does. By the way I first heard "fives" on an album I have of Steve Vai. Guthrie is classically trained and as you can see, is a bloody genius in the true sense of the word. He's a so laid back and humble man and best of all, he's a Brit! I'm eighty one and seen guitarist come and go but Guthrie, is here for as long as he wants. Thanks, from an ex Brit living the dream for 59yrs in Australia (Brentford born) Ta.

It was great watching your reaction. I think we all had the same "absolutely blown away" reaction. And he's only gotten better. Not technically, but expressively. Truly a guitar player's player.

I've been listening to Guthrie play for decades. I remember when he used to play in a dingy little club called 'The Bassment' in his home town, Chelmsford. There were often more musicians than punters. He is such a nice guy too. Always happy to talk music, especially if you buy him beer. All of his solos are pretty much one-off, he composes them as he is playing. I don't think there is a great guitarist alive who doesn't tip his hat in Guthrie's direction. If you want to see him show off a little - try some fretless - yes, you heard that right: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kJuerKqWurazhZs.html

The "Regret #9" solo and "Get It Like That" by the Aristocrats are must-listens! Frankly, everything Guthrie touches is absolutely superb. For straight-up classic rock stuff, his work with GPS often gets overlooked. I think the solo for "Taken Dreams" (studio version) is about the most perfect rock solo I've come across, alongside his work on "Sweet Water" by Bryan Beller.

Guthrie Govan is an absolute beast. There might be guitarists out there that can play faster or even more technical, but I don't think there are many that can play that CLEAN. Well, Matteo Mancuso does come to mind...

This was great! I’d recommend checking out Paul Gilbert/Racer X Technical Difficulties. The album version is fantastic, but there is a version on KZfaq which is superior in my opinion. Here’s the link: Hope you check it out!
