True, it's easy while jamming or practising alone to scoop a lot of the midrange out, while perception tells us a mid scoop sounds good, in the context of 'the perfect mix' where you can hear every element of the band, it's not easy to work it in. When people use words like 'barky' 'growly' 'snarling' 'biting' tone, it's the mid range they are talking about. Not to say there aren't a lot of bands that use dark, mid scooped tones and still sound great or unique, though reflecting upon many great electric guitar tones down through history, the electric guitar has always been a mid range instrument. Great to hear Guthrie chant about this stuff even if it's only a minute every now and again. Always keeps me on the right track to affirm with someone who wise to their craft. Humble dude as always, to boot.
