Because only musically knowledgeable people can understand what he plays, in this case a pro guitarist. To mainstream rock-metal ear like me I can't find the difference between Guthrie and many other guitarists who have deep music theory and rarely play pentatonic bluesy licks on distorted tone. Unfortunately people like me dominate the market. We may know how brilliant he is but we won't buy tickets to his shows. There I said it. I'm ready to be burned at a stake.

I agree this is a great series. I purchased the late night sessions #3 on JTC and it's really cool to be able to watch him play along with the tabs etc. As was pointed out in this video it's fascinating how precise he targets chord tones and uses arpeggios in a way that sounds just fluid and beautiful. Did someone by any chance give special thought to the first fast run after the bends on the 12th fret, where he goes into this chromatic stuff? It's over nothing but a C chord. How did he come up with this run? It seems to be on the D minor blues scale? It sounds awesome, but I have no clue what informed that choice. Anyone? :-)

one of my all time fave GG tracks. question to the JTC guys, at the filming when this was improvised, how much of a listen had Guthrie had to the backing track beforehand? the note choices are so on the money.
@JTCGuitar
@JTCGuitar 4 жыл бұрын
So with this one, he had been sent the tracks in advance but, as is common with the man, only listened to them on the journey to the session! He then improvised a couple of takes but again, as is often the case, this was the first take. He basically created a chord chart on a piece of paper in front of him and let rip!

faux slides seem very much like pedal tones (pedal steel guitar), which Jeff Beck, and then later on Eric Johnson would incorporate into their playing. I think all these players, including Guthrie, are amazing and have their own 'voice'. Knowledge of the fretboard, modes, scales etc... now that seems to be where the hours and hours of practise and theory come into it!

None of this analysis matters. Guthrie plays beyond the music theory limits. Stop thinking that musicians like him always do minor this, major that, etc. They have learnt to speak their expression through the instrument. Unless you are able to understand and speak through your instruments, no amount of music theory or analysis will make you that good.

The way it works with Guthrie tends to be that he'll have a quick listen on the way to the studio, say on the train, and then have a quick look at the progression, but not always. Then he does a few takes. 9/10 the first one is the favourite. This was a first take effort I believe!

Every Guthrie Govan tab i have gotten from these guys has been wrong to some degree... they need to get a new transcriber.
@JTCGuitar
@JTCGuitar 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Bob, I think a lot of people misunderstand what to expect from Guthrie tabs. We recently released the tabs/backings for the Aristocrats and this is what he had to say about Adrian (who is our main transcriber). I'm aware the following is specific to the album, but Guthrie and Adrian have worked together for years and Guthrie simply wouldn't let us put his work out if it was constantly wrong. Hope you enjoyed the video either way, and here is what Guthrie has to say! Cheers, Dan. "Having worked as a transcriber for various guitar publications over the years, I’m fully aware of the hurdles which Adrian must have encountered whilst “decoding” certain parts of the guitar content in these tracks! The band’s original goal when creating “You Know What…?” was of course simply to create a new Aristocrats album, as opposed to an educational product per se, so there are at least a couple of unapologetically “chaotic” soloing moments lurking in there which must have been virtually impossible to transcribe - and they would surely be just as difficult to memorise and replicate accurately. (I certainly wouldn’t fancy such a task if presented with JTC’s meticulous sheet music version of the rubato ending from “D Grade Fuck Movie Jam”, or the frenzied glissando lick towards the end of the clean solo in“Spanish Eddie”!) In general, I would say that the “song” parts of each track in this package were very deliberately composed and would perhaps warrant some relatively detailed study. The “solo” sections, on the other hand, were all improvised and consequently they feature the occasional stream-of-consciousness passage where I was just “going for it” - hoping to convey a kind of explosive energy rather than any specific melodic content. This being the case, I think the way to get the most out of these transcriptions is to use your discretion when tackling the solo sections: it’s probably wisest to focus on learning your favourite licks note-for-note and then trying to look for any useful patterns in terms of note choices which seem to work particularly well over each chord, rather than feeling duty-bound to replicate every minute detail of the original! In other words: some of these notes probably deserve more of your time than others ;-) The Aristocrats are actually out on the road as I type this and after playing this material at more than 50 shows - and counting! - I’ve intentionally never played exactly the same thing twice in any of those solo sections, even though the general spirit will typically remain roughly the same from one night to the next. I find that this less rigid approach to the soloing duties in this material feels creatively liberating and keeps the songs feeling fresh so… well, I just hoped that some of you might feel the same way!"
