I live in Fullerton California, their hometown, and graduated HS in 1996, and I have seen them play well over 100 times from 1994-2010, even the terrible shows when Mark was loaded, sick, or burned up his voice 1-2 songs into the set were amazing. But the first time i saw them play was at the Ice House in Fullerton, 1994. They were headlining with some weird hip hop reggae fusion band of white boys with a huge skinhead following from Long Beach, and their opener was a cute little new wave-ish ska band from Anaheim that had a brother/sister duo on vocals and keyboard. The sister was hot though and my age. I only listened to skate punk at the time, so didn't pay too close attention the Long Beach and Anaheim bands, they were okay, but there is absolutely no doubt that Guttermouth was fucking sublime that night. The Long Beach band was Sublime too, and the sibling new waver rudies? The brother/keyboardist would leave the band after that and little sis would take over vocals. No Doubt that you can guess who that band was... LMAO 😉. Only time I saw those two bands live, front of the stage in a 300 occupancy club, and I was too young and uninformed to realize what I was witnessing. God Gwen was fucking cute though.

Jack and Frank, I realized something... God we are getting fucking old! Kids ask me about what the third wave scene in the 90s was like just like I used to bug Jack Grisham and Gabby Gaborno to tell me what early 80s shows at the Cuckoo's Nest, the Starwood, and Fender's Ballroom were like. And you are right Jack, the shows were perfect then. Kids from the first, overly violent yet cartoonishly artistic early 80s punk scenes started bands in 85-89 and by the time the scene started coming back to life and we started going to shows, those kids had become Pennywise, the Offspring, Guttermouth, Vandals, Lagwagon, NOFX, No Use, Strung out, Tilt, Rancid, etc, etc... They had dialed everything in perfect by mixing the physicality of skate and surf culture, the violent bliss of TSOL, Misfits, and Suicidal Tendencies shows, and the intelligent and female inclusive melodic hardcore scene created by Bad Religion and their rhythm guitar player and Epitaph Records owner Brett Gurewitz, who basically built a kingdom and then handed the keys over to some wonderfully talented kids like Brian Holland, Tim Armstrong, Fat Mike, Mark Adkins, and Jim and Fletcher from PW. They blew the thing up. And we got to witness it and, in my case anyway, enjoy an abundance of very high quality drugs, get into some awesome fist fights, fuck some of the most beautiful punk rocker chicks of any scene ever, and skate when it was something rebellious and collect tattoos when it was told to us, "You are gonna regret that when you get older and can't find a job that is willing to give you a chance..." It was beautiful chaos, I still have the tee shirts, and the scars, she still has the restraining order, and i still don't regret those tattoos. Keep on carrying the torch fellas.

I use to see them play as Republic back around 83’-84’ish in backyard parties in The Southeast of Los Angeles or Northwest of Orange County. La Habra/Whittier area. Then Eugene’s in Pico Rivera as Guttermouth. Been a fan for quite some time now but haven’t listen to anything since Covered With Ants album around 2000’…. Tried to listen to something after that but it didn’t hook me like the older stuff. Not knocking their later stuff, I just didn’t really give it a chance.
