A famous coach once said that game day is his day off. Makes perfect sense.

Jeremy, Thanks for posting this as it really rings close to home. My 10 year old was getting yelled at so much on the ice during games (the whole team) that he literally didn't know if he was coming or going. If you did not listen, you were benched and yelled at very loudly in front of your peers. Let the fkin kids play their game!!!

This is my coach in a nutshell. I will be skating down the ice I have a thought, the coach has a different one, he yells. In stuck wondering what to do and its a broken play. Let the players make the playing decisions, coaches can have the technical decisions.

Couldn't agree with this guy more. If you're not ready when the puck drops you're already to late.

You mention Gretzky, he had a pond behind his house and played hockey every day. We have a kid whos 13 and his grandfather runs the zamboni room, hes on the ice everyday and hes very good, hes playing hockey with 15 16 year olds and will probably be on the JV high school team next year. Practice makes perfect in everything we do.

People in the stands will always be yelling all kinds of stuff. It's the player's responsibility to be able to block that out.

100% agree. let the players play, there's a reason players are better than others. if u wanna direct every play, go on the ice and get in a men's league.

I remember the worst coach I ever had, who taught me nothing, yelling at me to hustle when I was chasing a player who was on a breakaway. I remember thinking "what does it look like I'm doing?" I stopped, skated to the door, got off the ice and never came back.

I agree with this. If you feel compelled to yell so often from the bench during a game because players are out of position or making bad plays, then maybe you haven't done your job as a coach during practices when those things should be corrected.

how to hockey. I've owned mx3 skates and they started to fold or having a growing bend just under the ankle area, and it was growing and growing. so I got new s180 supremes, and I've done about 20 ish hours on them and heat molded and I believe it is starting again it is hard to tell because differance are minimum but then I put my weight forward in my skate the area dosnt appear to be forming a fold or bend. Idk what I'm doing or what's going on but I've spent so much money to try and avoid this probs I use an 8D skate and it is the perfect size because 7.5 is to smal so I know it's not skate size. is it how I skate? is it how I tie them up I've trying researching this but there's nothing I can find and my pro shop don't know anything about it. They just say if it happens it happens but paying so much for skates I wouldn't thin it would happen. Cause you give some tips to avoid this problem or why it's happening because I don't want to have to buy another pair of skates. The skates are so so stiff so I honestly don't know what to do. Thankyou (I play hockey and freestyle skate. And I do skate very aggressively. hard angles and explosively)

I coach lacrosse and was putting an offense in for our team. What I want to do is get our players to run certain sets and certain motions - so they know how they are supposed to move with and without the ball and so they know where their teammates are supposed to be and where their options are to pass the ball. I was running through different options off of the same motion from one of the sets we were running. One of my players said to me, "Coach, you've got to give these plays numbers so you can call them so we know what to do." I stopped practice and got all my players' attention and told them, "No, YOU need to know what to do. You need to see what's happening, what the defense is doing and where your teammates are. By time I see what the defense is doing, call in the play, you hear it and start to run it, it's too late, because the defense will have changed and recovered by then. YOU just need to SEE it and Do it."

Yes, I agree also. Telling them what to do is for practice, let em play the game an learn from there mistakes.

What's even worse is when parents yell at their kids, especially if they are telling them to do something different than what the coach wants them to do.

Im a player and i do the yelling but i yell as a leader not as a boss. Example: "We need to get our shit together and start playing hard"

Only time I personally yell from the bench is I’ll yell feet when the pucks in their feet, man on when they have pressure coming behind them and I will yell one high if a d man pinches and a forward isn’t covering for him. I hated the coaches who yelled a play by play all game especially when they always seemed to be yelling a half second late and would act like they always had the perfect play after the puck has already been moved. My voice projects quite well so that is why I like to yell those few things so I know they at least have a heads up of what situation they are in.

I am Brazilian and I think that yelling works because o soccer. If the coach yells just to pass some information it's ok but if he yells to tell what the players got to do he is wrong

Coaching is about preparing your team for a season, and for games. This is done in practices and meetings. If you did your job right they will know what to do when the puck drops. If you find yourself yelling better review your own coaching strategy, techniques, drills and plays and improve them as your coaching skills are not quite there yet. A game is a time to watch, praise players and enjoy the results of your work.
