@@samstapes7471 Exactly. Although mammalian standards are largely irrelevant when dealing with marsupials, a joey moves from the womb to the pouch when it is still the "equivalent" of an embryo. Quite how evolution led to marsupial reproduction is even more complicated to understand than the evolution of mammalian reproduction. I gave up on the mammalian version and bravely decided to only look at the most basic notions for marsupials... ...which was, ultimately, as useful as a lace teacup.
@samstapes7471
@samstapes7471 2 жыл бұрын
@@towmlvb3423 it's cause the pouch is "equivalent" to the placenta. Think of it like this, antelope & zeebras are precocial cause it's benefited their species survival seconds after birth whereas kangaroos & other marsupial have had relatively less opposition when it comes to danger add in the fact that they live in harsh conditions with kangaroos bouncing everywhere. these factors lead to miscarriages & the altricial young could be "born" quicker + the pouch provides all collustrum/nutrients needed. hence why they're only found in Australia.

It is really scary how in these days people really get this distorted and unreal viewing about nature, trying to anthropomorphize animals... No wonder that some consider to kill an animal a "murder". Do you know that rodents EAT their own newborns in their own burrows if they feel threatened? They do this in order to recover all the energy they lost in the birth process. Do you know that younger lions devour the offsprings of previous older lions in order to take posession of the female? Love all the comments being all "lol he should have waited 15, 25, 95 minutes for mom to come back!" You only think that because your parents didn't want you bringing lost animals home. The mom _might_ have come back but the baby likely would have died of exposure first. Kangaroos breed fast and they are willing to spend their kids to survive because it is better the mom who can have many children survive than the baby who can't live on it's own. If what he did was really bad the animal shelter would have told him, we don't need a bunch of half educated people in the comments smack talking someone moved to do something.

MarvAlice YES SOMEONE SAID IT 👏🏼👏🏼 He did the best thing anyone could do; he might’ve scared the mom into dropping the baby, but if he never picked it up it would’ve died from the cold or predators. People are saying t he kangaroos come back, some are saying that they don’t. I’m glad he didn’t take that 50/50 risk and took him to a sanctuary that could 100% save him

Lets remember this 1. there no guarantee as to when or if the mom would have found her little joey. 2. There's no telling if he would still be alive. 3. It's the Australian outback... dozens of predators that would have no qualms with eating a defenseless Joey. All things considered, he did the right thing for those set of circumstances.

There actually aren't a lot of big predators in the Australian outback. Dingos would be the top candidate, along with especially large goannas. Feral pigs, if they're in the area, might also take the opportunity. In more humid climes, you might get large snakes too, but they tend to inhabit the coastal rainforests rather than the bushlands the video was showing. Overall though, I agree. The guy did the best he could given the circumstances. There's a very low chance that the mother would have come back for her joey, since kangaroos have alternating pregnancies. There was a good chance there's actually a second, newborn joey in her pouch, and the mother's reaction would have been "Eh, I've still got #2 spare." and kept on hopping. That means that the fallen joey's chances would have been extremely slim, especially from exposure. (Like most deserts, Australia can get blisteringly hot during the day and freezing cold at night. Alone, the joey would not have survived more than a day.)

He was neither directly endangering them nor was he on their tail. He was on a road meters to their left, on the opposite side of a fence. They could have changed paths at any moment but they stayed on a direct path along the fence, my guess is it was their migration route, nothing could have changed that. Even if he had slowed down while they kept running, he would have ran up on them eventually down the road. There's no way to prevent an animal from changing its mind and take a different path other than the one they want to take. At least in this encounter he actually saw the baby drop rather than miss it as they burst into a sprint if they had been in a different outcome.

OR.. he could have tried to catch up with the mother or the group and left it with them; but yeah i mean that's not right he traumatized both the mother and child.
