GVM Affordable High CRI LED Video Light Panels.
While I find the build quality, overall output, and Color Rendering excellent at this price point, there are a few 'quirks' one should know about the GVM 520 and GVM 672 LED Light panels. I've mentioned a few of them through my video review, but the stand out 'quirk' for me would be the lack of a battery meter advising you about how much time you have left. I feel this is one of the most important features any battery operated light should have (even if it's just an approximation). The last thing you want to worry about is having a light suddenly power off in the middle of an interview.
Second, it's nice that they offer built in wireless to control other GVM lights, it is limiting. Every light will have the exact same brightness and color temp setting. I see these lights being used on location as a small 3 piece kit, in which a majority of the time each light will have different brightness settings. If they were to introduce a handheld remote, then I feel the wireless controls would be much more appealing.
For 520 and 672 LEDs in a small panel, these will work best for talking head shots or maybe when working with products. They are probably not best suited for lighting large spaces. Overall I think the light offers excellent color reproduction for it's price. The phrase 'Bang for the buck' comes to mind when working with these lights.

I did a review on these a while ago. They are really solid lights. I was so impressed by how good they were, that I actually ended up keeping the review model and it is now in my studio. They are not the most transportable for run and gun, but if you are looking for something for you studio or something to hang on a warped wall, these are pretty good for the money. Great review!

I picked up the GVM-520S 3 light kit from Amazon. One of the lights did not work upon arrival and I could not get a replacement fast enough in time to load up for a shoot. Replacement is on its way out of my pocket. I recommend giving yourself time to test and resolve any issues if you consider this kit.

I think it's just smart to test any piece of equipment long before a shoot. I had issues with many pieces of gear through my years of shooting, even top name brand items. It is always best to plan ahead and test ahead of any big production that a client pays for.

Lots of lights on sale these days. I assume everyone is anticipating the release of some great lights at NAB in a few weeks or so. There are really alot of older style lights from second generation lines that are being sold off. I am hoping some killer moderately priced and decent light output lights are being released soon. Alot of the softer lights out there are just under powered as far as output. I just cannot see doing interviews where the lights are 1.5 meters or less from the person.

are you able to suggest a larger soft box that might be able to adapt to this light? at least 3-4' for instance? thanks and you sold me on these lights.

The problem of using an iPhone or Android app to control the light is that the app has to be updated as the OS changes to maintain compatibility. Does the company have the long-term commitment to do this? I don't know. It remains to be seen. GVM isn't one of the big names that have been here for years like Aputure. So whether or not it is going to be there years from now is not clear. I would rather have had a separate physical remote control that would forever maintain compatibility with the light. And as Mr. Cheesy said, the App doesn't allow you to control the light of individual lights - they are controlled as a group. This is a big disadvantage and flaw in the control app.

I'm concerned about what you touched on at the end. Can you set it so that there is no master light and the others don't act as a slave? And adjust them all manually?

"As far as CRI goes it looks really good, you're getting 95, 96, 97, 98" - what is this based on? Have you tested the CRI somehow or are you just going off've the manufacturer's claims. I'm curious because I have just bought one and I haven't tested it and I'm skeptical about any claims any manufacturer makes about these kinds of things. Thanks :)

Thanks for the review, Emm! GVM appears to be a new brand making interesting products. I recently bought their 31" motorized slider, and for the low cost I'm quite impressed with it. The remote control is a nice feature, but I agree that having a hand held remote, like the Aputure lights, would be convenient. Can you measure the lights in daylight mode at 3 feet? 3 feet is the minimum distance I would ever use lights at, and it is a common reference measurement distance.

Do you have any measurements for the output? or maybe some general settings? I recently purchased some similar lights that were rated to over 500 FC at 3 feet but when I actually measured them they only hit 150 fc at 3 ft without the diffusion, basically lights for Iso 800 and up.

1' is a very strange distance to test a light from. The standard is .5 metre and 1 metre.
@MrCheesyCam
@MrCheesyCam 6 жыл бұрын
The problem with specs out there is often they don’t tell you the distance something was measured. There really is no standard. And even when they do tell you, it’s not consistent with everyone. I’m just telling you my measurement, and even at 1.5 feet (.5 meter), readings won’t be too far off.

For a company to use MASTER/SLAVE in light setting is insanely ignorant and racist on so many levels ....the company could used other terms or key words instead of MASTER/SLAVE ??? Really ? Watch from 2:01 and how ignorant that really look and sound , smh

Look we get it. Companies (like Canon and Nikon) have also just recently updated their ‘terminology’. This video is over 2 years old. Time are changing and companies are changing too.
