Few features are as ingrained in the fabric of modern shooters as bullet time. Whether included as a mechanic that one can use at the press of a button, or an occurrence that only happens in scripted moments, bullet time is the punctuation mark of every game it graces; an awesome, yet functional tool that gamers and developers alike can’t get enough of. And it wouldn’t be nearly as popular as it is today were it not for Max Payne.
Released in 2001 by Remedy Entertainment, a video game developer based in Espoo, Finland, Max Payne put players in control of its titular protagonist on a slow-motion massacre through New York’s underground. It was dark, it was intense, and - most importantly - it was much more than just a series of reality-defying firefights, with its story spinning an intoxicating, noir-inspired yarn about Max’s descent into madness as he attempts to avenge his family’s death.
Players lapped it up in droves, leading the industry at large to try and integrate its mechanics into their own products, and Remedy to produce a follow-up: Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne. The latter offered an even slicker rendition of Max’s twisted world and mechanics, as well as an earnest attempt to try and portray a love story at a time when the medium, let alone shooters, rarely featured them. Unfortunately, while its reception was even more impressive, its sales struggled to pass muster, and for a period of time after its release, it seemed as if the series had nothing more to offer - barring a mediocre film adaptation starring Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis.
Yet like Max himself, its spirit refused to rest until it ended things on its own terms - and in 2012, Rockstar Games released Max Payne 3. Featuring a cruelly aged version of the series’ protagonist, and a setting more reminiscent of Man on Fire than The Big Sleep, the threequel offered long-time fans a rather different experience that what had come before it; one that thoroughly used the mechanics, systems, and characters Remedy had cultivated during the series’ heyday, but still felt distinctly Rockstar in its execution. Not all were pleased with this change in direction, and its sales, while better than its predecessor’s, underwhelmed once more. But even its most ardent critics agreed that as far as shooters went, it was still duly impressive.
Like any video game series no longer being worked on, Max Payne’s absence from the current realm of triple-A games is sad. But when one evaluates what the series managed to accomplish while it was alive, it’s hard not to be appreciative of how it went out.
This is the rise and fall of Max Payne.

Max Payne fell just right. While MP2 would have sufficed as an ending, MP3 was no failure. You expected his story to end miserably, in a hail of gunfire. Instead, he chooses life eventually. No more games are needed for this character. He's earned his rest. And he went out on a high note.

Max Payne 2 has by far the best script in my opinion. Max Payne 1 storytelling was special, revolutionary and badass but, looking at it today, even if it's still very good and unique, you can see that it has a classic videogame structure. While Max Payne 2, if it were a movie or a book, it would be amazing anyway and perfect as it is. Max Payne 2 is pure existential poetry. It's so complex, deep, full of metanarrative...everytime i play it feels like i'm learning something new about the story, the characters, the themes and the world where it takes place. Anyway i think both Max Payne 1 and 2 are masterpieces. If i have to convince someone that videogames can be art, i would show them Max Payne 1 and 2.

Not to understate the importance of his multiplayer. First being refuge for lots of red deads frustrated players after the modding could let u forget about actually playing on a console, - just to become refuge again for ppl like me, once gtao started to bore the shit out of me, even well b4 it turned into this unrescuable mess of today. N while the xbox360 community slowly started dying of,on ps3 it still is alive n kick... killing dodging n refusing to leave. After all that years. There even still r ppl starting it. That truely earned the title "evergreen". Edit: Lmao,i've just yet seen the guy saying that it's online community died of much quicker, than their other online modes?... I struggle not to pee myself - did he even played it or is he just repeating bullshit of journos who definitly were painting a narative back then, that should help getting gtao over. The time of that first drop pretty much fits in the time the other was released. N still it's here n prves why game journalism mainstream is on the way to the junkyard of irrelevancy just like film critics r. These two groups today must b decode with reverse psycology to get at least a chance of some useful info.

I just wanna say thank you for making & posting this video. I was 18 fresh out of high school when I saw an ad for this game coming out soon called Max Payne, it grabbed my attention and curiosity immediately. Luckily my curiosity was put to rest that Christmas, when a roommate of mine gifted me the game on PS2. And to be frank after the first 5 minutes I've been a huge fan of the series. In my personal opinion the story and the first game is in my top 10 favorite game story lines ever. To this day I'll go back and play the game through at least once a year. I just got such fond memories of that game and that time period in my life. Once again, just wanted to say what a great job you did on this documentary. I love this franchise to death. Easily holds up somewhere in my top 5 as a tie between all three. MP3 has a love-hate relationship with me; On one hand, it's got one of the most relentless, grittiest campaigns i've ever played and by far the most improved and weighty TPS gameplay ever, and in other ways the story had me longing for a proper chapter of Sam Lake's fascinating, bleak and goofy criminal underbelly to bring closure with the NYPD trigger-happy grief-stricken cop.

I feel much the same. Seen as a stand-alone game, it wasn't bad. But seen as a Max Payne game... It left me wanting more... More Max Payne... The old Max Payne, that is... This game neither felt, not played, as a Max Payne game. The cover mechanic hampered the flow of the game play (as it always does). I didn't like the changes to bullet-time... Max felt much slower and shoot-dodging while picking off a handful of thugs felt completely unsatisfying.

Sure! Max Payne 3 doesn't have the film noir it did in 1 and 2, but it has an grimy 2000 action drama film feel like "Training Day" "Man on Fire" "Street Kings" or "Waist Deep". and the mechanics are insanely well developed. MP3 is such an underrated game.
