Scindia's lost 3 generations of their family in the battle of Panipat. It was only Shrinath Maharaj Mahadji Shinde who survived but was very badly injured . It was Scindia's who finished off the traitors by wiping off the Rohilla's, it was Mahadji Shinde who fought and defeated the British twice. Dear Patil Ji, Scindia's betrayal is a fact of early 1858 and you are quoting the facts from aftermath of January 14, 1761 that is, the third battle of Panipat. What mahadji Scindia did in 1761 and later is a great epoch of Maratha history but it is no justification for betrayal of Indian sepoy rebels by his lineage 97 years later. When Jayajirao Scindia led his forces on June 1, 1858 against troops led by Tantia Tope and Rani Laxmibai and LOST, he started a phase of servility to foreign occupation of Indian motherland not earlier seen in house of Gwalior. As Lord Canning wrote a few days later, "if Scindia joins the rebels, I will have to pack my bags tomorrow." Because Scindia had 70000 strong British trained army armed with good rifles and very good six pounder mobile artillery. Therein lies the betrayal because the tax for all this armed might was being collected from Indian subjects by a ruler who was an Indian of a famous clan. In his defence it can be said that he was not alone in this shameful behaviour but still he didn't choose the best path.

I am currently reading a book named 'Operation Red Lotus' by Parag Tope ji (Descendant of revered Taatya Tope ji) which gives out more details on what the internal dynamics/agreements between the house of Scindia and Newalkars(Laxmibai) were. Would be happy to share more on it once am through and if you are a history buff and would really like to know more what transpired between them.
