HARDtalks's Stephen Sackur talks to Gwyneth Paltrow, Oscar winning actor, in Cannes in the South of France. A Hollywood A-lister who in recent years has focused much of her attention on building her lifestyle and consumer business, Goop. Her likes and dislikes are followed by millions, prompting aspiration in some, mockery in others. Why does Gwyneth Paltrow rouse such strong reaction? Recorded 29th June 2016

She really is lovely, and very very bright. Having watched 4 or 5 distinct snippets on You tube, I think I get what caused the beak between her n Brad. Over here ( UK) we 'd call it a mix of " class" n intelligence. The engagement made her see that ,simoly, she had em, he didnt. Idguess that some of that great down she had After the break was largely guilt.. A guilt that nearly lost her and us, her brilliant Viola/ juliet.in the Wonderful " Shakespeare in Love". Bless you, Gwyneth, dont leave us just yet. MalcolmW.

Ps the ultimate evidence of my "class " theory..the younger Gwynnie s delight at the tale of seeing Johnny Depp rolling a tab. It goes with the big thing inthe cheaper rags afew years back , of the young upper crust discovering beer etc an finding life more "real" down among the plebs. Ioffer as a theory, no more. MW

17:00 she is unfortunately lying, Gwyneth's first credit is in 1989 it was the TV film "High" it was written/produced and directed by her father Bruce Paltrow. 2nd credit was with her Mother Blythe Danner at Williamstown Theatre on stage. Her 3rd credit was Hook, her Godfather is Director Steven Spielberg and he called her up personally and offered the role to her she didn't have to audition for it. Gwyneth's 4th credit in the industry is the movie "Cruel Doubt" also starring with her mother Blythe Danner.. Then she began breaking out on her own in completely unknown films 1993 "Deadly Relations" and 1994 "Flesh and Bone" then in 1995 Gwyneth starred in 7even with Brad Pitt and her career and private life took off. She was never really on her own.. She has had help from her family "network" and she has done well.

Interesting. I wanted the interviewer to follow up by asking her how she supported herself after college as I was curious how she survived if she didn't have any parental support. But now we know.

She is successful, talented, intelligent, beautiful and confident. So here comes the haters. Stephen Sackur on the other hand, sucks. Doesn't write the questions, do the research or even dress himself. He is far from Gwyneth's equal even though he thinks he is.

I have always loved Gywneth. As for the equal pay debate: It's a real issue, but the examples often cited are not appropriate. Case in point: The Charlize Theron case here is in regard to the sequel "Snow White and the Huntsman." In that film, Charlize is in a total running time of about ten minutes, while the film's title and focus is on the Huntsman, played by Hemsworth. In this film, Charlize was not the lead, the focus, nor did she have near the same screen time. So it's not equal work. Use a different example.

I do believe she worked pretty hard. The resentment people have probably also comes from the exposure she had to people in high places. Her Godfather is Steven Spielberg.

Goob isn't a story, it was a fluff piece, a corporate advertisment plain and simple.

I never heard of Goop. Typical aspirational and selling to fans. I’ve never been fascinated by actors. I occasionally enjoy a movie but don’t worship entertainers. I have my own life. Lots of sex toys….

I was waiting for him to press her on all the pseudoscience claims about her 'wellness' products, but it never even came up at all. Being hardtalk I thought they'd have gone there.

It's easy for people to say they want to see successful, talented women go far. But when it actually happens, both men AND women don't seem to like it so much.

I do admire what Goop sets out to do and Gwyneth's business savvy. But she seems to have some trouble defending the crazy expensive and luxury prices for the majority of Goop's products.
