Fascinating composer! He would of course be annoyed that, like many, I was introduced to his music by Kubrick's 2001. But his musical palette is so much broader than those works, and I've since acquired a number of his recordings, all of which I enjoy a great deal. Intriguing to hear how varied are his tastes. He actually made the effort to seek out Harry Parch! Intelligent man and charming as well.

it occurs to me he misunderstood his own earlier chromatic period. he says he 'believed' in chromaticism - yet chromaticism is not a religion, only a method. If he had understood that, he might not have felt the need to withdraw from it. microchromaticism (quatertones, sixthtones) is not boring per se. only composers are boring, or audiences are bored.
