The landmine example is a little different, but re racking your weights is really important imo. Particularly in commercial gyms, you shouldn’t even leave one plate on the machine. If someone is new, it could be super hard for them to even lift that plate off and they may want to just practice with no weight. Your last set isn’t done until the weights are back on the rack.

It’s really frustrating! Not everyone lifts heavy! I’ve had to take off 12 45s off the leg press before! And that alone is a workout for me and a total vibe kill! If you add the weight, take it off! It’s like going to someone’s house and not picking up after yourself!

@Elizabeth Dorton agree!! One time at my (very very small) gym there was a particular gym bro that took his sweet time doing a hundred million sets of deadlifts with like 315 lb. He knew I was clearly waiting for a rack and when he was done he kept the bar on the ground in front of the rack with all that weight and went on to another machine. I locked eyes with him from across the room and said so are you done?? He goes “oh sorry yeah I forgot” 😂😤

Really good points and I completely agree with you! I also don’t think it’s OK to claim multiple pieces of equipment/machines at one time. There’s a girl at my gym who was using a squat rack for back squats and supersetting with the leg press. Another girl went to use the leg press thinking it was open, and she ran over from the squat rack and said “oh no I’m using this machine!” Idk to me that’s kinda rude… especially when the gym is busy.

Same! Especially during the pandemic when ideally we'd be cleaning the equipment between users, making "working in" less acceptable. That's why I personally hate programmed supersets that utilize more than one machine. I get it when it's dumbbells and a machine, then I'm not wasting anyone else's time or equipment - I'm just doing something during my rest periods. But definitely not multiple machines/racks.

I wish we didn't live in a time where people felt the need to video absolutely everything. Like I get taking video to maybe watch your own form or if it's something really monumental in your growth, but I'm so tired of everywhere turning into a film studio. It used to be if you wanted to film, >you< were the imposition and had to find a time no one else was around or book out your own space. Now every public space is open game and if you're using it as designed, you shouldn't be needing to worry about phone setups and people getting their shot. You shouldn't have to worry about being filmed by somebody even accidentally. But we threw that out the window and I think we're worse off for it.

You're in a public space. Unless the owners of the public space have put out a notice that filming is not allowed (for example: a museum), then anyone is allowed to film what or who they want. They don't need your consent if you happen to be in the same place and are not a prominent figure in the video. This is a two way street, my friend. You don't have to cater to them and their filming, just like they don't have to cater to you and your desire to not be accidentally filmed. That being said, I know from a powerlifting perspective that I film all my big three sets for both my coach to watch and critique and as a sort of visual journal and log for progress. I also do the same in an actual journal. There are legitimate reasons to be filming everything you do in the gym.

I went from an expensive fancy gym, to more of a local chain gym and it’s honestly been tough. At the more expensive gym EVERYONE helped to clean up afterwards, everything went back where it was supposed to. While I understand some people don’t realize that you’re not supposed to leave things racked, I’ve cleaned up rarely used equipment, had to unrack 500lb+ from the leg press left in the tall person safety (I’m 5’1”). That stuff, to me, isn’t excusable. Another huge pet peeve - someone walks right up to the dumb bell rack, picks up the ones they want, and just starts doing their sets standing right in front of all the dumb bells so no one else can get to them in that area. Why i don’t put my dumb bells back between sets - I might not be able to get to them because some dude (and it’s always a dude) has to stand 3 inches from the rack to do his shrugs.

For me, it all comes down to being considerate for others, so in most of these situations, I'm on the side of the person who isn't treating the gym like their own personal space. Not reracking weights? The person after you might not be able to lift what you were lifting, so get those plates put back. It's also just generally polite to clean up after yourself and if they're not putting weights away, you can bet they're not wiping down their bench etc either. A bar left on the pegs on a squat rack? Putting that away is a waste of both your time and the next person's. Squat racks aren't just for squats, so as long as someone is doing a barbell lift, I don't mind - it's not just squats that you need pegs for. Even curls can be justified if you're doing them heavy enough. Don't be taking dumbbells in there though... People walking in your line of sight or in your camera shot? It's a public gym, get a membership at a more exclusive gym or go at less busy times. Grunting? Some grunting is fine, but if you're doing it for literally every rep of every lift, you're probably doing it for attention, not because of genuine exertion.

In many situations, it's always a matter of courtesy to other users and mostly some good manners plus common sense. One rule that should always be observed is wiping down for the next user...especially if you sweat profusely. Nobody wants to swim in your bodily fluids!

Not just with video but with pictures too! My gyms lockers/restroom have a mirror that's in the way of the restroom entrance (this is a really weird layout now that I think about it lol) I usually only use the restroom if I absolutely have to so I was rushing in and someone got mad because I got in their picture and she was taking a while because she continued trying to get her shot even way after I was done washing my hands and even freshened up a bit and finally left. I'm usually good at avoiding people but that was the only entrance so what was I supposed to do 🤷‍♀

I agree with all of these! The only thing that really bothers me are the people that leave heavy/many plates left racked. The gym I go to there are people of all levels in there and you never know who is going to use the machine after you. Last week the leg press had 12. TWELVE plates left on it. There was no way I was putting away 8 plates before my workout, that's insane. Or leaving a bar racked super high on the squat rack but I guess that is maybe only a short person problem I encounter lol.

I really felt the putting weights away one. A few years ago I went into a gym and at some point used a leg press machine. It was the only station with 100's (mostly on the floor) and had one plate on either side before I even used it. It seemed like for spacing that it made sense to leave it like that, so I did after I finished my sets. Some dude who was in the gym before I arrived suddenly got super mad and started screaming at me and demanding I put it back the way I found it. I did. Really bizarre to me for someone to get so heated that you have to worry about them coming at you for something so light. Can't say I disagree with the opinions in the vid though. To add one myself, I don't see the big deal with people using their phones in between sets for whatever; it seems like others expect you to be actively lifting the entire time you're in a single spot, maybe with only a few seconds of break max.

Not sure if this is how most gyms are set up but at the commercial gym I go to the only set of mirrors is behind the dumbbells which are in front of the benches. If I need to use a mirror but don't need a bench I need to squeeze in somewhere awkward or just not use a mirror. Then If I need a weight but don't walk quick enough to get it, I could be in someone's way who is using the mirror. This next thing made me laugh. They posted on FB how you are "not" to take selfies in the locker room. Then a week later they had a pic of a selfie of someone "in" the locker room.

I was doing bench press and someone started jumping rope right in front/alongside of me.. there wasn’t an efficient amount of room to be jumping rope between me and the dumbbell rack in front of me.. another thing I’ve had an issue with was when I was set up for deadlifts and a guy started doing push-ups to my left less than 6 inches away from my bar. To your point.. perhaps things like this are a sign that I just need to join a different/more focused gym rather than the chain gyms nearby.

One time I was in a college gym squatting, and someone asked if they could do pullups on the overhead bar directly behind me. I politely said no, since I was using the squat rack and also felt uncomfortable with a man standing behind me while I squatted. He started yelling at me and began asking an employee to see the manager. Then proceeded to yell at the manager, yell at me until I started to cry, and demand he be able to use the upper bar of the squat cage behind me. I don't care what someone is doing, you never have the right to scream at someone. It's not that hard to politely say something.

Men are entitled always but especially so at the gym since it’s usually a male dominated space. I’m always tense at my gym, even if it’s empty except for me and one man. Saving up for a more expensive membership that offers a womens only sections. Sucks but doesn’t seem like there’s any other option for me right now. And men don’t give a fuck if women are uncomfortable in their presence, and choose to ignore non-verbal communication. That’s my spicy opinion I guess.

@@cgohoh "Men are always entitled, but especially so at the gym." Really? Dude, grow up. As with BOTH sexes, some people within that group are entitled, and others are not. That's a bold claim to accuse ALL men of being entitled because that is just not true. Sorry you feel uncomfortable at the gym when even just one male is in there with you, but if he's minding his own business then that's literally not his fault. What do you want him to do, magically turn into a woman? Do you want him to leave the gym that he pays for too just so you can be comfortable? And non-verbal communication is not always picked up by everyone. Try to being an adult and communicating by using your words instead of being passive-aggressive because I'm pretty sure that's what you really mean by "non-verbal." Sounds like you are the entitled one.

It is really frustrating when people use the platforms to do abs(despite the signs saying please don't do that) or do pullups on the squat rack. It is a climbing gym...the number of places set up for pull ups is SO SO HIGH and you can do floor ab work outs literally anywhere. It is so frustrating as someone who has to commute to the gym and work full time to not be able to get my workouts in because of things like that. But not putting Dumbells back or unracking bench is annoying because u can't always tell if the person is done. 2. Using squat rack for other workouts. I will if needed. I used for bench so I can use guards when I didn't have a spotter or a good spotter. I felt guilty but 🤷🏻‍♀️ gyms should invest in guards. I also use for OH Press if needed, Bent over rows or rack pulls. 3. Walking in front of people. Im always seeing people curling right in front of dumbbells and have the nerve go have an attitude when u walk by them to get Dumbbells just because they can't gear you say "excuse me" with their earbuds on 4. Walking in front of phone, not my issue if I don't see it. But if I see it, I'll try and go around 5. Grunting. If you want to get mad at grunters, go to planet fitness where doing heavy weights is against the rules lol

I get it if it's for storage purposes in certain environments but I don't agree with leaving 80kg on a deadlift platform and expecting someone else to take that off ..it's time, effort and wasted energy they could have put into their workout... Just so so frustrating. I agree with all the other statements though, especially the filming one!!

We have one squat rack and one power rack in my gym. Friday I was able to grab the power rack since the squat rack was taken and I set up to do some box squats. There were two girls side by side on the floor between my power rack and the smith machine next to me in about 5 feet wide of space from rack to smith. I was stepping back with my bar and she started to stand. I said “whoa, careful” we would have collided (my bar and her head) if I hadn’t seen her coming up. There really isn’t enough room between the machines except to load the bar. It’s frustrating because the gym is small.
