Loosely based on the memoirs of world-renowned striptease artist Gypsy Rose Lee, Gypsy follows the journey of the irrepressible Rose (Imelda Staunton, Vera Drake), the mother to end all stage mothers, as she balances the challenges of parenthood with the joys and heartbreaks of a life in the world of show business.

She is such a consumate Sondheim performer--she makes sure to act the part instead of just singing or performing it. Fabulous!

All those comparing her to Midler, Lupone and Merman are completely wrong to do so. She takes a completely different approach to mamma Rose. Something more manipulative and subtle.

Don't you get tired of X is better than Y! isn't the joy of performance that each talented Artist brings there own style to a role... I loved her performance - is it the the best - who am I to judge... it was just brilliant!!

Her attempt at an American accent is way better than Patti LuPone’s attempt at an English accent. (I love Patti, honestly, but her accent in Sweeney Todd is - not great. Her belting is fantastic though, as always!)

Why is it in these recordings it sounds as if they've cut the guts out of the orchestra?
@peteradaniel
@peteradaniel 4 жыл бұрын
Because it’s a live stage performance from the West end and they don’t spend as much in orchestras in the UK. West end theatre ticket prices are pretty much half that of broadway so they don’t have anywhere near as much to spend on musicians. I should know, I am one sadly.

Some people can get a thrill knitting sweaters and sitting still. That's okay for some people who don't know they're alive. Some people can thrive and bloom living life in the living room. That's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try when I think of all the sights that I gotta see and all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at. Come on, papa, what do you say? Some people can be content playing bingo and paying rent. That's peachy for some people, for some hum-drum people to be, but some people ain't me! I had a dream, a wonderful dream, papa, all about June in the Orpheum circuit. Gimme a chance and I know I can work it. I had a dream. Just as real as can be, papa. There I was in Mr. Orpheum's office and he was saying to me, "Rose, get yourselves some new orchestrations, new routines and red velvet curtains. Get a feathered hat for the baby; photographs in front of the theatre. Get an agent and in jig time you'll be being booked in the big time." Oh, what a dream. A wonderful dream, papa. And all that I need is eighty-eight bucks, papa. That's what he said, papa. Only eighty-eight bucks. Papa You ain't gettin' eighty-eight cents from me, Rose. Rose Well, I'll get it someplace else! But I'll get it! And get my kids out! Goodbye to blueberry pie. Good riddance to all the socials I had to go to, all the lodges I had to play, all the shriners I said hello to. Hey, L.A., I'm comin' your way! Some people sit on their butts; got the dream, yeah, but not the guts. That's living for some people, for some hum-drum people I suppose. Well, they can stay and rot! But not Rose!

She sings it well, but she needs to work on the staging. Given her long and illustrious career, it's kind of surprising she doesn't have better blocking and stage movement. Makes me wonder who directed this performance.

@jonldn 4 жыл бұрын
@@swarzeoz2550 Whats funny is those people who bleat about "its an opinion" are the ones who hate it when someone else has one... debate is out of the question ....next step either some rational as to why we should bow to their opinion - or rudeness - normally both...

@swarzeoz2550 4 жыл бұрын
@@jonldn . I don't like her in this role. Period. Does that dooooooom me to oblivion in the world of public opinion? I even know the guy who produced it. So sue me. I was in the biz. I have an opinion. Anyone is welcome to disagree. It is a public forum. I don't want anyone to "bow down" to my opinion. I just think she was a bit manic in the role,, which is also why I didn't like her Follies. It is a matter of taste, and that is all there is to that.
@jonldn
@jonldn 4 жыл бұрын
swarze oz fine and as I said in my last reply you have entered into the “rational as to why “ you know the producer you are in the biz. So therefore you opinion has more gravitas than others! Don’t worry though you are one of the many on you tube who want to post a statement that they detest being challenged in anyway. I only trust you won’t want to move onto stage 3 which is usually rudeness
