MORE GYPSY JAZZ GUITAR LESSONS: bit.ly/TrueFire
Swedish guitar phenom Andreas Oberg has performed with and earned the accolades of such guitar luminaries as Les Paul, Toots Thielemans, Bireli Lagrene, Larry Coryell and Frank Vignola. Along with regular TV and radio appearances, Andreas is often featured in international guitar publications.
His partner in crime, Frank Vignola, is a recognized master of a wide range of styles from jazz to bluegrass. Illustrating this depth, Frank has worked with legends such as Donald Fagen, David Grisman and -- like Andreas -- Les Paul. A Long Island boy, Frank is far from being a jazz snob and has graced the stages of everyone from Madonna to Ringo Starr.
In Gypsy Duo, Frank and Andreas will teach you the many different techniques used within Gypsy jazz music such as picking, rhythmic patterns and harmonic ideas in a duet format. They also call upon their years of experience in jazz and bebop styles to infuse new ideas into the style, such as sweep picking, working from different tonal centers, new fingering approaches and fresh rhythmic ideas.

the scat singing is the same as the notes he's playing - it shows that he knows what he's playing, where he's going, he's choosing the notes and that it's not mindless shredding for the sake of it. Very impressive.

I am by no means a pro musician or guitar player, but I know that the singing is not supposed to sound like Celine Dion. What Andreas is doing is supposed to demonstrate that he KNOWS what he's playing i.e. he's so thorough with it, he can sing it. And it goes further, he's so thorough with the guitar that he can play what he's thinking immediately, there's no time lapse, just like you don't need time to form words with your mouth or to phrase sentences. He knows the fretboard as you know your throat. His fingers move to play as effortlessly as you move your mouth to speak. The most famous example of such skill is perhaps George Benson. What they play is what they sing and vice versa, because it doesn't matter what instrument they are using (throat or guitar), what you are hearing is their music, their individual sound. It takes years of practice and dedication to develop this level of intuitive playing, these guys are unmatched.

That's it man! Singing for high technical and experienced player is sometimes a way for them not to fall back on muscle memories as well (licks and ideas that you would normally fall back to since your fingers so used to it).

Well, everyone has the right to their own taste and distate. In today's culture it seems taboo to state that you dont like things. However, I would prefer it if Glenn Gould and Keith Jarret kept their noises to themselves and I find scat very cringy. That doesnt mean they are not huge musicians or anything like that, its just a preference.

Andreas definitely one of the top ten guitarists of all time..and he is still so young! He plays beyond constrained, constipated music..ala Wes, George Benson, Howard Roberts, Barney Kessell, Eddie Van Halen, Hendrix, Johnny smith, etc..not all jazz, but same attributes..oh..the Beetles.. I am learning so much by watching Andreas to apply in my soloing..big improvements in just a few days..need to find some unconstrained folks to play with.. Thank You Mr Oberg for being an accessible genius

If I may, it wasn't meant as a scatting solo. It's a technique that helps you solo better. He was doing it because when you're creating lines, singing what you're playing makes connecting your musical thoughts to your hand movements a lot easier.

For all of you complaining about the scatting, try improvising in a lyrical manner with and without scatting. If you can get your vocals in tune and time with your instrument of your choice, your melodies will be so much richer. Get used to it!

Vignola somehow seems to get other guitarists to play standards that manage to become fresh and new. He reminds me of the 1950s early rock and roll guitarists that were somewhere in a transition between jazz and something beyond: Frank seems to have an insatiable appetite for creating refershingly novel and unfamiliar combinations of established styles and influences.

@odingr that's why you came up with the two major rules. I told the second one once to a friend, when talking about a song I just had figured out. It had some kind of very simple solo (was a 4 chord pop song, by the way), and when hearing it for the fourth time or so, I just went into the room singin' it note by note telling him "now I'll be able to play it" If you can't hear it, you can't play it. Thanks again stranger. Keep hearin!
