Today we will tackle the chords for Django's fantastic "Douce Ambiance". This progression is full of really useful chord runs, inversions and walking bass lines.. all essential elements for that authentic pre-bop swing sound.
One thing I forgot to mention is that in the lesson materials I’ve included a transcription of the melody, plus Django’s fantastic 2 chorus solo (that we’ll look at in detail in the next lesson). I’d always recommend learning the basic melody so that you can play the “head” of the tune effectively.
I would highly recommend downloading the lesson materials provided at the link above.. all of the topics covered in this lesson are typed up nice and neat and provided in both guitar pro and PDF formats. Having these to hand whilst following along with the video will certainly make things much easier to absorb.

This is soooo good! Love the bass movement and the enharmonic triads (is that the right term for Cm6 = Am7b5 and Gm6 inverted triad with the third in the bass = Bb6?). Learning music theory while learning a piece of music is so much more fun than just learning music theory in the abstract. You really took this time with this lessn, Alex and it is as comprehensive as it is enjoyable. Thanks!

Thank you Eric! I really appreciate the comment. Yes indeed, you used the right term for sure! This is the interesting thing with 3 note voicings.. they can be used to pose as so many different chords 👌🏻

I must stop looking all your vids, and focus on the one I wanna work… I must, but I can’t 😂 Maybe I’m more KZfaq than guitar ? 🤨 Thanks anyway Alex, love your work and playing 🙏

Hi Alex, I just wanted to let you know, that your sophisticated and incredibly nuanced lessons make a huge difference in your viewer's learning! I'm a professional violinist, always loved listening and playing Grappelli, picked up guitar during covid and have been trying to get as close as possible to Django's playing ever since. Over the last 3 years of learning guitar I've always been on the lookout for gypsy jazz guitar lessons, and picked up a lot from Sven Jungbeck, but the way you are presenting information has been an absolute game (learn) changer for me. Your lessons' structure of building up each piece as a case study from shell voicing to final chords, solos and everything in between is the golden way to help the learner build connection of thoughts for the future, rather than quick fixes, (there are so much quick fixes on KZfaq), to have someone doing deep dives instead is so incredibly valuable! And to have a teacher who can also present and play the styles with 100% authenticity? Absolutely fantastic, congratulations on all the mastery you have achieved on your instrument! So a thousand thank you again for your lessons Alex, they are very much appreciated out here! All the best, Gergely

Your tone is so full and rich! Could you maybe do a quick explanation on how you reach it? It’s full and warm with just a touch of grit or something on there. But I love it. Sounds great!

Great video Alex, you’ve obviously worked really hard on your channel, looks and sounds great with really informative teaching at a great pace. I remember working this tune out years ago when I used to play rhythm in one of the UK’s first Hot Club bands in the 80’s; The Kimbara Brothers with Neil Stacey on lead.

@@AlexFarranGuitar Thanks, those were the days! Not many Gypsy guitars around then, I had a CSL oval Holland Neil played a Yamaha APX (but he never was a purist). Not sure what he's up to these days, we lost touch a while ago, he's not on KZfaq anywhere as far as I can see.
