Colour.
Story of gypsy encampment and the problems that go with it. Interviews with gypsies and local residents including M.P. Dame Patricia Hornsby Smith. Shots of children amongst the rubbish. Good panning shots of the encampment and of a pile of broken up cars.
Local residents complain about the mess that the gypsies leave behind, the gypsies say that it is local residents that dump rubbish there.
The gypsies are seen having a bonfire, and standing around chatting. Dame Hornsby Smith and another local resident say that the gypsies have every right to be there, but that the way they live is detrimental to the area. Kent has always been a mecca for travellers especially as they have traditionally worked there in the hop picking season and as fruit pickers.
The gypsies complain that the local pubs won't serve them although there is supposed to be no discrimination in Britain.
Note: old records state that this was filmed in Bexley, but commentary says Bromley.

@Yusuf Clyde It's a scam site. Says it's hacked the account, then asks for payment before it'll give you the password. If you give payment details, you don't get the password and you personal and financial details are then used for online fraud.

Some things never change: wherever travellers go, robberies, burglaries, trouble and rubbish follow. Ask any local authority or police force - in private of course since they cant admit it publicly and they'll confirm it.

Majority of people dont know what gypsies are . We live of the land and people were living like those for hundreds of years before the ownership of lands. If the council see it as such a problem then they should make more effort to build sites even if they are owned by the council , gypsy lifestyle should not be compromised just because other people dont like it and it offends them. Straight up racism, split with my misses because she tried to challenge me on my gypsy heritage, it's the irish giving us lot the bad name

I rented a few mobile homes from romany families they have mobile home sites across UK and they were spotless sites.. There are bad eggs in all communities and a lot of the people living in caravans now aren't gypsies there townies. . Irish travellers are the biggest problem they tend to move around more leaving mess but English true gypsies are clean and tidy ..

Try this on. Weekly I walk from my village 3/4 mile and back to the next one picking up litter. I get a third of a 90litre bag. That’s rubbish thrown out of cars by gorgios (brick dwellers). Now you multiply that by the 1/4 million miles of road, not to mention footpaths, in this country and then complain about gipsies. What was it someone said “first cast out the beam out of thine own eye”?

There is quite a difference though between the domestic rubbish that can be fairly argued isn't collected from roadside sites, although it is no excuse for not taking it to the tip themselves once a week...and the piles of cars!! The scrap metal trade so often associated with the tinker end of travelling people is what people really object to having left on the roadside. Although it is rare now as everything has been clamped down on. Most of what we have on the road now seems to be Irish travelers, not the gypsies that were so common in my Norfolk childhood and a totally different class of people. We often had the children in our schools, and we all thought they were very exciting and glamorous!

The Irish traveller's are nomadic people of Ireland, the great famine of 1847 was the cause of most Irish people either emigrating or moving town to town looking for food and work. Most Irish traveller families will trace there origins to the west of Ireland where the famine was at is worst. 2 million died 2 million emigrated. It was genocide by the English as food was being exported from Ireland by the English who ruled Ireland at the time.

Leeds has provided temporary park ups with portaloos . There is a few permanent sites I know of. The country needs more. They have been here for centuries and provide labour and many other positives. They have gained ethnic minority status since this film was produced. I have been helped myself by Romany and Irish travellers . When at first homeless then living with New Age Travellers. Good people.

I worked with a few travellers in the Midlands a few years back as a tree surgeon. They tried to do a coke deal in a car park, they tried to rip off and con an oldman on one job, ran off with his cash and left logs unpicked up and also would look to steal stuff from people's gardens. I quit my job that day.

This was filmed almost 50 years ago! With all the free benefits given to non gypsies and immigrants in the UK, why hasn’t there been any building of what we call trailer parks here in the US? For a monthly fee they can park their homes and cars on an assigned space. It’s not a bad deal and the trailer or caravan park could be owned and operated by the local Gypsy council. They could have playgrounds and laundry centers. It could work well.

@@lauriesantiago9543 no not true at all it's in the bloodline. Romany gypsies usually have thick brown hair, short legs and broad shoulders. While the Irish gypsies usually have lighter hair ,skinnier and alot more mouthy. But yeah most people make the same mistake as you and quite frustrating because of the stigma and pure ignorance towards our people. I mean I kinda guess its partly our fault , we created a whole other language so that none gypsies (gorjas) couldn't understand us , very private people .

Kent is also "The Garden of England", but once the gypos (or pykees) finished trashing the land they decide to legal/illegally park on, that beautiful Kent countryside is ruined. Made me laugh that gypo man calling the commentator "Sir". Clearly he either wants his money or is trying to present as a respectful person. Next time you pass an illegal gypsy encampment, take a look at all the rubbish lying around and then ask yourself if they're 'respectful'!
