A quick intro to flick stick using JoyShockMapper to add good gyro controls and flick stick to DOOM (2016) on Windows.

I just beat Quake 2 with gyro+flick stick. Bro designed the most useful function for the right stick.

Using the gyro in the controller, I was able to fit all the functions of the gamepad in one hand and make the controller for gamers with disabilities

Unfortunately, Microsoft are holding the console space back on this front by STILL not including gyro in any of their controllers for three generations. The only thing they've ever improved or changed is ergonomics (and swapping two face buttons for shoulder buttons). They obviously thought the Xbox 360 controller was perfect in terms of functionality, and didn't bother to innovate after that. It's taken Nintendo (and to a lesser extent, but still significantly, Sony) to try new things. Unfortunately, with Microsoft on a mission to buy up half the industry, and Xbox inevitably becoming the lead platform, we'll see less and less incentive for developers to break away from Microsoft's "standard".

An interesting idea worth pursuing, particularly as an option for those not already initiated with first-person analog stick aiming. The biggest problem I can foresee is the use of gyro limiting the comfort of the player by forcing you to hold the controller in a certain direction...and likely unergonomic wrist tilting that could cause discomfort and/or repetitive strain.

This is an interesting idea. It reminds me of quick turning in Splatoon, but rather than using 2 inputs (left stick direction + button) you just use the right stick. I haven't tested it yet, but this may be the next step in gyro controls. Looks like you'll still need a disable gyro button though for games with a lot of recoil that doesn't reset once finished such as Roadhog's ultimate in Overwatch. I wonder if this is something that Steam could build into their controller config settings.

Thanks! The idea was inspired by Splatoon's quick turning, but changes a lot. I was surprised by what a difference it made to not have to press a button to trigger it. Overwatch is pretty good about having settings to automatically recover from recoil animations, but I haven't tried Roadhog with it. I'd love for games to implement this natively, because then things like recoil are up to the designers. But yeah, I agree, a "disable gyro" button is usually a good idea. In DOOM I have it mapped to the circle button. If you don't have buttons to spare, you can share it with another action (hold to disable gyro) or have the gyro disabled while using flick stick. It's not ideal, but still better than legacy controller aiming, I think! I'd love to see Steam add support for flick stick

Looks cool :) The worst thing about console gaming compared to keyboard and mouse gaming is the lack of fine control and quick aiming, in my opinion. I hope this can help do away with a lot of that!

Analog Stick aiming is not completely terrible. You can get good at it even without Aim Assist. But yeah, GYRO and this new Flick Stick seems way better.

@@stoopidhaters Yet neither gyro or flick stick is nearly as accurate as a mouse nor is it as natural feeling, not to mention game mechanics like strafejumping and bunnyhopping still aren't capable with it due to how the machine is reading the input from the controller. Nor does it deal with the issue of still having a SEVERELY limited number of buttons on the controller to map weapons, items, and abilities too.

​@beanwithbacon this is honestly false. How natural it feels is based on getting used to a new input. All of the things you mentioned are possible on a controller with a good configuration and practice.

After playing with gyro for 400 hours I got frustrated by the limitations of my gamepad. You have to constantly readjust aiming. In L4D2 I need - gyro - stick - and the quick 180 button to play. I know about flickstick so I'm really gonna give it a try now.

Some folks pick it up quickly, some take a while but then love it, and some end up sticking with gyro + traditional stick. I hope it goes well for you!

Not that I know of. Some of the folks at Valve know about flick stick and were considering it, but it's been a while and I haven't heard anything about them adding it.

It's a program I'm working on called JoyShockOverlay. It's not ready to be published yet, but it works well enough for me to make my videos. It appears live on my screen while I play.

What's your opinion on Trackballs? Someone actually put one in a 360 controller a while ago and it seems pretty good.

My proposition for more than a decade now is to at least implement ScrollWheels in these traditional 2 handed controllers. Since IMUs became common place, the idea is to control "macro" horizontal rotation with the index finger & vertical rotation with hand motion. At it is know we are in some sort of crossroads in regards to controllers where companies will need to make a decision, as button schemes have become contradictory in order to still retain "standarization". There has been enough progress on inputs (Scrollwheels, trackpads, thumbsticks, Capacitive buttons) to just rest each finger in a main input that accepts multiple actions. Is not like they couldn't just sell an extra cheap old controller for retro stuff and embrace something more advanced for current games.

Another reason I think why Analog Sticks aren't great is stick tension. The Xbox One controller stick tension is looser than the 360 Controller which reduces precision. Also, the Dualshock 4 switched to concave thumbsticks which is not good for aiming where as the PS3 and previous consoles had Domed sticks which has a better contact area for your thumb providing better accuracy.

How would you say the best way to practice using flick stick is?

Good question. I think single-player games (so you're not getting sniped while getting comfortable with your controls), especially ones that require a lot of movement. DOOM 2016 and DOOM Eternal work well. I think it helps if you're prepared to force yourself to rely on it a lot to try and get the hang of it, and the up-close-and-personal action of the two latest DOOM games does that well.

I can get this to work with Titanfall 2 by using a custom config created by someone else on your game list site, but it doesn't work for DOOM 2016 when I used your config. The gyro works and controls the mouse pointer when I'm in Windows desktop after I paste the DOOM.txt file into the joyshockmapper, but once I open the game for some reason it doesn't seem to recognize the controller.

@@JibbSmartGD Yea, I have JSM file on the desktop and tried running the exe file as both admin and non-admin. Actually, when I run JSM as admin, I couldn't even get the gyro working at all even when I'm in Windows. JSM (admin) for some reason couldn't load the config txt profiles by drag dropping, and even when I type the directory the gyro wouldn't register. PS. Thanks for trying to help.

Maybe it wouldn't. Quick, smooth/granular circular motion doesn't feel good in a notched controller, specially when you want sensitivity to at least 1 degree. It's funny that you mention the GC controller because it's the best designed (or at least with most engineering taught put in to it) than any of the other traditional controllers. For character movement & the style of 3rd person camera control of Nintendo games at that stage, having feedback when passing through any of the 8 directions was quite usefull. Also the GC controller is the only one where the stick placement is based on logic >;D

There are ways to do it with Remote play, I think. I haven't done it myself, but I think the idea is that you use an input mapper that can convert any input you want to DualShock 4 input, and play it through your PC? It can be tricky to map gyro input to stick output, though, because there are all sorts of limitations to get past -- deadzones, stick sensitivity, power curve, acceleration.

I aim vertically by turning the controller -- gyro aiming. My Counter Strike video goes into more detail about how that works. It's much more precise than traditional stick aiming.

I stil do not understand the difference between Flick Stick mode and Gyroscope mode. It's look the same for me. Or maybe Flick Stick use the thumbstick ONLY for horizontal moves and not vertical moves. Is it? Don't see much a improvements from Gyro and even some big downsides.

Flick stick works alongside gyro -- it's not useful without it. Flick stick is all about how we use the right stick, while gyro is all about turning the controller.

For now i'm struggling to configurate gyro on Steam since lot of games don't allow controller+mouse input at the same time, so we need to configurate a button to use gyro as a mouse and ir ruins the experience and make the key binding really confuses. I will give a try on JoyShocker, but I need to say that it looks really really confuse to me to use.

There are games that already do this... Look at Tenchu Wrath of Heaven. Yes, Tenchu is 3rd Person and not 1st Person, but it has the same function

Enjoy the drift. Then enjoy the compounding effects of drift over time with this software that sucks as much cpu as it does farts. Or check out what I do - no software, no drift, full bluetooth setup under 30sec.

@Hannyabal You don't get a superior device at all though, it's far far less accurate than a mouse and as far as movement, saying an analog stick is better than wasd is just moronic. Due to how the analog stick works and how it's input is read by the machine you are able to change strafe directions MUCH faster with keys than with an analog stick. Then there's the factor of a very limited number of buttons. On MnK I'm able to bind all my weapons to keys that are directly next to my movement keys, being able to move, aim, and change from any weapon to any other weapon on the fly is something that simply isn't possible wtih analog sticks. Go watch some Quake DeFrag movies and then try and tell me that movement is possible with analog sticks, because it's not.

@Hannyabal ROFL, except that with gyro you have to move something in free space. Mouse is still faster and more accurate than gyro controls. If controllers were just as viable for shooters as MnK than devs would have never felt the need to add in a built in aim cheat to shooters on peasant boxes in the first place. You sound like you're obviously rather new to FPS games. Let me guess you started with Halo, right..? Analog sticks simply lack the speed and accuracy required to perform many game mechanics that were standard in FPS games before the asinine concept that they could work with analog stick controllers came to be. Quake's movement is simply NOT possible with analog sticks. You can't even SNAP aim with analog sticks ffs. I know that the stick doesn't need to be pushed all the way to the edge in order to activate the strafe, but if it's pushed at all to left, there is still a delay as you move it past center to the right before it starts detecting input from the other direction. This is why movement ALWAYS just feels slow and clunky with analog sticks. You're trying to argue that analog input is read by the machine the same as digital input, which simply isn't the case and the digital input from a mouse will always offer more speed and accuracy in turn allowing FPS games to be played at a much higher level than with a controller. Then there's the range of motion, larger range of motion will ALWAYS allow for more accuracy. The only people that think a controller is just a functional in FPS games as MnK are people that obviously have never played PC shooters at any sort of higher level.

@Hannyabal You are completely ignoring the fact that things like weapon switching are still far better done with a keyboard where you can map them to any key you want or the fact that I still get a far larger range of motion while having a flat surface to rest your pointing device on in turn greatly helping with keeping aim steady. If gyro was superior you'd see the Quake pros switching over to it but you don't, so until then you're argument is null and void...

@Hannyabal You're the one with ignorance otherwise you wouldn't be avoiding some key factors that I keep mentioning, such as the limited number of buttons and lack of accuracy. Gyro may be fine for casual games like CS and Valorant, but for fast paced high skill floor/ceiling FPS games it will never compete with a mouse.

It's about convinience. Remenber we are talking about an user base that rejects any form of input advancement that deviates from the "standard". Thumbsticks were surpassed in precision & immersion since 2006, yet in 2020 the Xbox comes with Dual Analog controller.
