Thanks for watching! And I hear you on your kids. I think the Huskers production (the sheer decibel-crunching fuzz) has hurt their legacy among younger people. They don't really have a frame of reference for that kind of sound. It's a shame, though, because their songs make for a wonderful right of passage for anyone entering angst-riddled years.

I was late to the Husker party, not being introduced to them until '86-'87 by some friends of mine. They used to refer to Greg Norton as "Richelieu" beacause of the mustache. Consequently, I am one of those who find it a little more difficult to listen to the earlier stuff. My first album was Candy Apple Grey (my favorite Grant song: "Dead Set on Destruction), and then Warehouse came out soon after, while I was also working my way backwards through their earlier albums. I never totally warmed up to Zen Arcade, but after watching this Deep Dive, I definitely want to go back and revisit it, so thanks. Also, Husker's version of "Eight Miles High" belongs in your next covers video. Come to think of it, so does "Love is All Around." Thanks for another great video, Hollis.

Hey Max! Glad you enjoyed the video! Their Byrds cover is totally gonna be in my next installment of cover songs. I had SO much ground to cover in this video, though, that I consciously left the band's covers out. I love the Richelieu reference! You had some learned friends. I'm happy to have put Zen Arcade back on your radar. I find that listening along with the lyrics and blasting the stereo; or eyes closed while listening on headphones, are two great ways to enjoy that album. Thanks for the comment!

You nailed again. Pink Turns Blue is the greatest tune, on the greatest album, of one of the bands of all time. With that said, their hardcore stuff always feels more nostalgic for me because of how exciting it felt hearing it for the first time as an energetic young man. There just was no music like it.

Thank you! So glad you enjoyed the episode! I'm with you; so much of their music is like a time machine, and seems destined to retain that quality because there's still no band like them. I love how their music colored outside of the lines, sonically speaking, because although it didn't make for audiophile albums, they created one of the most unique sounds ever. In revisiting all their stuff I was kinda surprised how the hardcore stuff was way more fun than I remembered.

So about 2541, you’re not far off from the truth. The track was actually written for New Day Rising, but according to Bob, it sounded too similar to a Dream Syndicate song that was popular at the time so it was cut from the album. Bob mentioned in his book that he feels that that was the first moment where friction between him and Grant began, as he later realized that the song might’ve come from a personal place for Grant. Nevertheless it’s an awesome track and it makes me wonder what it would have been like had it been on NDR instead. Hüsker Dü is my favorite band of all time, from the very moment I first heard Zen Arcade, they meant the world to me. I had just turned 18 and my own personal issues growing up in a broken home came to a boiling point, and every time I was angry, frustrated, and felt so helpless, I would listen to that album and by the end, it put me in a zen like state (no pun intended 😂). Funny enough, I got into them shortly before Grant passed away. I remember waking up for school when I saw the news, and I was heartbroken. I thought would be fitting to listen to every thing I had of theirs on shuffle on the bus. The first song that came on was the first song I heard and fell in love with them, Don’t Want to Know If You Are Lonely. Great video man, I’ve been looking for something like this for a long time and you nailed it.

Hey, thanks a lot, Austin. I really appreciate the kind words from a true Huskers fan like you. You're so right, they have a way of pulling you out of whatever negative headspace you might be in, simply because they require all of you as a listener. If they're raw aggression doesn't get you, their sweet melodies will, and it's really impossible to maintain a bad mood once you put on their music. It's a shame Grant passed so young, but he had a lot of mileage on him, and he packed a lot of living into those years. Please check out my other episodes when you can; I think you'll find a few more that are right up your alley.

@@PopCultureGraveyard One of those things where you enjoy the version you heard first. For me, I heard Forster's version before Hart's. While Robert Forster's vocals may leave something left to be desired, the strength of the melody and lyrics ultimately carries the tune.

God damn you Hollis, you've got me going down such a nostalgia trip right now. Got me thinking about when I first bought Zen Arcade and I did the thing we all do when you first listen to an album of that quality, you listen to it over, and _over_ and *over* again. Well I was renting a couch at my cousin's place. She was a bit older and a valley girl type, so Husker Du was not her idea of a good time. Combine that with the fact that I had my girlfriend (now wife) over pretty much everyday and it was causing tension. I ended up just moving to San Pedro with my wife and didn't tell my cousin until the day I was leaving. Naturally, she (my cousin) was hurt over the whole thing, but I didn't care at the time because I was pissed at her. Looking back though I was being a selfish asshole and now I am feeling bad about it. So thanks for the emotional roller-coaster. And in return, here's an extra comment for the algorithm.
@PopCultureGraveyard

Another great video, and glad you sang the praises of Warehouse. I too think it is an underappreciated album. I have always marveled at the maturity of Husker Du's lyrics. They are singing about some deep, philosophical stuff and come across to me as introspective and wise. They even show that side in the liner notes to Warehouse. I remember reading those liner notes back when the album was released. I was 19 years old. Bob, who I'm guessing wrote the liner notes, would have been 27 then. Now when I look back on it I think, how the hell were these guys so thoughtful about life at that age? I can't even reach that level of introspection and I'm in my 50s. Glad you included 2541 too. I love Grant's solo stuff. Anyway, thanks for this deep dive.
@PopCultureGraveyard
@PopCultureGraveyard 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Eric! You're so right about the band's maturity back then. At the time they were recording Warehouse, Bob was actually 26 and Grant was 25. Crazy! I think of myself at that age, and it's embarrassing trying to think of me trying to communicate on that deep a level--let alone accomplishing so much. And I had to stick 2541 in there. It's been a favorite for a long time. So glad you enjoyed the episode!

That is a bold statement, my friend! Not many people frown on that album. But I'm totally with you on Candy Apple Grey, very underrated--and it's aging very well. Like other commenters, I've been waiting for this one, Hollis, and you didn't disappoint. Stellar episode about a stellar band. I got on board with Zen, still my favorite. Though I may like the Replacements a little more, I have to admit Husker Du were more influential on the sound of later bands. And the prolific output of killer hooks/lyrics thru the course of several albums (with no duds) reminds me of the roll that Ray Davies was on from the mid 60s to early 70s. Also, glad u mentioned the Blasting Concept. How bout that Erase Today, still a favorite. I could go on, right. Thanks, Hollis!! Oh, I gotta tell ya, my copy of Metal Circus was a later pressing and has a cool goof. Side 2 is actually side 4 of Zen. Not complaining, I like freaks.

Thanks a lot, Greg! Zen is a great album to get on board with--and you're right, their run of brilliant albums was Davies-esque. I think I used that Kinks analogy on a band in a recent episode, but now I can't remember which one. Good call on Erase Today! I wanted to go deep on everything, but if I've learned one thing doing these deep dives, it's that knowing what to leave out is even more important sometimes than what you leave in. I want these episodes to move along, and always have watchability in mind. And that's so funny about Metal Circus! You know, there was a guy on eBay recently, who was selling a Husker Du single that had one one side printed with two labels--one of which was totally covering one of the sides of music. I almost bought it!
