He ZhiWen is legend at 59 years old
This player is a legend. At 59 years old, he is still playing professionally. He is playing in Pro B in France. This is the match between ASTT Miramas versus the 4S Tours in France.
I really like watching him play. He has special sidespin serve, and his forehand attack with short pimps is crazy fast.
His name is 何志文 (He Zhiwen)
Special thanks to ASTT Miramas Table Tennis Club.

I've watched a lot of Zhiwen over the years. One thing that's always amused me is the fact he only really has two basic serves, these being the heavy side-spin that drops off the side of the table on a right-hander's forehand side, and a fast and straight top-spin which he varies in terms of direction, but it often goes down the other channel. Together they are highly effective for him because, the heavy side-spin serve is difficult to return from a standard receive position, so opponents often end up gradually moving to their right in order to reach it. If they go too far that way, he plays the fast top spin serve down their backhand side and they can't get it back. It's a devastatingly simply strategy but it works brilliantly. He is brilliant at executing both serves to perfection, although he does hide the ball sometimes (umpires never pull him up on it, so why change?). Here, he is using the top spin serve a lot and varying its direction because his opponent is clearly struggling to return it. His weakness, as his opponent quickly identified, is the fact he can't play the RPB (reverse penholder backhand) which is common for 'old school' penholders. This is an issue in the modern game because of the pace and spin modern rubbers generate, making it harder for a penholder to cope using the forehand side exclusively.

I am a penhokd player too. I havent played table tennis for over 30 years, but I've just started again, one if the first thing I decided to learn was the RPB! His serve is similar to mine as I have basically the same 2 serves too!

@haehne 4 ай бұрын
i really think he has more than just two serves, he actually hides the spin very well with seemingly the same movement. in other vids i saw top pros dropping their return low into the net because he's serve had insane back spin.
@Wally-H
@Wally-H 4 ай бұрын
@@haehne They are slight variants on those two basic serves though. We all vary our serves a bit - I have many variations on my own stock serve, e.g. changing the angle of the bat to change the amount of side and underspin. Of course he tweaks elements of them so his opponent doesn't get too comfortable with what he is doing, but everything is built around the two basic serves.

Well, not really, the body deteriorates in all aspects. Brain is not as agile at processing information, your body doesn't respond as quickly as it used to, your organs suffer more doing the same exercise. In table tennis, if the points are quick, it might not be a problem, especially if you're good at positioning and predicting where the ball will go, but in longer rallies you will suffer. In this case, I'm amazed of his reflexes and speed, but generalising "age is just a number" might hurt other people who can't even walk fast to catch the bus.

@@Belgamor77 I understand your point and you are right. But, I said what I said in order to provide optimism, because there are so many old people like him who are doing very surprising things that not even the average youth people can do. That is why.

@@PanchoGDMKWii Oh, yes, I agree with you, it's wonderful seeing old people keeping this active, this well, and achieving this much, it's an inspiration, and I wish I could keep playing at his age. Highest world ranking was only about 15, and he never played for the Chinese National Team. Excellent player and one of the best veterans but a legend in China? Not sure about that. To everyone who claps - Please DON'T clap for EVERY point. A few points are fine. But EVERY. SINGLE. POINT? I've got news for you. The 1st point in the game is not a win, LOL. The guy still has 10 pts to go. It's extremely annoying to watch a game, and even to play a game, when the entire room claps AS LOUD AS THEY CAN FOR EVERY. SINGLE. POINT. Especially in gyms where there's no sound treatment and hence has tons of echo and amplifies the sound. So if you're reading this, don't be one of those clappers. For certain, clap for a couple pts. But not every single one. Even as a player where my fans are clapping for me...it's quite distracting. For those watching the video, I suggest you mute the sound 2-3 minutes in.

You're talking about personal experience in amateur leagues I assume? This is a professional league, it's normal that everyone claps all the time to support their team, a lot of players at that level get pumped up even more when people cheer for them! It's of course different from clapping midpoint, that should never happen. But please don't gatekeep people from watching a fun competition and supporting their teammates / team.
