Ha Long Bay is Overrated (Part 1)

After doing a 1 night 2 day cruise, our conclusion is that Ha Long Bay is overrated. It was one of the most expensive things we did in Vietnam and our least favourite. Yes, the views from the cruise are impressive, but once you get closer to the water when you go kayaking you’ll see the side of Ha Long Bay not shown on social media: all the plastic floating in the water. It is incredibly heartbreaking. We realize that maybe not everyone had this experience. Maybe it was a bad area, maybe it was bad timing, but this type of plastic is coming from somewhere and does not accumulate overnight. We really hope that this will be addressed in the future and that part of the money collected from these expensive cruises will go towards clean-up and education. There is a better area to visit in Vietnam with similar views and no plastic (we actually saw clean up crews helping maintain this area) and we had a much better experience there. Location of this place will be shared in our next post.

The tour companies are working on reducing plastic waste. They banned any packaged product sales on board. Unfortunately it is still possible to by products from locals that come by in smaller boats and we have also seen some products that tourists won’t typically buy (like packaging of frozen meals). We hope the tour operators continue working with the government to reduce the plastic waste and to educate people!

It sparks a conversation as we can attest. If everyone filters out experiences like that, that doesn’t help either. While I’m sure that tourism unfortunately continues to the pollution, the majority of the trash we saw was from products that tourists typically would not consume. The tour operators also banned single used plastic on board a while ago, which is a great first step in the right direction.

Tourists don't leave such trash behind. On the contrary, all over South East Asia, the Caribbean and even the Mediterranean, it's often the tourists who organize clean-up drives of local beaches and invariably the locals who pollute the environment. Trying to claim the opposite is both deeply dishonest and counterproductive for the countries themselves, as they'll only lose tourists and the income tourism generates. All of the countries of Asia need to launch long-term public education campaigns to teach their populations NOT to litter and how to keep their own environment clean and tidy.

Easier said than done. We didn’t realize how bad it is when we got into the kayak and with very limited time we were not able to take action. It’s better taking a video than being silent and act like nothing is wrong.

This is fake. Haloing bay is one of the prettiest and clean places ever in 2024. Must visit for the tourists at least once. I went recently and would love to go back. It had breath taking views. Iaslo went kayaking and the water was clearly not like this. I don’t see one plastic in the water

I don't know if it's bc of your video, but we just went to Halong Bay yesterday, and we were told we weren't allowed to bring single-use plastic bottles to the area. I think it must be greatly cleaned up since your video bc I didn't notice much trash in the water.

Entire Vietnam is like that actually. Just leave the tourist areas and move 5 minutes into the suburbs. That's it.

Sometimes it’s clean, sometimes it’s trashy. It seems like it depends on the current and season. Like after a storm, trashes are carried and washed up on the shore from somewhere else.

Yes do share all the pristine areas, bring in more tourists , more garbage , then move onto the next unspoilt area .. well done

This creator sounds like an entitled Karen. She complains about the bay like it’s some kind of tourist attraction for westerns to “avoid” or “partake” but she forgets that this is people HOME. it’s a source of immense pride for the Vietnamese, and for you to “review” it like it’s Epcot center is unfair. It’s not a place to avoid because of litter, but you go there and you marvel at the scenery in spite of the litter.

We went there many years ago and it was clean. Sad to see the trash. Hope the authorities put in more effort to highlight the situation to visitors and clean it up. The natural beauty is just so beautiful and will be such a waste to let the litter mar its beauty.

How is this place overrated? You’re only going into the depths of the trash. So every place you go to that has trash is overrated? Ha long bay is beautiful besides the trash and theres more to it. Some people even put trash in there that is not tourists but i bet 1/4 miles to 2/4 of the trash is by tourists. Please explain to me why you think it’s overrated, cause if it’s only trash, I can’t agree with you.

I think a better title coulve been used to raise awareness. The message could've been addressed without a bratty and dismissive tone. I hope you look forward to developing as a content creator.

Overrated is not an appropriate word. Ha Long Bay is stunning and is widely known to be one of the most beautiful places to visit on Earth. It's being constantly wrecked by foreigners and locals, which is sad.

irresponsible tourists. you say it’s overrated. You will share another location which is better now where you had great experience but will be like ha long in next 2 3 years. No matter what you do if any place is touched by a human being its fate is written to be spoiled.
