Haast's eagles were massive birds of prey, in fact, the largest of their kind, and dominated the skies of New Zealand for a substantial period of time. The arrival of people to this land, however, changed things, and with the loss of their prey, the large and unique moa, the faded into extinction, and only their bones and a handful of passed down accounts now exist. What we do have however paints a fabulous picture of their anatomy, behaviour and potential interactions with people. I hope you enjoy.

I really liked this video. Because its usually just depicted as "Giant Eagle", I usually have found the Haast's eagle to be very uninteresting. But in light of this new information about its different feeding habits from modern day raptors, had how that behavior elongated the skull and increases the size of the talons, this bird has become much more interesting and unique to me. Thanks for the great video!

Thank you for posting this, and your other New Zealand birds videos. I'm fascinated by the pre-human, bird-dominated biology of New Zealand, and am using it as the basis for a sci fi world I'm developing. In particular, I'm inspired by the predator-prey relationship of the Haast's Eagle and the Moa. The twist in my story is that the alien aerial hunters playing the eagles' role end up being sapient. Thanks for aiding in my research!

I wonder why Haast’s eagles weren’t found in the north island? Like you said, there was only a thin gap of water, and plenty of north island moas to prey upon. Maybe we just haven’t discovered any fossils from the north island yet?

That's the most likely explanation. Perhaps preservation bias, or another North Island subspecies specialized to hunting large North Island endemic Moas like the N. island giant Moa.

The Haast's Eagle (Harpagornis moorei) is an extinct eagle species that inhabited New Zealand, it was one of the largest eagles that ever lived, its closest known relative is the Mather's Eagle (Dynatoaetus gaffae) in the closest living relatives of both species are the Pygmy Eagle (Australotriorchis weiskei), the Little Eagle (Australotriorchis morphnoides), the Gurney's Eagle (Gigantotriorchis gurneyi), and the Wedge-Tailed Eagle (Gigantotriorchis audax), all these species are members of a unique tribe of true eagles known as Gigantotriorchidini, which is exclusively native to Oceania, this tribe was once more diverse containing many eagle species native to Oceania, many eagle species in the Gigantotriorchidini tribe have been known to take on large prey.

New Zealand was the only place on earth that went on for 81 million years without any mammals. Allowing bird's to take their place. Which is why NZ has such variation and large bird's fill the hole giant mammals filled everywhere else. Which is why the introduction of opossums, rats, and stoats have been so destructive on their unique bird's found nowhere else. Like the Moa that dominated as top predator for 81 million years until the 14th century when man killed of all several species of Moa in just 100 years. Who's largest 12ft tall 500+lb species only predator was thought to be this eagle prior to man.

South Sea Islanders vary a lot in skin tone. The Solomon Islanders are among the darkest in the world, as are the people in the island groups off Papua New Guinea. Polynesians (New Zealand Māori, Hawaiians, Samoans) are not that dark, probably the same skin tone as most Mexicans. Fijians are in between the two. What's more distressing is that while you pose as woke, you don't know the difference between the native peoples of Australia and NZ. The natives of Australia have been there for tens of thousands of years, while those of New Zealand have been there less than a thousand years. The Māori appear to have arrived in New Zealand around the time Europeans were still fighting in the Crusades.

William Martin They have the typical skin tone of polynesian people which they are,not as you think australian aborigines nor indeed new zealand being some kind of peninsula of australia not an isolated island 1000 miles away. They were actually only living in new zealand 6 centuries before european colonisation as opposed to the australian aborigines being in australia for atleast 50 000 years .
