Wow! I had this same idea in the shower yesterday, while just thinking about things. Using an LCD as a stand-in for a slide, and all! I wasn't sure if anyone else had thought of it; seems like I was beaten out by 6 years. Still, I'm glad it exists at all, rather as a dustbunny in the back of my head. This is so cool. Thanks for sharing.

Fun fact about the projector in the video: I found it on Ebay Kleinanzeigen (German version of Craigslist) for 5 €. I went to the house of the owner here in Cologne and upon arrival I noticed a gigantic and incredibly expensive High-End Audio-System in his house. After I had inspected the projector I couldn't help myself and started a friendly conversation about his stereo system. It must have been worth many tens of thousands of Euros if not more and the guy told me that he "worked for a Hifi-magazine" but that it was also "his hobby". So I left and on my way home I checked his name on Google only to find out, that I had just visited Michael Lang, the chief editor of the "Stereo"-magazine, positive-feedback.com/interviews/interview-with-michael-lang-editor-of-stereo-magazine/

Keep in mind that heating of the LCD panel will end its lifespan early. TFT technology is more heat resistant than regular LCD panels. I made from scratch a video projector back in 1992 using a CASIO pocket TV but that technology was plain LCD and the screen burned out after a few minutes. Then I acquired the first Phillips TFT TV pocket projector and that ended up being stable. I even sold the projector to a school when they were not yet available in the market...

very nice hack , and very nice proof of concept. The lenses on these projectors can be quite good. My concern though is something that shows to this presentetion and namely the resolution with the overhead projector we utilize a normal tft screen with a resolution of something like 1024x768 or better on 15inches screen. On the wall this translates to a low ratio and a good non pixalated screen. with the dia projector we are constrained to use a 35x24mm window with a resolution of something like 480x270. This creates a huge blow up that shows on the pixelated screen. even by using a 60x60mm forma projector things can not improve much as we will also need a high density lcd screen which is not so easy or cheap to come by. but thanks for one more very nice project.

This is a great channel showing re use of old machines and components. This was a quality antique projector before the failed experiment. It seems now it is only useful for the parts bin. It may have been obvious that a smaller lcd or larger format projector would have produced better results. I would have preferred to see a repair or tune up video of this machine. Maybe an LED upgrade of the light source if possible. Keep up the good work!

I really enjoy your inventiveness :-D, the slide projector is not too far away from commercial units that people use for presentations. That one was built really well, german engineering is well known for quality and reliability. Although they can go a bit too far with complexity, simple is often reliable :-). If you do find a bigger 60 x 60 mm lcd, you may want to add a really good fan near the lcd, i can see it being cooked by the lamp, that would be a shame :-(.

at least a android phone will be capable of playing many formats directly from SD, the camera he was using probably is very fussy on its format, its only meant to playback its own files, yes you wont find a square screen, but you can maybe control the format from the video player and force 4:3

Interesting that the first concept of a digital projector was a monochrome LCD in a slide projector, the guy that was working on this was at the time trying to work out how to get 3 LCD's in focus at the same time, there were no colour LCD's back then, so the 3 monochrome LCD's would have filters for each colour. That was the last i heard until digital projectors were released. I've done searches, but can't find any reference to it.

Surprised I didn't see mention of using a display for a Raspberry Pi. The most likely candidate I found (assuming I still know how to math) was a 2.8in TFT display which should be a touch smaller than what is ideal. I also found a 3.2in display, which would be a touch big if that were a square, but it has a wider aspect ratio so I doubt that one would work at all.

Maybe get an lcd slightly smaller than the 6x6 size, so that you can block out the edges of the round light, and have the image on the wall be more square?

The Raspberry Pi GPIO displays that you get from AliExpress should fit , you can connect it to a raspberry pi and install openelec , maybe even retropi for a awesome little media player on the go. the biggest problem will allways be resolution I think the highest I've seen those small screens go is 320x240 you can get higher but they are ofthen times designed for cellphones and can't be driven easily. Regardless, awesome project and video , looking forward to some more experiments.
@ZXRulezzz
@ZXRulezzz 7 жыл бұрын
The even bigger problem to me with those that I've encountered is that no matter the resolution, they have dog slow update rates, which makes them totally unusable for any enjoyable video playback. The one I had, had a parallel data bus that took up almost all of raspberry's GPIO (and didn't support any hardware acceleration), and then, even with differential updates, it was awful to use even in fbconsole. That said, I never got around to running X and other graphical stuff on it. Just my 2 cents, YMMV.

The heat from the bulb will severely shorten the lifetime of the small LCD screen, I would make sure that it has ventilation, and perhaps insulate the electronics from the hot areas. Also, see if a suitably bright LED bulb can replace the projector bulb. However that might not fit the low-cost theme.
@cojones8518
@cojones8518 7 жыл бұрын
A small tablet or smartphone could work. You'd probably be better off gutting the projector and making a custom enclosure with the lens and bulb.. Then you could use an even larger screen by adjusting the focal length between the lens and lcd to suit the width of the LCD.

@Seegalgalguntijak
@Seegalgalguntijak 7 жыл бұрын
Something in the size of an old iPhone 4S should work. But preferrably an Android phone with that type of screen, because it can be used more easily to play videos from and most likely has an SD card slot for that. As for driving it, yes the smartphone itself would work, but you'd need to attach an external mouse (I've seen people do that, because their digitizer was broken), so it needs to be able to do USB Host mode.

I'd consider make use of an old & cheap (nowadays) smartphone - like Samsung Galaxy "Chat" i.e. - Small, but relatively high resolution 4:3 ratio screen and Android (there are also similar older & even cheaper winndows Mobile models) (multiformat media players + SD cards + internet browsing etc.) - That'd be kinda smartprojector!

I recently got a dia projector for no costs at all. There is this ebay part, in Germany called "Kleinanzeigen" (classifieds?), where I looked for one for quiet a time, only in the neighborhood (living in Berlin still close to one million people) to even avoid shipping costs, which might be critical, because they aren't that small and a bit heavy and vulnerable against throwing packages. So this would be real work for the seller. Or you get it from a flea market or a second hand shop. A lot of old people had such devices but their children don't have any use for them. So they give them away for low prices or for no money at all when their parents die.
