25:40 the actor here is a real war veteran who lost his legs in combat. Also, the sniper you see in this actually lived in real life and later said his gun kept jamming every time he tried to shoot Desmond. He was definitely protected by God! It was said that Desmond had a very calming affect on people. He’d talk to them like it was just another day and they were sitting at home. They said he gave people a huge sense of peace and calm. So beautiful! The Lord used him in a mighty way! If I could be used like this by just a fraction, I’d have lived my life well. Ps. Definitely watch "Band of Brothers" if you haven't yet!

"With the world so set on tearing itself apart, it don't seem like such a bad thing to me to want to put a little bit of it back together." Fun Fact: The film received a standing ovation lasting nine minutes and forty-eight seconds at the Venice Film Festival in September 2016. Mel Gibson timed it. Casting Notes Fact: Teresa Palmer wanted a role in the film so badly that she auditioned via her smart phone and sent the recording to Mel Gibson. She heard nothing back for three months, until Gibson called Palmer to tell her that she landed the role. Location Location Fact: The battlefield sequence, overseen by Mel Gibson's longtime stunt double Mic Rodgers, was filmed on a small dairy farm (about one hundred square kilometres) near Sydney, Australia. Smoke trucks circled the perimeter to make sure any scenery that didn't look like World War II Okinawa was effectively blocked out. Historical Fact: When asked how many lives he saved, Desmond T. Doss said approximately fifty. However, witnesses said it was closer to one hundred. A mutual agreement was reached at approximately seventy-five. PFC Doss was not wounded and evacuated in a daylight assault at Hacksaw Ridge. He was wounded a couple of weeks later in the Okinawa campaign during a night attack near Shuri. As per his Medal of Honor citation (noted above), he was wounded in the legs by a grenade, but had to wait five hours before stretcher bearers could reach him, during which time he dressed his own wounds. While being carried back to safety by three stretcher bearers, they were attacked by a Japanese tank. Doss crawled off the stretcher to a more seriously wounded man and insisted the others evacuate that soldier and then return for him. While waiting for the stretcher to return, he was shot by a sniper as he was being carried by another soldier. This caused a compound fracture of his arm, for which he improvised a splint using a rifle stock. He then crawled three hundred yards to an aid station for treatment.

Also keep in mind that Desmond had contracted Tuberculosis during his time in the pacific. He lost a lung from the disease and lost his hearing due to the antibiotics he was given to combat it. He also as a vegetarian was barely eating, all he could eat from the military K rations he was given was the hard tack crackers and coconuts he managed he find. He did not smoke, drink alcohol and even did not drink coffee or tea as he saw caffeine as a addictive substance. He saved the lives of all those men while seriously ill and starving which makes his story even more incredible.

36:10 You guys are both right here. On the field, it was believed Doss saved around 100 men. In his MOH citation, the official number was listed as 75. And the modest man that he is, Doss said at the time "Couldn't have been more than 50!" 😂 I love the real Desmond Doss. He was such a simple man. To him, God was enough; all he needed.
@or10nsharkfin
@or10nsharkfin 8 ай бұрын
One of the many details that I really like about this movie is that the filmmakers intentionally held back on a lot of the actual history behind Doss's actions--mainly because they believed nobody would have thought it convincing that he would have been able to achieve the things he actually did. Okinawa was his third island campaign. Before his unit even shipped off to the Pacific he was already well-respected by his fellow soldiers due to his selflessness and his ability to keep up with the rest of them. During the Battle of Okinawa when he was wounded, rather than being carried off immediately he demanded they set him down and take another wounded man. He provided field triage to other wounded around him while he, himself, was suffering from wounds. The actual number of men he saved off of that ridge is supposedly higher than what they eventually settled on.

As a veteran I am proud to see today’s interest in the military genre of movies. The advances in special effects have presented such an immersive visual effect, those without military experience can get a little idea of the “HARSH REALITY” our military can face. I had the honor to attend a special showing of “Saving Private Ryan” the second week of its theatrical release. The first two rows (floor level and one up) were reserved for WWII veterans & family. Just before the coming attractions showed, approximately 20 people were ushered to their seats. At the end only subdued sniffles and sobs could be herd with NOONE moving to leave. After a brief pause the first of the veterans got up to leave, while the rest of us in attendance gave them ALL a standing ovation as they left. There seems to be a flow-over effect of people watching some older movies; “Full Metal Jacket”, “Platoon”, “M*A*S*H”, “Apocalypse Now” etc. I think these movies are great but need to be viewed with the filter of social commentary for the time they were made. I would like to see reactions to two older movies, based on two of the most decorated war heroes. These movies, though not posing the fantastic special effects of today’s movies, contain just as much interest by the simple act of storytelling. The first is the story of one of the most decorated soldiers of WWI. The main character of the story (Alvin C York) chose actor Gary Cooper to portray him. Released in September 1941, just before America entered WWII, “Sergeant York”. The second story is about the MOST DECORATED soldier of WWII. The movie not only adapted from his autobiography (Audie Murphy) but starred him as well. From October 1955, just over ten years after the end of the war “To Hell and Back”.

I was a Navy Hospital Corpsman (Medic) in Vietnam (3 Tours). I had 4months of basic medical training and two months of combat medical training when I was assigned to the Marines. The army medical training is similar. They don't just say you're a medic. There are not enough men that volunteer to be a medic. Tests are taken while you are in training. If your test shows an aptitude for medicine, then they ask you to volunteer or just send you to school to be a medic. If you are not good at it they send you back to infantry. Most medics that have been in combat can do the job as well as or better than some doctors or nurses. According to the Geneva Conventions medics are not to carry offensive weapons. I never carried a weapon. During times not in combat the medic is supposed give first aid lessons to his whole platoon frequently. So, anyone can take over basic first aid if the medic is killed. They can carry a pistol for their own protection and the protection of the one they are working on. Those two medics in the same fox hole should never be close to each other during combat (That’s one of the first things you learn). One of my tours in Vietnam I was on a ship on the Co Chien River in the Mekong Delta. Me and another corpsman were the only medical personnel on board. Being the only medical person onboard I did everything medical. If you were on a ship or with the Marines, you were called Doc. We were taught that during combat conditions we were to be on opposite ends of the ship. The 2 corpsmen we replaced were together during a fire fight and they both got killed. You never remember all the ones that you have treated but you never forget the ones you can’t save.

It is my favorite war movie…because Mel Gibson (the director) left nothing out. He did not let perceived sensitivities censor anything real that actually occurred in the story. It was nominated for several awards, but only won 2 relatively minor academy awards. To me it was obvious that other members of the “academy” didn’t do the same as Mel and his production company. His production company, along with the comedy of Chappell (in another gendre) have integrity and courage when story telling

Great reaction! As to Mel Gibson, his direction reached its zenith (so far) was in The Passion of the Christ. First, the entire script is spoken in Aramaic. Moreover, it simply doesn’t soft pedal the passion. It’s as brutal as the actual event. But, as a believer, it will hit you so deeply, you might never get over it.

Mel Gibson movies are beautiful and violent. Usually based on true events or true stories. This, The Passion of the Christ, Braveheart , Once we were Soldiers, The Patriot. Not Blackhawk Down, tho some people think so. Ur next movie should be Once we were Soldiers, in Vietnam. it's based on the book, written by the reporter in the movie, who was actually there! About the first battle in Vietnam. Also look up a video here about maybe the greatest soldier of all time! type in here, Roy Benevides the Lazarus Soldier. I met him once in early nineties, when I was stationed at Bragg! The dad served in Belleau Wood which was hell in a meat grinder, in WW1 Doss actually saved many more guys and was I think put in for another CMH! Every unit he was attached to, when Doss prayed for them, that unit was successful. He forgot to pray one time, and that unit got chewed up! The guy he saved with the blown up legs lived a long healthy life! There are even a few reports from Japanese soldiers who were there, who said multiple times they had Doss in their sights, and their rifles always jammed!😮😮

This movie suffers from time compression. By the time Doss's company landed on Okinawa ir was their 3rd landing. The company already knew of Doss's bravery and respected him. His captain claimed Doss saved over 100 men that say and night. When the Army interviewed Doss . He humbly said maybe around 50 men. So the Army split the difference with 75.. Part of Doss's beliefs made him a vegetarian. When the bulk of the calories from Army food was meat. Doss was constantly hungry and often at near starvation. He lived on Army potatoes vegetables and any fresh fruit , roots, or vegetables he could scrounge.

I'm pretty sure that the medic kit wouldn't hold enough morphine and bandages for all the people he helped. I have a feeling God was helping his supply during his time there on Hacksaw.

He had a whole triage base at the zenith of the base in the movie, we see him bringing people there before the morning attack, it would stand to reason many supplies would be left behind, plus he knew where shecters body as.

You should really Google Desmond Doss and read everything he did!!! I believe his entire life story should be taught in school.

Life is all about perspective. He could have looked at Smitty and accepted defeat and just given up, but he didn't. He chose to focus on those he COULD save. Atheists will tote about 'If God is so great, why didn't he save the others too' but they forget that the world doesn't work that way. God gave everybody free will, and that includes the ability to see miracles everywhere and push forward, despite the bad that happens around us.
