Zone Motion - 4 Out Base Zone Offense

Our base zone offense was a 4 out alignment with our 5 man on the baseline behind the zone. The guards were to pass and cut to heart of the defense, and then take a step back towards the ball. If they don't get the ball they are to vacate to the open side. We wanted movement on the perimeter with a constant revolving middle man, and penetration into the gaps.

Trailing Big at Top of Key to catch the 1st pass, my favorite because that means the point guard dribbled down the sideline instead of middle of the court.

Thanks for publishing this. I run in leagues that only allow M2M D, but will be going into leagues that allow Zone D and was looking for an offensive set that might work with my guard-heavy team. This looks promising.

Every time I watch this, number 10 jumps off the screen! Can't wait to implement this motion this year!

Starting possessions with a 2-Guard Front = 2-2-1 or 2-3 Low Set, very clever because it mirrors the defense's 2-Guard Front in their 2-3 Zone Defense. 😀😀😀 It later transforms to a 1-Guard Front after the 1st pass is made = 1-3-1 or 3-Out 2-In.

I coached against this team. He could have pulled clips from any game to show this. His players always 1. Knew their role 2. Knew the offensive principles 3. Always ran it hard. Hard to guard that at any level!

Really like this stuff and the triangle cutting stuff vs zone. Do you have anything else on it? A packet maybe on the rules for the guards?

I used to watch Princeton and Air Force in great detail and they did similar stuff in the offense vs zone with 4 out and cutting into the middle. But never really got the rules of it, and they would not tell me of course haha!

Coach, is this similar to the Read and React Zone offense? As I watch I'm wondering if the rules are the same.

Read and React loves the pin screen against zones, which I don't see any of here. Still many similarities.

coach any drills you can throw my way for this? I have a team where our bigs are not skilled nor any basketball IQ so we are playing 4 on 5 a lot. My guards don't even want to pass them the ball we do a great job of penetrating on often force up shots because our bigs just cant finish. we run this exact concept but trying to get more out of it.

Question: after the pass, the passer cuts to the middle, however the player has to leave after the first pass to someone else because that player needs to cut to the middle. Therefore the cutter to the middle will only get a pass from the player he passed to essentially making the offense an offense of give and go's, in this case give and go to the middle for the pass back. It would seem to me it would be easier to get the pass to the middle after 2 passes or more. Shouldn't the middle player exit the middle after every other pass or would that make it hard for the players to remember? ,

What's the rule for the 5 man on the baseline.?... and does the the high post try to empty to the side away from that 5 man?

Hey coach great footage. I am not trying to troll videos and leave negative comments but 85% of the shots open/available/taken were outside the arc(lower percentage shots) So it seems like the zone was pretty affective against this motion offense. What if you dont have 2 or 3 guys that can hit those shots regularly? Thoughts?

2 questions: 1) any read/wrinkles for ball screens and off ball screens? 2) do you have a spacing rule or something for the person in the high post when penetration happens? I feel like with all zone offenses that utilize the high post they get in the way of dribble penetration

We usually have one zone ball screen set per season. We don't really do it out of this concept... We don't. It's one of the tradeoffs with this concept - the middle is usually filled.

Matt Hackenberg I’ve been trying to find some kind of continuity zone offense that implements some type of continuous off ball screen.

Ryan love it, we do something similar, we usually send our guard opposite corner, seal hard with the post player and it puts x3 in a spot to guard the wing and corner
