To explain Arache's dislike of Melinoë working with the gods, she's actualy more worried for her Arachne used to be human, through means she challenged Athena at a weiving contest...Arachne won and because Athena was petty she turned Arachne into a spider

I believe it was because the tapestry she wove that won showed the worst aspects of the gods while Athena’s showed the best. But Arachne’s was still better, which even Athena knew. So she was cursed out of revenge

It was never out of malice it was to save her from herself. Whether she won or not is never specified as far as I know but the point is arachne was being completely inappropriate so she kinda had it coming.
