Hades is excellent. Seriously very excellent. A level of excellent that has quickly seen it become one of my favorite games ever.
Top notch combat, a terrific blend of RPG and roguelike qualities, amazing writing, graphics, and music. Hades' mythological tale of family conflict is just fantastic.
Easily Supergiant's best work, to the point where I really don't have a bad thing to say about it. And that's that!

The rooms themselves are not procedurally generated. However the “levels” (I assume he meant each floor) are procedurally generated in terms of order of the rooms, enemies that appear, rewards you are offered, whether chaos/xxxx gates spawn, fishing points popping up, etc. (I.e. the first “level” is Tartarus, once you beat that you ride the elevator up to the next level, etc.)

Whenever anyone has asked me to describe this game, one of the first things I say is that it's a roguelike that _wants_ for you to win. No shade for games like Spelunky, but this is a game that wants you to play it, wants you to enjoy it, and wants you to finish it so that you'll be excited to go back and do it all again. It's a hedonistically perfect 5/7 imho. (Oh and Dio is my wine-BFF too!)

Mirror of Night is one of the most perfect mechanics I've seen, it really makes the game what it is and perfectly sets the pacing of the story, in my opinion. This was my game of the year, hands down the best design for a repetitive grindfest that rewards you with story. It's well educated on Greek mythology to an insane level, this game mentions stuff I thought only would ever serve me in Trivia Pursuit 😂. If this dev drops a sequel it's a must buy for me, it's the ARPG rogue-lite platinum standard now.

I don't know where you got that, but Zagreous is anything but Hades' son. It's often identified as Persephone and Zeus' son (and this happened before the kidnapping of Persephone by Hades), killed, got his heart eaten by Zeus and revived.
@visibleconfusion782
@visibleconfusion782 3 жыл бұрын
@@LilithOfTheNephilims Not necessarily, and it depends from telling to telling. Zagreus became Zeus’s son when he was conflated with Orphic Dionysus. Most Chthonic gods predated Ancient Greece and even Mycenaean Greece, which is why we know so little of them. One things is for sure, Zeus and Hades did not exist as part of the Mycenaean pantheon. Zagreus predates them both. If anything, he’s more of Hades’s son since he’s often equated as him. And he’s mostly described as the son of Persephone and “Chthonios Zeus” AKA Hades, since Hades is to Zeus as to the Chthonic as Zeus is to the Ouranic. Orphism also had the tendency to equate Zeus and Hades so the same might’ve happened to Zagreus Dionysus. “Zagreus” is really really old and by the time Ancient Greece rolled around it became more of a title as the case of Dionysus and Dionysiodotes Apollo. By that time he was more or less Dionysus, who was Zeus’s kid.

One of the most fun parts for me is the sly little references they make to more obscure points of Greek mythology. F'rinstance: at one point Dionysus asks Zagreus to play a prank on Orpheus, asking him to tell Orpheus that they (Zagreus and Dionysus) are actually the same guy. AND AS IT TURNS OUT, the god Zagreus and the god Dionysus had something of an intertwined cult in Grecian myth, so it looks like Orpheus bought it. Love this game, been playing since it dropped on Steam, 10/10.

They sort of were the same god? Dionysus is the "respectable" version of Zagreus whose cult was ancient and kind of scary, they basically shed the death and existential madness aspect of Zagreus over the centuries and turned him into the god of drunkness and theatres by the time the classical era rolled out. It's like Afrodite being originally also a war god and the greek version of the middle eastern god Astarte, lot of weird stuff happened to the greek pantheon during the greek dark ages.

I felt the same. I enjoy a roguelike if it's like this, where every run gives you some progression and makes you better. I bounced off Spelunky and Isaac for that reason, the fact you lose and start from scratch every time so it just feels like I'm spinning my wheels. I was surprised at how much you keep from run to run. Even things I assumed you wouldn't, or would be reduced like your darkness or keys or the gems. It's that thoroughly rewarding feeling of "You lost, but you didn't lose anything of real value" that keeps me going in these games. You don't get that "Well that was going well, but that single mistake ruined everything..." feeling. That sense that an hour's work is just down the drain.

If that is accurate, I think what they failed to consider when making that decision is; I wish to shower the Gorgon head in affection. It's cute how she has a crush initially.

@@rocker26a If you get far enough down Dusa's conversation chain she and Zag actually bring up the three types of love and declare their totally Platonic love for each other. Very cute. I'm with Jim in saying this is one of the best games of all time, for one simple reason: There is nothing to complain about. Every tiny detail has been polished to a mirror shine, and the things you get pissed about in other games simply do not exist here. - There's little to no loading times or time-wasting flourishes when entering rooms, opening menus, initiating dialogue, etc. - Menus and information are concise, fast, and clear so you spend just the right amount of time reading before moving on - The writing is so charming you don't mind sitting through them - You don't have to hoover dropped gold because it's automatically picked up - You can go to the next room once you're done without waiting for exposition, or status effects to wear out, or hunting for the goddamn exit - You don't have to micromanage your stats, every upgrade you pick is beneficial, there are almost no duds, and you can have an effective fighter regardless of how you build - The action is super clear even though the spites are so small and the action so fast, and that goes double for the enemies - When you think you've mastered a weapon, you get to unlock different versions with alterations to their movesets, and NO FUCKING PENALTIES - There are not one, but at least two confirmed gay couples in the game, possibly a third (not including Dionysus and Aphrodite) The only minor gripe I have is grinding for some rare resources to fully upgrade/decorate the house or give gifts to the gods, but even then, you can get all tangible gameplay benefits without getting to max level.

@Vesperitis
@Vesperitis 3 жыл бұрын
@@pmkaboo2446 oh yeah sure, it's far more balanced now. Like I said, there are very few 'dud' loadouts, and I've been able to consistently get to the final boss and either kill him or get close to killing him using a variety of weapons and skills. The game also rarely gives you the same options for each run, so you have to switch strategies and boons.

The thing that I kinda love the most is that they give you an actual ingame plot reason to play through the game multiple times. This game really has genius design for my taste. It's just the right amount of "rogue-lite" that still gives you builds and theorycrafting. It's hard to put into words but I'll try anyway, it's as if every Hades run was the compilation of the best moments of the process of leveling up a character in Diablo 3, getting skills/gear and killing high level content except in Diablo 3 this process takes 30, 40, 80 hours while in Hades it takes 25, 30 minutes most of the time. It's the highlights of a Diablo 3 character, only the fun, rewarding and exciting parts without the excessive grinding and downtime. And then of course there's the story, the characters, the rpg progression mechanics, the voice acting and the OST.. I agree, it's also one of my favorite games of all time.

Yay!! Finally a “mainstream” review. Went from thinking I wouldn’t like it to balls deep 50+ hours in 2 weeks

i mean, IGN did a review where they gave it 9 out of 10, but also made it seem like it was so focussed on being snarky and cool that i thought "uuuuurgh i'm old and this sounds shiiiiiit" jim put so much more context that he turned it right round

@@storageheater Did you watch the same review I did, the one just out? He was raving about it. Not AS raving as this but it was absolutely glowing. Most of the comments are amazed it wasn't given a 10. But then, they always are aren't they...

@@NickHunter Probably - and honestly it was a really positive review, it just sounded like it was absolutely not for me because of me being very old, lol

Just curious, how old are you? I’m getting older than most gamers. I’m 35. I’m not old in the grand scheme of things, but in the videogame crowd I’m old.

@@christiangasior4244 41. Again not really ancient, but "this game is so snarky and cool" is absolutely a statement that says "the target audience is not you." Also I never want to see another plot that is basically "a guy exists, there is a girl, there is lots of combat, at the end they are together." I totally get why that driving force hits home with loads of people, I'm just not having it

It's an amazing game, I got it in Early Access once it came to Steam. I've just hit my 100th run and STILL I'm getting new dialogue... It's insane just how much thought and care were put into this game! There's quite a lot of replayability too, with the difficulty modifiers, character upgrades, different weapons AND different variants of weapons. It's well worth $20!

When I first saw this game I thought “awesome, it looks like Dead Cells crossed with Gauntlet,” but I wanted to wait, since while all the reviews were positive, I wanted the opinion of someone I was familiar with. With Jim’s seal of approval, I look forward to playing this once my budget allows.

This game has so much personality in it I never play it and end up in a bad mood, not even after a bad run. Also I adore the fact the developers forsaw people would complain about only beign able to pet one of Cerberus's heads, so they came up with a perfectly amenable reason for that (only that head likes being pet)

Well, everybody knew Hades was getting the 1.0 version so they just postponed to next year, no point in competing.

@@kimchy4692 I think they tried to postpone it to next year. They managed to delay it for 6 months, they just could not extend it any longer /s

I found this game when it eventually reached Steam. It was immediately my newest addiction and GOTY for me. Can't wait for cross-save to work on the Switch.

I lost all my "Early Access" Save Data sometime after they first added Elysium and decided I would just wait until the final build... and ho boy was it awesome. They added so much.
