I am 1/3 of the way through this and it is upsetting me already! I was a late adoption also not having been adopted till I was 17 years old and he was my dad. In many ways he was closer to me then his own natural born children. He said to me once when I was helping him out of the nursing home to take him back to his home, “You know, you’re better then one of mine own.” He said as I helped him into the wheelchair. “You adopted me so I am one of your own remember.” He told me before his natural born children that he had cancer. We had a bond and a trust I don’t think he had with his kids. They were always asking for things where as I never asked him for anything. I’m going to try and finish watching it…. We’ll see how that goes.

Your situation is different from what is presented here. Your father knows you and chose you. Decedent Hadley did not choose these women and did not know them. They were adopted after he died. If they had been adopted during his life, he could have specifically addressed them in his trust. He did address it as best he could by using the word “issue“. She won’t make a decision without checking to see what her younger sister thinks. It’s automatic. It just comes right out of her mouth. If you ask her about anything she says, “Did you check with Mary?“ “I’ll have to see what Mary thinks.“ If I wanted Aunt Mary to be in charge of whatever it is, I would ask Aunt Mary. I understand the pastor’s belief that the original idea was for his family to inherit. However, you must take into consideration the crazy RI judges. Then you cut your losses. Being right is great, all things being equal but RI is a crooked state and you can’t change the whole system. At least you don’t seem to mind you lost money. Legally, it did look like that adoption was a money grab bc they were adults.

Nevada uses California case law on community property, but misapplies two cases because the Nevada Supreme Court did not like the result. So in order to get the “correct” on Nevada bar exam, an applicant must write an analysis of the question using the correct case, then jettison that correct answer and apply the other case. These cases are called Pereira and Van Camp, and address apportioning the value of a business one spouse owned before the marriage.

The right way to handle this would be to fight for the intent of the person who wrote the will. The step children were not adopted until after the passing and as an effort to circumvent the intent. Those who wanted to settle in an effort to "get something" since their motivation was only money and didnt care about intent when the will/trust was written.

This was money they neither expected nor worked for. If only they had agreed to share it 50/50 as first suggested. They would not have lost in the financial depression, through the lawyers and it would have helped their dying cousin....congratulations Ron and Wilma you win nothing!!!!😡😡😡😡😡

Geeze I wouldnt want to attend Rons Church. He gives me the heebees. He reminds me of being a one time child bully as his other sister said he was. Wilma looked a weaker person, she attends her brothers church that part I caught in her conversation. Money brings out the best & worse in families. I know, been there, no loss bad experience though.

Looking over all that has happened, I would not have settled. The adult adopted daughters wanted the whole inheritance. The lawyers were looking for the easiest payday. When you rush to things is when you are looking for a quick buck, but not the worthy one. Ron needed proper legal representation, and Wilma just wanted to support her brother. Blood was thicker than a quick payout. Going solely off the will, it was as right now as the time it was written "issue." But this also means lineal descendants, for which there were none alive to receive the remain money. So in the end no one should have gotten the issue (remain money / capital) inheritance. This is a lesson in what to add in a will i.e. including / not including adopted as minors children.
