Gday, to cut a 1.75 pitch thread on a AL960b lathe you need a 35T gear which doesn't come with the lathe from new, Big thanks to John and Max for helping work this out, Big thanks to the viewer that sent in the new Mitutoyo dial indicator, Very much appreciated...

I can honestly say, Matty you are the type of bloke that people would love to share or rather buy a beer for and have a chat. A beautiful way of presenting in your own unique style. This honesty and dinkum way of sharing knowledge and educating is a very unique gift. To coin a phrase. There’s no bullshit

Winner winner, chicken dinner, nice work, and what a generous viewer gift. 👍I copped a strange comment on one of my videos a few weeks back about being an Aussie, working in metric, but sometimes quoting things in Imperial, but I suspect you are like me, a child of the era when we switched from Imperial to Metric, for me that was the year I started at TAFE for my apprenticeship.

Somehow cutting your own gears is the "I've arrived" moment in machining. I looked at my Sharp lathe and it does do 1.75 threads. Of course when I got it all of the change gears except what was installed were missing so I had to make a set of 8 gears from 30 to 69 tooth, and make two special high count plates for my dividing head as well. It was a very educational project and immensely satisfying to complete.

Gday, I was really excited when I cut my first gear, I find it quite enjoyable really especially when I don’t screw it up, that would of been a big education making the high count plates, thanks for watching mate, cheers

Nice info and shop tools from John, Max, & anonymous, lovely Dial Indicator. Brilliant job on cutting gears, not for the faint hearted 👌😉. Rotary wire brush does already job of deburring gears, and slots in screw threads, nice and easy, just beware of flying wires. Have a good un Matty, thanks for sharing 👍.

Hi Matt. Great information for us owners of the Al lathe. Haven't needed to cut 1.75 yet but will sore this in the running book for when required. Dropping things in the workshop is a right of passage for those evil shop devils. They always come out when we are not looking. Have a good week

G'day Matty! That mate is a win win, you've made a bloody good job of that! I can't understand why Hafco wouldn't supply a 35 tooth gear with the lathe. After all it's not as if M12 coarse is an oddball size of thread. A big oversight on their part to my mind. I think if I were you I would email the importers of the lathe and ask them the sixty four million dollar question as to why you can't cut an M12 x 1.75 thread on a metric lathe and why you had to get someone to work out what gear tooth you needed to cut a standard metric thread. I know I would be asking them that question lol Anyway you've done it now and made one not only for yourself, but one for Trev and Max as well. Good on ya sir! Cheers from the UK, Sam

Gday Sam, I can't work out why the lathe didn't come with this gear either, I should ask them next time i call Hare and Forbes, I should have cut a dozen of these gears and sold a few, Thanks for watching, Cheers

In a similar way my Harrison L6 lathe back gear chart only lists the use of a 28 tooth gear on the top shaft for 1.75mm pitch and double multiples like 3.5mm and 7 mm. All the other metric pitches are achieved with a 30 tooth gear on the top shaft then 127-120 on the intermediate shaft and 48 tooth on the bottom shaft. All other adjustments are achieved via the screwcutting gearbox ratios.

Nice job,Matty👌 I do enjoy cutting gears on the mill and those online gear calculators are a tremendous help,I have one downloaded on my apps on my phone. What you have to watch out for with push broaching on a hydraulic press is to back off the pressure every 2 or 3 teeth and release any side loading that accumulates between the ram and the nose of the broach or there is a real risk of shattering the broach. I think I did see you backing off a couple of times during the broaching process.

well done Matty, I had the same problem on my chester lathe, NO 1.75mm pitch !, I used Evan Lewis`s Ride The Gear Train algorithm to work things out for that and lots of other pitches, was very useful and if you input the right data it works out which gear setting for you. Good to see you doing stuff. keep it up.👍

Chooks in the air are OK with me, so long as they are accompanied by plenty of baked or roasted veggies. Hope you didn't drop the box a second time after the pick up. Bloody nice job on the gears.

Fantastic result. I have often wondered how to set the quick change gears when changing the gears on the back. My old Atlas lathe doesn’t have a quick change box so it’s all done on the slow change gears. I chewed out a gear a while back and I made a new one out of brass. (Existing gears are some kind of alloy named Zermac) I did the same procedure as you except I cut the key way with a home ground single point tool. Locked the lathe spindle and wound the carriage in and out like a horizontal slotting machine. Took a while but it worked great. Made a spare gear of course 🤠 My channel is currently at ~950 subs at the moment. Im in a bit of a creative low. I have one in the can and editing as we speak. Hard work back forward back forward 🤠 Hats of to you, your videos come out great and are easy to watch all the way to the end.

Gday Davo, I'll slipcover and check your channel out and subscribe, its not easy coming up with a video each week and its take commitment, Theres a lot of work involved making videos, editing takes a lot of time to do, 30min video can take me 8 to 10 hrs to edit, it can be done quicker but the video suffers, Appreciate you watching and commenting mate, Cheers

You can get them from the UK but would have to put them on a diet as they are 15mm wide and do the bore for those that don''t want to cut the teeth. and I think it is a very common problem my lathe came from Taiwan and much older and same gear missing.

@@MattysWorkshop I used to take my assistant for his Chemo, his wife took him the first time, but he was really bad with it. His wife asked me to take him, which I did. He had 6 chemo sessions, and he just came out feeling bad. I hope everything goes OK Matty. ❤️ Take care.

i also dropped a sorted box of nuts and bolts and took the better part of an hour to sort them back out... that was over 10 years ago since that day i swore never to use that kind of box again... Now i have a proper pull out cabinet that i cant drop lol

Gday Paul, It took me about 2hrs to sort the nuts and bolts out again, 3mm 4mm 5mm 6mm 8mm 10mm, sorting the Ashers out was the worst, Id love to have a proper pull out cabinet one day, its on my wish list but it'll be a while, Thanks for watching, Cheers

Nice job Matty, I'm surprised your machine doesn't do 1.75. I have a very similar lathe to you, mine is a Capital C06230A/914. For all metric threads it lists both top and bottom small gears run engaged with the 120T main/banjo gear. It only uses the 127T-120T combo for cutting imperial thread pitches. My settings for 1.75 are: Top gear - 56 tooth. Bottom gear - 60 tooth. Gearbox/Leadscrew Levers - 4-R-A-C. Too late now, but I wonder if the same set up would've been correct on your machine too🤔😁👍

Gday, The difference id say is my lathe has an imperial lead screw which I need to use the 127/120 gears to cut metric threads, Thanks for watching, Cheers
