Tuomas often refers to himself as "Dead Boy" or "Ocean Soul". This song is about him pondering what his legacy would be if he were to die suddenly. You'll notice that all of the band are very sober, even Emppu, who is usually smiling and interacting with the audience. I think Floor is at her best in this song. She makes me tear up every time I hear it. And, Marko's double neck is a bass and guitar with some kind of acoustic adjustment that those who understand this sort of thing will be able to explain better. It is affectionately known as "The Beast." It's used in situations like this, where Marko starts out playing the acoustic guitar to accompany Floor then, later on in the song, switches to the bass. Saves having to run for different instruments in the middle of a song.

Whenever you see "boy" or "poet' , Tuomas is usually talking about himself. This song is about him, and how he wants to be remembered. I think he wants it played at his funeral. Tuomas has said this is the Mother of all Nightwish songs. An older song, from the 3rd album, Wishmaster, in 2000 recorded with Tarja, before Troy , or even Marko, joined the band. This Decades tour played a lot of older Tarja era songs. Marko's double neck, called "The Beast'", is a custom Warwick bass with Framus guitar (Both brand names are owned by the same company), very heavy and very expensive.

An important theme in Tuomas Holopainen's work is the lost innocence of childhood. I have always interpreted this song as him mourning the lost child in himself...

Nightwish Army south Brittany France reporting. The song is the death of Toumas's childhood and how he wants to remembered after he passes. My favourite Nightwish song. Floor's voice, Emppu's expression at the end of his solo. Amazing. If you read this line Remember not the hand that wrote it Remember only the verse Songmaker's cry, the one without tears For I've given this its strength And it has become my only strength Comforting home, mother's lap, chance for immortality Where being wanted became a thrill I never knew The sweet piano writing down my life Teach me passion, for I fear it's gone Show me love, hold the lorn So much more I wanted to give to the ones who love me I'm sorry Time will tell, this bitter farewell I live no more to shame, nor me, nor you And you I wish I didn't feel for you anymore

The benefit of Marko’s double-neck guitar/bass is so he can switch from one to the other without having to completely swap instruments. Note in this video he is playing the lower neck (guitar) from the beginning through the first chorus. After the first chorus he immediately switches to the upper neck (bass) for the remainder of the song.

This is a sad song, but also very beautiful one. Very personal to Tuomas. Notice, how stonefaced the always so cheerful Emppu was when doing his solo. The "monster" in Markos's hands is a custom made Warwick/Framus Infinity/Pantera double neck guitar/bass.. Haha, it's a very heavy instrument. 😎👍

It is one of the most (if not the most) personal songs to Tuomas. He wrote it when he was 22(-ish), just after the band had really taken off to insane popularity. It is somewhat of a eulogy to the boy-Tuomas, that no longer exists. Just a few years before he was a normal Finnish teenager with a passion for music and now his childhood is abruptly cut short, the pressure to write new songs even better than the last is huge. Also he worries how is ever to find a true love now he has been assigned this god-like status by the rest of the world. And yet, he feels it would be wrong to complain about any of this, because he got exactly what he wanted. He is living his dream.

One of my favorite performances too! It is so epic, and those last belts by Floor were insane. The benefit of using a double-neck is that the song requires you to play both instruments, and it would be cumbersome trying to switch back and forth between two completely different guitars. Now in the Islander, he only plays the guitar part, but he probably likes the tone of it, and wouldn't want to carry an extra guitar for one song.

Double-Necks can have different Strings, Tune or PickUps fe. So the benefit is to not have to change Guitar within a Song or in between Songs and still be able to play two different Guitars. In the case of Marcos Beast i guess its clear though :D

I started in 94. My real name is Shae, so I really like those letters because I wrote them so much, I wouldn’t say I have least favorite letters, as it’s more about combinations, I hate 2 letters the same next to each other, and letters that don’t leave space for the next one, my wife’s name Lori is very hard for me, because an LO is tough to not have a lot of unwanted space
