haikyuu is one of the more realistic sports anime. No super powers, talking animals or magic. Everything you see in the show is based on real volleyball.

This series is focused on teamwork, character personalities and development, and of course the ins and outs of Volleyball. There isnt much romance like you said, and no supernatural elements or powers. Its very down to earth and regular. You were right about the birds being the school mascots though, many mascots in this show are animals like birds or cats. This series is awesome though and my fave sports anime :)

Haikyu is so underated by a lot of people because it's a show about volleyball. Honestly, I said the same thing, "How can you make volleyball interesting?". You got to give it a chance, absolutely amazing show!!

Haikyuu is really a great anime. There is no super powers. every play or trick you see in the anime can be done in real life. There is no romance or cringy drama. And most importantly there is alot of character development for everyone even for the opponent team. You can count every one on the team as main characters just because the amount of development they get. I would definitely recommend the anime you won't regret it.

The official English title of the anime is "Haikyu!!" but the Japanese title is "Haikyū!!" (Romaji) - usually pronounces as "Haikyuu!!" (because there are several different ways to render elongated sounds in Romaji) , which is why people write the title that way (like a guide for pronunciation). The last u in "Haikyuu!!" is the ー in "ハイキュー" (Japanese title of the anime). Btw, "Haikyū" means "Volleyball".

Haikyuu is the first and only sport anime I have ever seen, it’s a really great anime. Great character development, the central theme is growth, healthy competition and work team. Plus the animation is awesome! I used to play voleyball in high school and this show helped me connect again with the sport. I’m a med student but on my free time I’m training again! It would be great if you react to Haikyuu! 🙏🏼🙏🏼

The birds are representations of the teams.. the MC's team name is called Karasuno and in japanese it translates to crows.. Also it impacts to their team motto which is "FLY"

I know you guys are pretty busy with a lot of other shows rn but you should definitely come back to this one. Coming from someone who has only ever watched anime’s that have power ups and other magical stuff in them, this show still manages to get me unbelievably hype and I definitely never thought a show about volleyball could do that.

Sports anime sometimes tend to not follow generic plots such as love, magic and stuff like that. They have incredible athletic abilities and overall seems relatable and normal.

A sports anime would be fun where the main character has an unrelated superpower to the sport he plays or the main story. Lke if Hinata talked to crows inbetween matches but nothing ever came of it.
