Before busting out some of their hits Thursday night, HAIM’s Este, Danielle, and Alana Haim sat down with TheWrap’s CEO and editor in chief Sharon Waxman to talk about “rocking the boat” by firing their agent over gender-pay disparity.
Youngest sister Alana made it clear she has no regrets.

It really doesn't matter if HAIM were the headline band or not. The fact is their agent lied to them about their receiving equal pay, and basically told them to be quiet about it. HAIM had the right to stand up for themselves and also the right to receive equal pay. I am so pround of Alana, Danielle, and Este for standing up for themselves and, by extension, other women and girls.

I remember Prince had Susan Rogers as his engineer and she was one of the very few women in the music industry back in the day..WHY are we still having this conversation at all? Prince ALWAYS promoted female musicians throughout his career as he knew it was a sexist industry ..some of the comments on this thread are lame.🙄

I’ve watched a few videos of Haim being interviewed, just a few so I might be wrong, but the impression I get is that Danielle would prefer not to talk. It seems to me that by taking the mic or answering for her, her sisters are doing her a favour. I’m surprised how many comments I read along the lines of ‘poor Danielle’. Isn’t there a small chance that her sisters, who clearly have a deep love for each other, might know better than you what Danielle is feeling?

I think these three are so successful because they play to their (many) individual strengths, while obviously giving each other space to grow. Danielle communicates volumes outside of interviews. And she's the old soul and more openly introverted, which I ❤.

@@LividPatriarch If this is true, it definitely takes some of the piss out of the story. While no one should be lied to by their manager/agent/whoever when it comes to money, Kendrick Lamar wasn't just on a different level than Haim in 2018, he was in a completely different building all together. There's nothing sexist or unfair about paying a global superstar 10x what you'd pay a really successful indie band, regardless of who they are.

@@JEFFKINGS yeah look, honestly I'm gonna have to go ahead and retract that comment; came as word-of-mouth from a rather outspoken friend on the subject and I can't actually find any verification that they were even playing in the same festival in the same year as the person that told me this implied.

The band was the HEADLINER of the event. She says so in the video. And that band was Muse. You know, the global arena selling band. It wasn't another small indie pop band like themselves. I love Haim but they're in another league of they think they're a big a draw as MUSE.

hmm i get the fishy feeling about these things well just becasue that "particualr band" was paid 10times more thant them does not immediately equate to that that was becasue they were male band.. i see this kind of very vague reasoning and no use of critical analyze to back up their point in feminism community i was fan of haim since 2012 when they were not that big they were so Xuckin RAW and rock n' roll but these actions they are taking recently whcih portraits themselves as victim is quite concerning maybe it's just another LA california madness.. it seems like they are becoming another hollywood people i hope they don't turn out to political figure and preach the people with moral virtue someday

Was the pay about gender inequality...or paying the headliner way more!? Headliners usually do get a lot more. In 2018 Haim was coming into their own, and standing up for yourself is key. I am not sure this is so cut and dried though. There is a lot of grey here...

I understand that men sometimes get paid more, but in the music industry?? Just seems strange. I don't see the reasoning. At least with like manual labor with heavy lifting and stuff or sports you could have an argument (not a great one), but when it comes to music there is literally nothing you could say that warrant women being paid less. They do the EXACT same thing as men, and many bands are guys/girls so what is the pay then?
@jamesbaker9106

The disparity comes from the fact that they were opening and the other band was headlining, which is standard practice. They aren't doing the same job.

It’s out of order that they were lied to. But to assume the reason they were getting less is because they’re women is presumptuous. It’s one of many possible reasons.

as women we can definitely pick up when the reason for us not to be allowed to do something or to receive less credit for something is because of our gender. especially in such a controversial environment like the music industry. i know there could’ve been other reasons, but part of the issue is that our problem keeps being overlooked when it shouldn’t be considered normal

If the other band was Muse, that would be like Anya Taylor-Joy asking for the same salary as Scarlett Johansson. Be reasonable and logical. And no, don't hire women every chance you get. @@verkanntoderverwunschen Did you miss the part where Alana said this other male band was the HEADLINER...? Not saying gender pay doesn't exist, but do you think headliners and supporting acts get paid the same? That's like the stupid "pay disparity" over the Mark Walhberg and Michelle Williams movie. There's one that's a known draw for audiences and the other is not. Or how WNBA players want equal pay to the NBA. One brings in millions of fans, and the other no one even watches--including women. For all anyone knows, and they're certainly not gonna tell anyone, is that maybe other bands got less than Haim at the same event. All the story says is they got paid less than, again, THE HEADLINER. Do you think Haim is gonna fight for equal pay on a tour they headline if they have a male supporting act?

While I love Haim's music, there was no sexism involved here. It seems like the other artist/band was bigger than they were, so naturally they would be getting paid more. That's like being a part of a line up and complaining why Paul McCartney is getting paid more than you are. Put the card back in the deck.
