I'm glad you found me too! I have many videos with my Dorper sheep. They are good sheep. I will say the biggest mistake I made with Dorpers was buying some and moving them across the country. It would have been better to buy local (better resistance to all the local parasites). Drop a comment any time and I'm happy to help!

I always learn a lot from your videos. Can you do a video about tick control?
@homesteadingwithPJ
@homesteadingwithPJ 3 жыл бұрын
I haven't had any experience with ticks yet, aside from what I've read. I see a lot of folks who deal with them in the Facebook groups I'm in deal with them. Seems like they thrive in wetter climates. I'm sure I'll deal with it eventually. Maybe I'll do a video one day of basics for all sheep related insect problems.

Okay, I'm sold! Now I need to try some hair sheep meat. If it doesn't taste greasy or gamey, what does it taste most similar to? Or is it just its own amazing wonderful thing?

Hey cool to see you around Jimmy! I'd love to get you a sample, I think we're basically neighbors now. I think it tastes close to elk, but better marbled. Like 70% beef and 30% pork. Buy yes, it is its own wonderful thing.

Is that the most wool that they self shear or do they completely get rid of most wool ? Nice Video 💯💯
@homesteadingwithPJ
@homesteadingwithPJ 3 жыл бұрын
They will self shear everything they can rub off on trees or fences. So they will pretty much always maintain a bit up top. Which is why I recommend shearing if you have the equipment and very hot weather.

Hi PJ! We appreciate your info and the passion you share about hair sheep. Question... Can you take a portion of the ewe’s milk for human consumption while they’re nursing their lambs?
@homesteadingwithPJ
@homesteadingwithPJ Жыл бұрын
Oh dear! I really don't know. We haven't milked any of our sheep. I would think that true milking sheep would produce enough milk that maybe you could take some (because that's what people with cow and goats milk) but I really don't know. We've had friends who milk their goats and they have to separate the kids, milk the goat, reserve some for the kids and bottle feed the kids, and then they are able to sell the rest. I would think you'd have to go for a milking breed and we've only ever raised meat breeds of sheep.

I have 2 female hair sheep and they are fighting over food I give them 4 cups a day of food and unlimited grass do you have any tips on how to get them not to fight i give them hay too but only in the winter... they are pets btw
@homesteadingwithPJ
@homesteadingwithPJ 3 жыл бұрын
My guess is that they right because you feed them grain (assuming it's grain). Do you have enough grass on the ground to let them forage? If so, let the forage and feed them something nice occasionally. If not I would save anything but hay for special needs and occasional feed.

I would spreed the cups of food over multiple container because they fight over it they will always move back in forth so they will manage to get always get a free container.

I raise wool sheep, I find that they are far superior than hair sheep. If you live in the southwest then get hair sheep, but if you live anywhere else and don't want to shear Sheep then get goats. I know a lot of people are afraid of shearing sheep and it's the first thing that comes up about them. Wool sheep get bigger on average and produce a better weight to meat ratio. Don't be scared of the wool it's not a dieing industry.

I love your perspective, as I raise hair sheep. What breed do you raise and what hanging weight do you get off the lambs? Would love to know more about wool sheep. Also we still shear most years in late spring.

@@homesteadingwithPJ I raise Corridales and Finnsheep here in Minnesota. Like you I only have a few acres and these are very nice medium size sheep. I will process between 80-100 lbs, which takes 6 to 9 months; this all differs from rams, ewes, pure breed, and cross breeds. Hair sheep are good and I like Dorpers, but they have their place for what they were breed for. The lineage of Dorpers has its roots set in South Africa and the Persian desert, so very arid climates.

So these sheep produce two fewer products than wool sheep, neither wool nor lanolin? Not impressed.
