Ko Tang is an old Chinese barbershop in old Jakarta with a long history. It has been written up in books, magazines, and practically every Indonesian newspaper.
My barber was named Achiu. He is 78 years old and has been cutting hair for over 50 years.
Ko Tang, located in Glodok, Jakarta's Chinatown is so famous that even the Indonesian politicians come here to get their haircuts during the elections. They believe that if they come get a haircut here, it is good luck, and then they will win the election. On the walls are pictures with various politicians. They welcome them all.
I showed up unannounced to get a haircut. I ordered the works for 100,000 Rupiah -- only $7 USD. This included a haircut, hair wash, head and shoulder massage, facial shave, and the famous ear cleaning.
Ear cleaning is a three step routine, which ends with a brush being twisted throughout your ear canal. Twisting, turning, in and out, this was a very very strange feeling for me, but I loved it. He performed a total ear wax elimination. I could describe it as the ultimate q-tip experience.
