Fun Fact: One of the most amazing and iconic Drag Queens in history named Divine was the originator for Tracy’s mother. Out of respect for her, the musical and most adaptations since then have always cast the role in drag. One of the best ways art has paid respect for drag and it’s influence on culture.

@@baydiac yes, John Waters (also an openly gay man) and Divine were close friends and often worked together. Honestly, they were kind of attached to one another (not in a bad way, in a collaborative one). John Waters actually gave Divine the name “Divine.” Both also from Baltimore and in their early 20’s at the time. They’re both so imperative to queer and camp cinema/culture as a whole.

Yup. As a black person the ending scene where the show is integrated makes me emotional. The songs give me chills. I think it makes me emotional because even though it's a fictional movie, it portrays racist systems that existed in real life in the past. Racist systems like segregation. The ending scene in this movie just makes me grateful for those in real life who fought for my freedom and my rite to be present in the same spaces as white people. It makes me grateful for the people who came before me and fought for equality in real life. It's the symbolism and the message for me that makes the movie great. Don't get me wrong we have more work to do as a society when it comes to fighting for equality. Like when it comes to issues of police brutality, but we have come a long way. This movie reminds me that I am lucky there were people before me who fought to make things better for me and all black people in America.

Hairspray always leaves me with a huge smile on my face-such a great story, cast and awesome songs! I love that it was chosen as the first musical reaction for your channel. Pitch Perfect is a blast, but it's not a traditional musical because the music does not drive the story forward. My favorite songs are "You Can't Stop the Beat," "Ladies Choice, " "I Know Where I've Been," and "Mama I'm a Big Girl Now," which is from the Broadway play but was only featured in this film's end credits. I think you would all enjoy Les Misérables (2012) which is also a classic and has an all-star cast (Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Russell Crowe, Amanda Seyfried, Eddie Redmayne). Hamilton and La La Land (with Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling) and would also be great musical choices for you guys.

Hairspray is one of those rare times where I also like both movie versions. I wouldn't say I'm a die hard musical fan but I did enjoy quite a few, Grease, Hello Dolly, The Sound of Music, Into the Woods (though I heard a lot of people don't like it), Sweeney Todd, Highschool Musical 😂, Hamilton, Wicked, and maybe a few others I can't remember.. Probably just the more mainstream ones I've always loved welcome to the 60s, and the ending credits song I forget the name. And to this day I sing Inez's part from run and tell that 😂

You must be so proud of your grandmother and your heritage! ❤ That song makes even me, a very much pale Midwestern white girl tear up. It's just so powerful. I wish I had such a strong cultural heritage sometimes, but even without it it hits on a personal level in the sense that you have to know who you are and where you come from to know where you are going in life. Everything, every moment, every struggle from our ancestors to now has led us to this very moment and I am so grateful that I live in a world where we recognize how far we have come, but how far we still have to go. Wishing you joy, peace, and love! (P.S. I hope to see your beautiful country/state someday in person).

As a Born and Raised Baltimorean, I thank you for reacting to this gem. Some Fun Facts: - John Waters (pride and joy of Baltimore), who wrote 'Hairspray' and many others like 'CryBaby', based most of his works on what he had witnessed and experienced growing up in the 50s & 60s Baltimore. Including segregation, Integration, Civil Rights, "Checkered Board" Interracial Couples, LGBTQ, Drapes (greasers) vs Squares, influence of Elvis, etc etc etc. He's very chill and pretty kewl to meet in person. He still is around some cafes and clubs downtown. - The Corny Collins Show was actually a reminiscent of a real show called The Buddy Deane Show of which John Waters grew up watching. - Cameos/Characters from the OG 'Hairspray' (1988) were in 'Hairspray' (2007). Like Ricki Lake who played the OG Tracy in 1988, plays a Judge in 2007. Jerry Stiller who played OG Wilbur in 1988, plays Mr. Pinky in 2007. John Waters also makes cameos in both versions as well like the psychiatrist in 1988 and "the flasher who lives next door" in 2007. - In the OG 'Hairspray', John Waters wanted The Famous Drag Queen Divine to play Edna. John had worked with Divine many times before. It started a trend for Men and/or Drag Queens to play Edna. - John Travolta worked very hard to try and achieve the Baltimorean Accent and did very well. The Baltimore "Hon" short for Honey, who have these accents, defined as "a person -- that beehived,cat's-eye-glasses-wearing, working-class woman of the late 1950s and early '60s." And yes they do look exactly like that. - The Nicest kids in town was reminiscent of The Mickey Mouse Club. - The New Girl in Town was reminiscent of when whites would take black music/songs and showcase it as their own. The whole copyright at the time was difficult during segregation. "Race Music" or "Colored Music" or certain dances was against the laws if integrated or so. Some like Elvis really pushed the bondaries during that time which was one of the reasons why he was so popular. - "the bum on his bar room stool they wish me luck on my way to school" "the rats on the street all dance around my feet" Yes this is absolutely all true facts about Baltimore. Especially during Game Seasons or Festivals or The Preakness or so. People are at the bars as soon as they open. And the rats here look like raccoons. There's alot more that can be pointed out and discussed but i'll just end it right there for now. 😅😅😅😅

The part that John Travolta plays in this is meant to be played by a man. It was originally written for Divine an extremely well known drag queen.

Just for timeline's sake...Zac did this movie in between High School Musical and High School Musical 2. In fact, I believe the success of this movie is what convinced Disney that Zac could, indeed, sing his own stuff and that is why he sings in HSM 2 and 3.

I LOVE "Hairspray" I saw it 4 times when it was in the theaters. What really got me was HOW ACCURATE the clothing was for 1962, when it takes place. I say that because I was 14/15 years old in 1962, and the styles the girls were wearing, including white tennis shoes (as we called them then) that Traci was wearing was a "big thing" then. The dresses the girls were wearing are exactly like we wore in 1962. I am always scrutinizing costumes in "period" films and to me, "Hairspray" was en pointe, without EXAGGERATING the styles of that period. It really brought back a LOT of fond memories for me when I was 15. I LOVE it. I have it on DVD now, and I watch it often. A little trivia for you, RIKKI LAKE was the original "Tracy" in the first "Hairspray" movie which is a bit different than this one. It had some songs that were not the same that you heard here, it really wasn't classified as a musical. (I like THIS one better than the Rikki Lake version) Rikki has a "cameo" in this one. She is one of the judges that walk in to sit in the bleachers at the Miss Hairspray competition. I just love how you guys actually enjoyed a movie that is considered a "chick flick." I have 3 adult sons and they absolutely hate movies like Hairspray, or Mama Mia, really they don't like any musicals! Most guys don't, so it's refreshing to see that YOU liked it.! Great reaction, guys! YOU should react to an older musical that is ALSO fun and amusing, "BYE BYE BIRDIE" with Dick Van Dyke, and Ann-Margaret which was released in April of 1963 and was partially filmed in 1962.

I’m a bit late but congrats on now 101k subscribers! Been quietly watching for months now so it’s cool to see you guys hit such a big achievement. Also man I got so excited when you revealed you’d be watching, it’s one of my favorites and I’m forever jealous of people who got to see it in theaters when it first released (I was too young lol). Something I love about it that I don’t see many people talking about is a change from the original musical the movie made with the ending at the Miss Hairspray pageant. In the musical Tracy wins which is fine but let’s the overall message get a bit muddled and makes the story much more “white savior-y”, while the movie making Inez win solely based on her talent is such a good twist and feel good moment that I was surprised that wasn’t how it was originally

I had watched the Hairspray musical earlier this year and I was surprised as well that the ending wasn’t the same as the movie. I definitely prefer the pageant results from the movie and that Corny Collins announces the integration himself as opposed to Tracy in the musical

"Hairspray" was a film before it was a Broadway play and it played original 1960's songs, but it was not a musical. John Walters, a native of Baltimore, wrote and directed it in 1988 starring Ricki Lake and her mother was played by a man named Devine, who also played the station manager, and her father was played by Jerry Stiller. John Walters has a cameo as the 'flasher' in this film and Jerry Stiller plays Mr. Pinky, owner of the Hefty Hideaway dress shop. And James Marsden has played a lot of characters, including Scott Summers/Cyclopes in the "X-Men" movies.

This movie was a really the first time Nikki Blonzky, Tracey Turnblad, had ever done any acting. This was her debut. They intentionally looked for an unknown to play Tracey. There was a whole audition contest thing. She worked at a Cold Stone when she got the part.

This is such a phenomenal movie! I worked in a movie theater when this came out and saw this movie at least 26 times during breaks and after work. The amount of times my best friend and I still quote this movie is pretty ridiculous! I do love the original (non musical) movie with Ricki Lake which I saw as a kid. John Watters who directed was the flasher and Jerry Seinfeld played Wilbur in the original and Mr. Pinky in this movie. I'm glad y'all enjoyed this classic!

Jerry Stiller, Mr. Pinky, played Tracy's dad in the og Hairspray movie. RE: Queen Latifah singing. She killed her song in 2002's Chicago, put out two jazz albums, The Dana Owens Album in 2004 and Trav'lin' Light in 2007, and played Blues singer, Bessie Smith, in the 2015 movie, Bessie, where she sang 7 out of the 17 songs on the soundtrack.
