Not knowing if you will return was the common theme of people who went for Hajj in those times. It was only in 1850 that the first steam ship carried pilgrims for Haj. In 1936 Egypt was the first one to start Air Flights for Haj. Before this the travel was by land and pilgrims were generally attacked by Badaoins and their possessions were stolen. Things have changed so much and all for the better. This video captures how far we have come from the ancient times. The number of pilgrims are now in millions and not in thousands. Enjoy and please do watch till the end. Please share and subscribe.
This is the First Documentary ever filmed. This was done by a Dutch Film Maker by the name of Krogers. He lived in Indonesia and decided to do one of his first films on Hajj. An event that he knew was of huge significance to the Muslims. It is not exactly sure who funded the project, but his wife was very supportive. Krogers prepared himself for the trip by getting circumcised and learning about the Arab traditions and learning about the Haj from an Ambassador who had performed Hajj 5 times. He also changed his name. It looks like he was able to get into Mecca in 1928.
Please share with as many people as you know may be they will see their ancestors in this documentary. Krogers died in 1964.

In the past, Indonesian Muslims who were about to go to perform hajj held a big gathering to bid a goodbye with their loved ones, relatives, and neighbors. It's because the trip was utterly arduous, it takes months to go and back, to the point that they didn't even know they're going to be back to the homeland or not 😢 it was indeed a difficult time. Because of the huge amount of effort and sacrifices, people who did hajj was well-respected by the community, that afterwards their status will be increased and they will be regarded as an imam/a teacher. May Allah allow all of us to perform hajj in the best manner and be a true Muslim who earns paradise. Aameen

slightly disagree. back then boats were metal at that point so you just slept in a room for a month or so and landed in jeddah. that's not super difficult compared to african brothers who had to travel across africa through egypt or through a port in east africa. i boat trip wouldn't cost a fortune either since one large boat could fit thousands of people

For those that were confused about the burial at sea, the journey by ship was over three weeks and the death was on the ship. In Islam, we bury our dead quickly, and if a person dies at sea and it is not possible to bring the body back to land before decay, or if burial at land becomes impossible, burial at sea is allowed.

Those were the days! - When it was a big chance that they may not come back. - When the journey itself was much longer than the Hajj pilgrimage. - When the term 'Hajji' meant so much more. Now we can just get a plane ticket. And the ride is now shorter than the Hajj itself. Not that it means any less at all now, but we should look at those in the past with awe.

Muslims in the past, especially in africa where maliki jurisprudence is widely followed, they had to start the voyage to Hajj if they can walk and move. That's it ! So poor ones just starts the trip even if they don't have any money. But they stop on the way to work a bit and earn some to spend it the days they were traveling. A lot will take them years to accomplish the Hajj. There are stories of families moving with kids to hajj and throughout the voyage kids became adults. May allah accept from them ameen.

I remember the Sultan of Aceh wrote to Usmani Turk, asking for help because the Dutch won't let our people going Hajj (the letter was said to be delivered to the hands of Sultan Abdul Hamid II right after he outright rejected Theodor Herzl appeal for land. He is the founder of Zionism).. The Turks responded and sent aid and put pressure on the Dutch on their trade. Thank goodness it worked and people were allowed to go again.

They say that the Hajj is your personal 'fight' due to how difficult it can be. Makes you wonder what it was like before the 1920's! Everyone you see in this video has returned back to Allāh and are most likely forgotten. Our life is so short, we have to turn to our Lord and follow the Sunnah of our messenger (peace be upon him) even if the people go against us.

In my country, in the time of my great grandparents, afaik, every time someone go to pilgrimage to mecca for hajj. There will be a kind of thanksgiving party but in restrospect that the one going to mecca is considered "going home to his creator" since it would take minimum 6 month of journey to mecca, by sea
