Hajj LIVE: Muslims Gather at Mount Arafat For Intense Worship & Reflection in Hajj Pilgrimage | CNBC TV18
Following the footsteps of prophets beneath a burning sun, Muslims from around the world congregated Saturday at a sacred hill in Saudi Arabia for intense, daylong worship and reflection. The ritual at Mount Arafat, known as the hill of mercy, is considered the peak of the Hajj pilgrimage. It is often the most memorable for pilgrims, who stand shoulder to shoulder, feet to feet, asking God for mercy, blessings, prosperity and good health. The mount is about 20 kilometers (12 miles) southeast of Mecca.
Thousands of pilgrims who arrived in Mecca ahead of the start of Haj attend Friday prayer at Mecca's Grand Mosque.
Hajj, one of the largest annual Muslim gatherings, occurs in Mecca from the eighth to the 10th of Dhul-Hijjah, the final month of the Islamic calendar.
This year, based on the moon sighting, Hajj will start on June 14, with Eid al-Adha being celebrated on June 16.
Hajj is a once-in-a-lifetime obligation for all able-bodied Muslims who can afford it, intended to cleanse them of sin and take them closer to God.
Hajj begins 10 to 12 days earlier each year. The infographic below shows when Hajj is expected to take place over the next 31 years.
