This programme chronicles the celebrations surrounding the 85th birthday of King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV of the Kingdom of Tonga. The traditional forms of song and dance (lakalaka & ma'ulu'ulu) were on display from all corners of the kingdom in elaborate performances never seen before by western scholars and media. Enjoy the ceremony and the pomp of a remarkable Polynesian kingdom as they celebrate what was to be the last grand celebration for the monarch. I produced this film in conjunction with Dr. Eric B. Shumway and Dr. Vernice Wineera from the Pacific Institute at BYU-Hawaii.

As a Samoan, I'm so proud of our Polynesian heritage, our Tongan connection and rich traditions. Malo lava, beautiful Tonga.

This sounds like Zulu singing. We also call ourselves Tonga or Ludvonga or Dzonga or Tsonga. We are also singers and dancers. Our Zulu King lives in a place called Nongoma which means place of the singers or songs. Goma = Song, singing or drum.

I rememeber that Lakalaka from Vava'u i was a little girl that time my mum n grandma went to the practice every afternoon. I see some faces that they are already gone by now including the taofi vahenga my Late Uncle Potauaine Tu'iniua. Just a great memory i was a little girl but i remembered alot from that time. 'Oku ou polepole 'aki 'eku Tonga. GOD N TONGA ARE MY INHERITANCE.

I thoroughly enjoyed this wealth of entertainment learned Togan's music and such rich culture. I am Samoan and my mom together with The Samoan Women's Committee visited Tonga (maybe late 60's) and had the pleasure to meeting Her Honor Queen Salote. I have always interested in Tonga and that one day would love to go visit. Thanks again for posting/sharing with us all! It's a prayer really! The singing and dancing in such a way that everyone is praying whether you are rich or poor great or small!

Learning our culture enables us to understand our identity of who we are and where we are from. Without the past, there is no present and because of the present then we look forward for a better future. Thanks for all the good hard work from the beginning of composing, singing practice and performing etc. And end up in the screen for everyone.

I love watching the men performance It's so beautiful, may be because they are active and lively in how they perform the actual lakalaka, it look so easy but in fact it's not, but they are so skillful in their performance,

Talofa uso Mike… faafetai tele sole for your kind words on my film… re Tu‘i Kanokupolu, all of the performance footage related to that royal line is held in the archives at BYU - the only released footage is what I have elected for this documentary. My other films Kava Kuo Heka and Tuku Fonua have historical information related to Tu‘i however. I am always intrigued by the royal lines of Tonga and their inter-relationship with the royal lines in Samoa and Fiji. Alofas uso, Gary.
